Blizzard fucked up, they need to fix their shit. Too lazy to type out a ton of pages, just head to teamliquid.

I thought in SC1, the literal installation of the game you were on had the CD Key, and when you logged in whatever the CD Key of the installation was what was authenticated? Then whatever battle.net account you logged in with worked fine. Which means I can go to a Lan center or something, use hacks on their installation, and if a CD Key gets banned its theirs and not mine. And at the very least all I need to do is create a new battle.net account and restart the cycle?

When you install and type a key in, a hash algorithm spits out a number and if it’s in the valid range you get to install. When you logged on bnet, the only key checking done was to make sure that the key you entered is not already in use, muted, banned, etc. If you go to a lan center and hack, your restriction would be first based on ip, that’s why people would just reset the modem to get past it. If you keep trying to bypass though, they can upgrade you to a temporary key ban. If you hack again then they ban your account. After that, you could make a new account but if you hack again after then they usually disable your key and you have to get a new key. People usually just save these keys for a couple months and then sell them off.

In SC2, you can’t just hash a valid value, you have to actually authenticate your copy. Also if you put other games under the same global account and obtain a restriction, the restriction will now be tied to your global account and can be used to restrict you from all games. So hacking in SC2 and getting your global account banned would also get you banned from WoW if your global account was tied to it.

Blizzard Real ID system sparks controversy

World of Warcraft maker limiting forum posting, cross-game chat, other Battle.net features to those who sign up using their real names; user outcry thread tops 30,000 posts.

Blizzard boasts one of the largest and most engaged user communities of any developer in the world. The benefits of such a following are obvious, but the downside becomes similarly stark when the company runs afoul of its user base.

The company yesterday unveiled its new Real ID system, a service that allows friends to easily follow each other’s activities in Blizzard games like World of Warcraft. It also introduces cross-game chat and social networking features that allow users to see not just their friends, but also their friends’ friends.

However, Blizzard is requiring users to register for the service with their real names. And beginning with the Starcraft II message boards this month, the developer is changing its forums to require users to post under their Real ID names. Blizzard fans expressing privacy concerns–as well as those dismissing such worries–have flocked to the company’s still-anonymous official forums, combining to produce more than 30,000 messages in a 1,500-pages-long thread.

“The official forums have always been a great place to discuss the latest info on our games, offer ideas and suggestions, and share experiences with other players,” a Blizzard representative posted in a separate thread explaining the changes. “However, the forums have also earned a reputation as a place where flame wars, trolling, and other unpleasantness run wild. Removing the veil of anonymity typical to online dialogue will contribute to a more positive forum environment, promote constructive conversations, and connect the Blizzard community in ways they haven?t been connected before.”

While the Starcraft II forums will undergo the switch to Real ID this month, other Blizzard forums will have some time before the switchover. The World of Warcraft forums are expected to require Real ID around the time of the Cataclysm expansion’s launch later this year.

It’s only for super-fancy UMS maps should the creator decide to put a price on it. None of the premium maps are even going to be made by Blizz apparently so I’m kinda okay with it.
