To me the map isn’t just funny because of rick rolling, it’s also hilarious because of the implications. Blizzard stated that they removed chat rooms from BNet 2 because of ‘legal reasons’. They wanted to get rid of the bots selling accounts, people having nerd cyber sex, and other stupid shit…but allowing full-fledged videos in user made maps opens an entirely different can of worms. People will be able to make ‘maps’ that are just videos of 2 girls 1 cup or insert nastiness here. Think of the lawsuits that could come from a mom allowing their child to play a game and basically getting a window into the wonderful world of pornography.
I’m in the “fuck bnet 2.0” crowd. LAN is important. It allows you to play the game you paid for whenever you want.
Yeah, that’s the first thought that came into my mind too. Embedding videos is a raelly bad idea. What good can come of it? Fan vids before a game?
When I played SC, I first enjoyed the single player a lot, but that didn’t last too long. LAN was a must. Does anyone remember how laggy BNET was and how almost everyone on BNET just hacks?
I’m astonished by how stupid the reasoning for removing LAN is. To stop piracy? Lol, one thing companies fail to realize is no matter how hard you try hackers will always win. There is no such thing as a perfect security system, all you’re doing is delaying the inevitable. The people who were gonna pirate the game are still gonna do it and you can’t stop them. All Blizzard is doing in the end is hurting the people who actually went out and honestly bought the game. Why punish all the people who legally obtained the game to try and stop something you know you can’t?
EDIT:
Actually this is going to make them lose more money than they gain. There will still be the same number of people who pirate the game, but on top of that they’re losing a lot of customers who won’t put up with the bull shit, and they’re spending a lot of funding on DRM. If they just stop trying so hard to stop piracy (which they can’t stop anyways) then they wouldn’t be losing so many customers and have to waste money on pointless DRM.
I can’t speak for SC1’s current state on B.net, but Warcraft 3 ladder is unplayable. Hacking runs rampant. Map hacks, drop hacks…you name it. Blizzard issues bans maybe once every couple of months. And patches once every 6 months (if that). Of course, new hacks show up in a week and the cycle continues.
I’m sure SC2 will have more priority than a 7 year old game, but I am not confident in Blizzards ability to stay on top of hacking (more specifically, prevention)(. And with no LAN, there won’t be any other options. Just more food for though.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still buying the game. If it comes down to having to download a cracked version to get LAN support though, I won’t hesitate for a moment. Fuck latency and fuck map hackers. It’s like stopping people from playing Street Fighter in person.
Please don’t give Capcom any ideas.
Actually, one Advantage to the system they have no is the ability to permanently ban a hacker. Before, you just had to make a new account which was free. Now, your CD key is tied to your account. Get caught hacking, you’re dropping another $60 for a copy of the game if you want to keep playing. Not that there wont be hackers, but I foresee LESS of an issue because of this fact
Wrong. Your CD key was always tied to your game. If you got realm down back in the day which restricted your ip, if you would keep bypassing ip by changing your ip then they would upgrade you to a key ban, they’re just mad lenient about giving key bans because they want you to return.
Can someone PM me with an offline mode patch so i can watch replays during the next few weeks until bnet comes back online?
so beta ends today? anyone know anything about private servers? 1 month+ of no crafting makes me sad
“Open With” the replay file you want to watch with the sc2 beta executable. Not all replay files work, there are some issue with version compatibility. i’ve also heard there are some launchers people have whipped up on the side that can handle all beta versions, but i haven’t tried them personally.
Sad that beta phase 1 is over
Come soon phase 2.
I thought in SC1, the literal installation of the game you were on had the CD Key, and when you logged in whatever the CD Key of the installation was what was authenticated? Then whatever battle.net account you logged in with worked fine. Which means I can go to a Lan center or something, use hacks on their installation, and if a CD Key gets banned its theirs and not mine. And at the very least all I need to do is create a new battle.net account and restart the cycle?
daaaaaaaaaaaamnit, im going thru withdrawal
But also, realize that before anybody could sell their D2 key off after they were done with the game, leading to this whole market of cd key selling that went on. That isn’t how it works here, because once you register the CD key, its not valid for anybody else to use, so you will never see a market of resold cd-keys for SC2 like you did with D2/sc/war3. It just won’t happen.
Neither will the cd key generators, ever since WoW they’ve changed the way they do CD Key Authentication. Before it was too expensive to set up a system that constantly verified CD Keys, so they just created an algorithm and generated a bunch of keys. When you enter a key, it just checks if its valid and matches the algorithm, if it does you pass. With enough keys, you can reverse engineer the algorithm (or by stepping through the assembly code in a debugger, and figuring out the algorithm). However, ever since WoW, they simply set up a central computer that stores every key thats been printed, and then can check against that central computer to verify the key being used was a legit key that was generated by Blizzard, and hasn’t been used yet. This is why you don’t see World of Warcraft cd key generators and people making infinite accounts, and why they resort to STEALING other peoples accounts to spam/steal gold/sell gold. I expect to see a fair share of SC2 accounts being trojaned (especially since they’re tied to Wow accounts now, through the Battle.net account) and then used to send spam to other players, probably joining games and spamming (if they dont set up chat channels) or hijacking the accounts to test new hacks, to determine if they’re undetectable or not. Definitely invest in one of the account verifiers (or get the free app for iPhone and Droid) to secure your account, I learned the hard way.
Regardless, this is a minor change, but it makes it very hard for players who are used to just creating new accounts when hacked from being able to get away with it. At the same time, it makes it hard for people who get banned for hacking via false positive because they’re out the full cost of the game. But I think blizzard is definitely going in the right direction with this small change to curb hacking. Also, the fact that my key is tied to my account hurts the resellability and shareability of the game, but like Steam it gives me benifits back for this loss (ability to access my game collection anywhere at any time)

SC2 beta phase 2 should start in a couple days. Can’t wait to see the changes they make on b.net 2.0 and see if it’s worthy of my purchase.
Beta phase 2 is here!.. kinda.
No servers yet but at least you can dl the patch.
Guess I can start playing this again after EVO
