StarCraft II Matchmaking Thread

Yes. Not like TF2 or MvC2 (at my level). =/ I can only play like 5 games before I can’t take it. I’m leveling up tho. I’m like 12th in Silver league (lol). But yeah, it’s fun – just kinda stressful. 'Cause I’m a jerk, I like playing campaign mode more than versus. I suppose it’s cause I suck and I cant “sandbox” versus mode yet like I can with campaign.

Starcraft 2 makes me want to throw dead babies at people with down syndrome

I agree the game isn’t relaxing but really stressful to me too.

man i just got put into platinum league for 2s and im getting owned. shit 1 win from gold rank 30 all the sudden 60 in platinum how does that work lol

lol, i’m #2 in silver league… I’m scared to play.

The ranking system has a lot going on behind it, usually it matches you up with people whom it thinks you should be even with; so if you’re gold and you do good, it starts pairing you with platinum players. If you can win here, it basically realizes you’re good enough for that level and eventually it promotes you.

I believe it was explained like this: You have your visible ranking, and then you have your behind the scenes “expected” ranking. As you play, your visible ranking goes up, but the hidden expected ranking that bnet uses might be wildly different (for one, your bonus pool points don’t get factored into this number). This is the number used to find your opponents. Theres a second sort of fuzzy number that fluxuates depending on how good it thinks it knows your skill level, so if you lose and win about 50% its harder for them to figure out where to place you. Once the system feels is has a handle on where your skill level is accurately, you get a promotion/demotion based on that.

It sounds like what happened is your got placed into gold, but you were really close to that cusp between plat and gold (you probably lost to some low level plat players and got placed a bit below them), so that first win in gold might have been vs somebody with a solid platinum ranking, enough to push you up.

Personally, I havent had time to play since placing into platinum, I agree its not something you sit down and casually do, you have to have concentration and commit to it

just dropping by to say how hard it is to play zvt early game. 1/1/1 can fuck with me so bad (esp. on LT). then again z is my offrace but still, i feel liek zvt is ridiculously hard in sc2.

btw collossi in kulas are the shiet ^^

edit: as for the stressful part i feel way more stressed when playing BW. but generally in RTS’s i feel stressed pressured when im in a situation where i dont get my scouting in and i’m fearing wut type of attack is coming

I beat plat players all the time and I’m still gold :frowning:

Edit: Gotta stop playing when I’m fucked up. I’ve gotta say 15+ of my losses are a result of me being drunk/high and deciding to play 5-6 more just to ‘prove myself’. Shit never works out.

There are a few things that make me not one to play SC2 right now…

 1. The game feels incomplete (dud, we gotta wait for the other two games)
 2. Zerg are weak when compared to Protoss and Terran
 3. Zerg as a race feels incomplete
 4. Too much concentration and effort is needed to play decently… This is NOT a game for the casual gamer. Sure, campaign mode is fun as fuck, but it’s short…

So what do I have left after beating the campaign? Multiplayer. And the Zerg are weak, so why bother? As is, I don’t even think SC2 makes much sence as a viable tournament game. Just pick Terran and have a gazillion early options available to you. Or pick Protoss and Mass Void Rays. Pick Zerg and your dead…

I’m not going to say Zerg aren’t imbalanced but you’re selling the game short.

Pretty much, “zerg might be weak” but by no means are the under powered, they just dont have some of the shenanigans toss and terrain have. (yet)

Also i look for to toss and zerg expansions I wonder if they will use each game as a opportunity to introduce new units are as major patches.

but I have to because it simply is. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic game. But I’ve not that much incentive to play multiplayer when a race is glaringly weaker that the other two. I play random, so I have an idea. It’s way easier to win a game as protoss/terran while playing poorly but you simply can’t when playing as the zerg. As is, there’s NOTHING cool about the zerg and I feel that the are going to get a nice upgrade in the later expansion. As is, it’s just not there…

crazy game we had last night

LOL. This strategy never works for me even against zerg and I’m #2 in Gold League. If someone is successfully using this against you then heh you’re the problem. This strategy is only viable if you don’t think the other player is going to attack you in the first 13-15 minutes of a game. Like seriously, what are you even doing at this time if not massing a huge army and at least attacking expansions?

If you lose to Mass Void Rays, you deserve to lose.

You have a point about Zerg however, they do feel slightly underpowered.

i dont find zergs underpowered at all. well i think majority if my wins come from zergs. speedlings and banelings are great early game. depending what they get such like lings, zlots and marines basically low tier units they get owned by banelings. a few mutas for harass money and speedlings are also great to hit their income if its weak. when i see mass void rays hydras and those things that turn into guardians or w/e i keep forgetting their name owns air. ultras are great tank.

i mean zergs can be weak in the beginning but with great microing dang dude they really can do wonders. well i mean some ppl are good at different races. i use to play zergs all the time in sc1. infesters are great im starting to use them more. for some reason i like 2 queens instead of one because of extra defense. dunno just imo i dont think zerg is weak at all. late game they mass like fucking monsters but usually never gets to that point anyways in plat league.

i wish i can go back to gold i miss winning lolz plat is gettin a bit challenging but its lvling up my game. even though im losing i enjoy the game. only thing that gets me mad when i get paired with dumb pub partners lolz. if anyone is down for 2s in west i dont mind playing some just along we lvl up!

Zerg is the only race I play but I’ve been able to watch one toss video on 4 gate pushes and win games.

…there’s something wrong with that. I’ve off-raced and done better WAY faster than with my main race. I’m not talking just in random custom games but vs. the same players I play when I hit auto match. Shit is ridiculous. I’ve looked up youtube videos on how to do 1/1/1 and dedicated mech as well, shit doesn’t look any harder. Hopefully Zerg gets some kind of a break in terms of power level.

yeah the ranking system is weird. a few hours ago i was silver rank 50, and now im platinum rank 18 ROFLCOPTER!

here’s how it went down: I lost five humiliating defeats IN A ROW to platinum/gold players. they were terran, i was protoss, i lost to the usual marauder medivac bs. in one game we did a base swap where i destroyed all his svcs and CC, but his remaining units still wiped out my main base AND expansion. UGH. Then i won ONE GAME finally and got immediately promoted to gold (LOL). then, I won two games in a row and got promoted to platinum. LOL! out of curiosity i decided to test myself out. I won one and lost one, but i definitely dont belong in platinum, seeing as how earlier those platinum players tore me a new one.

i can only beat terran if they dont do pure marauder medivac. the two wins i got against terran they were way too passive doing shit like building bunkers and turrets. that bought me enough time to really crank out the immortals.

i’m watching replays of my losses and im not so sure 4 gate is a good idea vs terran. if they are doing 3 rax pumping out marauders it seems like the marauders will always win. so im going to start experimenting with getting my robotics out earlier so i have some extra firepower.

also i agree with SC being stressful as shit. i think in mvc2, which i could play for hours and be fine, the SC 1v1 games last for 10-20 minutes, making you more emotionally invested, making each match more stressful. it even makes it hard for me to watch replays where i lose, even though clearly its the best way to improve, by identifying key areas where you fucked up and need improvement. 2v2 and 3v3 otoh are totally fun and relaxing. in those games i try to experiment more and fuck around, since your teammates can carry you if you fuck up.

MMM can be wiped out by zlots but dont get to much early on because you can get kited if they have stim, sentry, stalkers , immortals and colossus. you gonna have to tech and learn how to use sentrys to fight on ramps (if there is one) against terrains. the sentrys can block while stalkers pick some off while immortal is building if they rush. so this is what i do 9 pylon 14 gateway and gas. from there you would build cybercore then robotic and another gateway in that order it may be tough because they will most likely out mass you in the beginning. but once those immortals come out to own the marauders, which you would build like 2-3 immortals to handle them, and from there you should have 2 colossus to own marines . while pumping out zlots with charge while you pump out your other stuff. charge zlots and immortals will rape marauders. warp prism that air unit thing allows great ways to harass terrains with warpgates. usually i would hit their money.

i hope that helps from there you gotta work from your own to respond to what they are trying to counter back against you with.

oh and dont forget to upgrade the units extra skills like long range and etc.

two ways you can handle medivac/marauder

1.) go fast void ray and harass, while using sentries to prevent access from your base. While you harass with void ray, it forces terran to defend and go mass marines. As your harassing, switch to 4 gate charged zealots --> DT = easy win

2.) Stall early with sentry and some stalkers/zealots and tech to colossus. Honestly, 4 gate is not the way to go, you need AOE to win the match against terran
