senaka is still alive? holy shit.
Theres no way Makoto is above Ken…especially in Japan nowadays.
It probably goes something like Chun, Yun, Dudley, Ken/Yang, Makoto, Akuma/Oro/Urien, Ryu etc…
Stop caring about tiers and they’ll start meaning less.
if ryan does make a big post in his blog, for people traveling to japan for their first time, should we make a new thread for it? seems like it’d be a better place to speak about it than in this thread dedicated to the 3s interviews. plus people could have their own thread to plan out their trip or set up a way to meet up with other srk’ers.
there’s a japan thread in GD.
Just a thank you
Thanks again to Ryan and the rest for going to Japan and bringing us footage of arcades there. Really awesome of you guys. I appreciate what you guys do for the scene. And if you ever stop doing these podcasts because they stop being fun, it’s cool. (We’ll just have to buy more beers at evo. lol) I’m grateful for what I can get.
over in japan would i have to change my us dollars into yen or can i just use dollars over there??
All I did was use ATM’s at 7/11’s. They have a pretty good exchange rate. No reason to bring a bunch of paper cash with you.
ah ok…so i guess we can use US $ over there then…how much would normally be used in a day in japan? (in case anyone is wondering…i plan shit out so not much goes wrong :wgrin:)
I like it. Dudley is a real consistant character. He can do hella damage off everything once he has a meter. He doesn’t even really need meter to get opportunities to take off half your life bar. Many ways to confirm and set up into damage. Has very solid pokes against most regularly used tourney characters. Sure…Makoto has the random death touch factor and Ken has really solid shit as well. Sure Dudley doesn’t have low forward super or j.MK cross up, but if he did he’d be broken any ways. Especially with SA3 he gets one of the best supers and anti airs in the game. It’s extremely risky to jump in on a good Dudley once he has meter.
Dudley can do several things like Ken can do and get better damage off of it. When played at a high level like the Japanese are playing him it would make sense to me. At that level of play you’re simply going to have more opportunities to do the insane damage that Dudley can potentially do and do it very safely like Ken. Makoto is just too random and unsafe any ways. She works in SBO style events but at high level play she becomes easier to read after multiple games and the things she uses that lead to damage can be unsafe and generally have more risk to them than what Dudley is capable of.
also what dj said
:tup::tup::tup::tup::tup:
Also I think Dudley could have had upward mobility not because of him being all around better, but because of the evolving matchups he has with Chun and Yun. Because of their prominence, and how Dudley has an okay time with chun, and SA3 is good for combating Yun, I think it’s more his matchups with those two than anything else changing.
One thing I want to know is who were the ones who told the FFA guys about Dudley being third. If it’s a situation where Arcadia magazine publishes a match-up chart, that’s one thing–they’ll most likely interview all the top players and specialists and ask them about this or that matchup. Or maybe they’ll actually find a way to take data and make observations. But if it’s just a situation where a small circle of the top Tokyo players are going out drinking and working out the match-ups while they’re high, saying “Dudley is third” could mean anything. I mean, is he only third in Tokyo? Is he third once you “reach a certain level?”
I dunno, I’m just a little confused.
Yes, this might very well be the case.
You’re reading too much into this. The distance between 2 spots in tier rankings shouldn’t really change how anyone plays, and is always up for debate. I’m sure you could get several differing opinions on the order of the top 5 in 3s among the best in Japan, whether drunk or not. Furthermore, matchup charts have always reflected players of the highest level in Japan.
Well, I see where you’re coming from; I remember one thread on here from a few years ago when someone wrote up KO’s tier list after talking to him where he put Urien(!!!) up at the top of the tier list. (As I said, this was a few years ago.) So I can see how the tier lists can be subjective depending on which players you ask. And of course, the players at the third strike arcades in Japan are strongest in the world, no question about it.
As for me, I probably have no business worrying about tiers since my scrub ass and all the scrubs I play aren’t even close to maximizing the potential of our characters.
Let’s not get too carried away with this Dudley being 3rd business. At this point I think it’s impossible to make a matchup chart and end up with results that significantly deviate from that of the old SBO3 Tougeki mag. And Dudley moving above Ken requires too many points to shift. In fact, if you look at the evolution of their points, the difference has gotten even larger since then according to this page. Unless there’s a discrepancy of 3 points or less between characters, don’t expect anybody to be usurping anyone else. Hell even that’s a stretch.
This scenario has happened before. I remember a KO list from years back. I think it was Makoto, Yun, Yang, Chun, Ken, Dudley… then Urien? It was posted in a SoCal thread after somebody went to Japan, and I’m betting KO described it exactly as Rikimaru did: “these are the tiers in Japan right now.” Then the matchup chart came out and was 100% textbook.
Just for historical interest, I found the old thread where I first read about this stuff. Also, thanks to gaijinblaze for correcting me–KO had makoto as first and urien as second.
Rockerfeller’s old tier thread:

Some stuff in there that’s pretty interesting to read about in hindsight with what we know in 2008.
Even back then people were jocking Kuroda:)

it would help a tremendous amount of help if someone can be so generous as to fill this out
that way ppl who are first timers wont have to go around asking questions that are repeated in another thread or something
I love the podcasts Gootecks, so much I even donated a few bucks. Have listened to them all at least a couple of times, but upload the rest of the interviews allready! :bgrin: And keep on recording new material. I think we all understand if you are busy dealing with important stuff, but think of it like this; these podcasts is something that the community in the world, besides FFA and Japan, needs!
PS. Nice going in SBO
