I don’t see why this is illegal. If people willingly donate their money to someone for a small chance of having it pay off, and they are aware that the recipient is going to keep all of the money in the end, why does it matter? It’s selfish sure, but it’s not fraud or a scam at all.
Might as well make the lottery illegal while you’re at it, as they do raffles on a much larger scale…

I don’t hate all raffles, I simply harbor no respect for certain folks like jwong for example, raffling just because he doesn’t want to spend his own money to fix his own shit. That kind of shit pisses me off, especially from someone who has a fulltime job(albeit a pro gamer job but there’s a salary nonetheless). Fix your own shit or get a job that allows you to do this.
Also yes, if you can’t afford a hobby then often times that’s just the way it is. My other hobby is tinkering with my car, guess what I gotta do when I want to afford a new part for it but don’t currently have the funds…

State lotteries all adhere to state laws since, as far as I know, most state lotteries are run by some branch of the state government or private company contracted with it.

One not being able to afford their hobby doesn’t equal a rough situation.
A rough situation is being in danger of losing your apartment because you spent all your income on video games knowing you couldn’t afford the hobby in the first place.

I think you misinterpreted me, I understand that literally these raffles are illegal, I just don’t understand why it has to be this way. Personally I think that people should have the right to spend their own money as they please, provided that they are aware what happens to it, and it goes where they think it will go. I don’t think gambling or sports betting for example should be illegal either.
State laws dictate how gambling is held within their borders, Native-American land excluded. So long as those gambling dealings don’t cross state lines, you won’t have to deal with the federal government breathing down your neck. Many moons ago people saw gambling as a immoral vice that can destroy communities (hello, Atlantic City!) and family values.
Super simple answer: Unless they can find a way to tax it, they don’t want you earning cash.
I honestly think they should be illegal. They’re disproportionately played by people with lower incomes, which basically makes them just another regressive tax.
In California they try to justify it by requiring most of the revenue collected from the lottery be used for education, but it’s not like that means education gets more funding. It just means parts of the non-lottery budget which would have gone to education can be used on something else. Of course, the lottery is such at HUGE money maker and the state is in such dire need of revenue that there’s no way they would ever take it away. It’s quite sad when you think about it.

I just moved to California a couple of months ago and was shocked at the handling of the state budget here. If it isn’t criminal, it definitely should be.
Come on… that doesn’t even have anything to do with it being okay to have a hobby that you can’t afford… I guess I used the word rough because it’s general and can be used to describe many different situations. It doesn’t have to mean a life or death situation. If someone pays for a flight and pre-registers for evo, but loses his job or his savings get wiped due to some event, he still has a roof on his head but suddenly his weekend in Vegas is jeopardized. I don’t really see how asking for help could hurt anyone… How does this relate to Skyrim again?

In your made up Daigo scenario, he is doing a raffle for charity reasons. Not only are raffles for charity morally great (I don’t see how you could argue they are not), but they are also legal.
I made that point not to defend raffling, but to point out that even if you cant afford a hobby, that doesn’t mean you should’nt be doing it… We have a cool community; why not ask them legitimately and not take advantage of them?
Not gonna lie. I started a raffle where I was gonna give up sticks I had got earlier this year. Not for profit but to just giveaway to the community. After reading this I am done with it.
I may sound very Ayn Rand about this but the problem with the regressive tax comparison is that participation in the lottery is voluntary. It’s easy to see why people in dire straits will sometimes spend a good portion on their life savings on lottery tickets, and you’re right, it is sad. At the same time though the problem is education, people really don’t understand how small of a chance they have at winning, and that they should find other ways to save/invest their money if they have disposable income. People and governments will always find ways to exploit other’s ignorance and that’s not something new. I just don’t think of a lottery as fraud even though others might.

Not sure if you meant it in that way. Do you mean accept their generosity or sucker people out of money? There is a difference there. I wouldn’t care if top players actually begged for money. I would find it kind of humorous and sad at the same time, even though they should probably just work a part time job instead.
Appealing to people’s greed and stupidity is a great way to make money. You just need the right carrot to dangle in front of them.
Homestly why do people make noise when a raffle is up? Yea its dumb top players are acting like peasents begging for your money in return you get a slim chance of winning but i dont know if anyone knows this but…You do not have to enter its optional.
