Yea because caring about the image of the community you claim to be a part of doesn’t matter, when people highlight and point out the problem you’ll be there to tell them, “HEY, IT WAS OPTIONAL!!!”
You need to post more.
As probably one of the older members here (35, guessing most are younger) my opinion is that when I started playing SF back in the day and even SF 2 during my high school years it was purely for fun and a hobby… occasionally my friends and I would bet for money, who would buy lunch, pay for the beer/smoke if they lost etc, but back then we all realized there wasn’t a career for this. Again it was for fun and and it was a hobby and pumping quarters into a machine added up and when systems that came out that supported these games those costs added up too. Before I knew it life crept up, college, cars, rent, jobs, girlfriends, families and I didn’t have the extended time that some of today’s pro’s have (and also earned) to master these games. I am not mad or bitter at all. I have enjoyed my life and had many experiences I wouldn’t trade them for anything. I am appreciative for all the advances in gaming and the development of the FGC. Sites like this weren’t even a thought when I first started playing, streaming wasn’t a concept, hell…web sites weren’t even a thought…
I was even fortunate to be a game tester at Activision in the early 2000’s for a few months but it just didn’t pay the bills. I actually gave up gaming for almost 9 years. I bought my first PS3 in June of 2010 and my first Xbox in April of 2011 when the PSN fiasco went down. Fact of the matter is that I had other expenses and gaming didn’t fit in because it was a hobby and for fun… I wasn’t broke I had jobs over the years, went to school, life… etc…When I got comfortable and stable/a routine in my now older years I got back into gaming because I could a this time.
So when I watch the streams (I am very thankful for them) I find it embarrassing to see raffles. It comes off a little used car salesman-like and seems shady especially when the drawings are on the late night random time of 3am, when they get delayed for more entries, and sometimes are held offline. Some are done live and I appreciate seeing that even tough I am not a participant. Another user posted here that in events of charity these raffles couldn’t be a better tool to raise money for the needy and less fortunate but when the raffles are for personal gain for the capable, the maybe out of touch older gamer inside of me says buck the f*^k up and get real. As a child I wished I could of played games for a living and even though major tournaments were not even thought of then the fact of the matter is gaming is a choice just as much as entering a raffle for a stick is. If you aren’t capable of the earning potential you need to sustain your lifestyle then get another back up source of income that can be respected by the majority … I doubt anyone is going to say “awww man, so in so got bodied and is a scrub now because he had to get a job”…getting a job and getting bodied because you cant practice as much is a hell of a lot more respectable than basically begging for money so you can post instagrammed pictures of your food and places you go…
Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to share a point of view from what I assume is one of the older members…Also, sorry if I am out of touch and come off as a hater or whatever because I am not. I am very grateful for the streams, players, the videos, forums, the tweets and everything else in between. With all the collective minds in the FGC I am sure a better way can be found to sustain the community and continue the growth.
Dominin Method Gaming is incorporated. While raffles may be considered “illegal” this here isn’t. This is a donation drive to raise money for DMG. The simple answer to those who hates raffles is this, don’t enter. If you don’t like the raffle, don’t enter it. Top players who raffle off arcade sticks shouldn’t affect you that much. It appears from this forum/thread the TC is trying to raise awareness in the wrong manner. Others want to join in about the “legality” and the “moral” wrong doing.
It’s a donation drive to help raise money for cause and as a sign of gratitude one person will be given a gift for donating. It’s not that serious people. If you do not like raffles do not enter. As for the person who feels this “hurts the FGC” I ask you, “how does it hurt the FGC?” if anything this donation drive may attract new members to the FGC. The winner will have won so many items and may fall in love with the FGC even more. Focus your time and energy on something more productive other the attacking “top players” and “teams” for trying to raise money. It’s just childish and immature to be honest. This in no way causes any harm to anyone or let alone the FGC. What harms the FGC are the trolls who sit behind a computer and pop off on forums writing all kinds of hateful post as they don’t fear any form of penalty other then having there account banned. As we all know it doesn’t take much to set up a new email address and register under a new name, so there is no true penalty for being reckless with your words.
Then there’s raffles that are you know, rigged.
You wanna know what attract new players to the FGC? Competition, helpful reference material regarding a FG they’re looking forward to play; and most importantly players who are willing and able to guide newcomers to the ways to get better.
I don’t think donating money to someone else while maybe getting a prize or not helps someone how to play a game.
Yes and this thread and all the drama it caused, is helping the FGC is attracting new members right ?, at least what jason is doing can benefit someone, all this thread is doing is causing drama. While we are on the subject of helping the FGC what have you done to help the FGC ?
I’m gonna be honest here, I’m seeing very little trolling in this thread. There is a combination of astonishment that people are actually buying raffles, people concerned about this will affect the community’s image, and finally, people who are trying to genuinely warn other players about possible legal implications.
Unfortunately, when you post in a public space asking directly for money for goods (especially in a manner that is essentially gambling, and you are gambling off what were rewards from tournaments and sponsors), the public is going to judge you for your actions. No one forced you to raffle off your goods, but you have done so in a public space, and will be seen and commented on by the public.
Most people, from what I understand, find the whole raffle process quite embarrassing, and feels it reflects poorly on everyone involved. This isn’t trolling, you have to understand, this is how you are currently being viewed by a large group of people, not out of spite or anger, but simply because they feel that your actions reflect poorly on yourselves, your greater community, and by extension, themselves.
Believe me when i say, the chance of winning a TE stick or winning a headset sure gets me interested in fighting games.
Holy fuck you are stupid as shit. I mean personally I don’t give a fuck about raffling but what the hell does it do for the FGC? Seriously it does nothing but help some people get some money in their pockets and one person might get a stick. Whoo, that sure is helping the scenes.
You know you just joined the site today, what the fuck have you done for the scene?
Fuck you wanna get people interested and want ot join the FGC fucking money matches have a better chance of that, come see me nigga.
No, it doesn’t. There is no “drama” to begin with as it is with people wanting to put a stop to how much of a joke this has become.
As for what I did for the FGC? Be a part of it by playing the games.
(Though I did try to run some online GGPO tournaments a while back on SRK prem, but I dunno if that fits your qualification of “helping the FGC”)
I for one am not at all shocked that some of the people who have “won” these things never actually received their prize.
that guy joined today aria to talk about raffles and pretend in fgc
people like that one stardemon video “omg arkysys at evo sucks they dont have the skullgirl artist or kof shirt waah no lychee player”
Sucker born every minute, etc. I can see why people who could afford to get what they want with their own money don’t because they can sucker idiots up into paying it for them by taking advantage of their FGC celebrity status. It’s wrong, yeah, but I think the blame should be on you people who actually give them money more than the people who ask and take it. It’s the same as the lottery, it’s just a waste of money, yet morons still keep filling up those cupons with their last savings hoping for that 1:1000000000000 chance to win it big, yet 99% of the people don’t. I just don’t get it, why are you people so dim? Why can’t you put one plus two together? Justin Wong asking for money to fix his CPU with a raffle so that he can stream doing another raffle, and you people actually get into it? Man, no wonder your economy is so bad, get bodied son.
Yea, and two people benefiting from a raffle helps the scene out oh so much right?
Shit, why not redirect some of these “donations” to guys who actually need and deserve them like, Spooky. That man has carried this scene on his back and doesn’t get no where near enough props for the amount of work he has put it in for all of us.
lmfao give me a fuckin break
Sad thing I’ve met some people that have partially got into the community due to the raffles, it’s hella weird.
Some people seem to have trouble with the concept of what “illegal” is. It doesn’t matter how much you think “oh, they’re just goodnaturedly scamming folks, its all in good fun” at the point when you get put in front of a judge for it. You’re still going to jail.
Personally I think it also gives a fishy appearance to the FGC. Instead of getting more people to join, I would rather think it would drive people away.
And sure, people could just shut their eyes, they aren’t losing anything by not participating, but then these shady cons would just continue, and its usually the poor folks who waste their money on gambling. The well todo rarely put money in gambling, unless they go in expecting to lose it. It’s for good reason that gambling is highly regulated by most governments.
I have nothing against people asking for donations, as long as they’re honest about it: Say what they’ll put the money toward, publish how much they’ve got and preferably post proofs that they’ve spent it where they told they would. I have happily donated / subscribed several times towards people I thought actually deserved it (mostly streamers so far), because of the services they provide. But I’ll never “donate” to raffles.
Somehow this culture has developed where you can’t be mad at someone if they are “gettin money”. It’s not just in the FGC either, it’s like money has trumped any notions of morality or decency.
funny post.
Example:
Player A is a member of the FGC, follows top players on twitter, FB or even follows me. He see’s the RT about this topic. He can say 1 or 2 things. 1st he can say "this is all BS fk the person hold this, I want his head on a platter. 2nd thing he can say is, “hey I will give it a shot, its a lotto I will try my odds” Player B a buddy of Player A is on the fence about the FGC. He reads the same RT and he too has 1 or 2 things to say, 1st "to hell with that man that’s all BS fk him, 2nd damn if you win you can hook me up with one of those sticks or better yet we booth enter win and split the prize.
Player a or B name is drawn and they win. They now have all these items. They may not want the shirt so to give it to a friend who wonders what the company on the shirt is all about and is curious so he looks into the FGC. Another friend also on the fence ask for a fightpad and its given to him. He now is more interested in the FGC. Another friend ask to buy the MLG pad off of the person who’s name was drawn. He pays hlaf the cost of the original pad and he too may be more interested int he FGC.
So I see countless possibilities of new members joining the FGC all from this.
