well, imo, aside from Ralph McQuarrie and John Williams, the other most influential people to make A New Hope the work of genius it ended up becoming were the editors.
If you wanna learn how to commit masterful editing, watch Stat Wars ANH. it really is an exercise in editing. Its genius editing is why I like ANH more than Empire. I could care less about the people who claim its better than the 1st.

like Richard Chew said, when they cut the movie, they cut it to show each of the main characters in the most 3 dimensional depiction. meaning their editing wasn’t plot driven but character driven.
if you remember the part where R2D2 is going through the canyon and the jawa kidnap him, that scene really isn’t that necessary plotwise, but they cut it long enough where they were able to give a droid, actual personality in making him seem worried that he just took a wrong turn and was nervous cuz R2 felt he was gonna get jacked. which he was. but the point is is that, that scene, serves no other purpose other than to give R2 personality. So you end up caring about him.
Also, they cut the movie in a way where the pace of the movie is pretty high and frenetic from start to finish. if you notice there’s no fade to black cuts except for just one.
its just masterful editing.

Not only did they tie in things from previous episodes (pun intended with the painted TIE), but all the action scenes were on point - the swordfight in the hyperdrive room was a great throwback to the fight from Episode 1 (one of the good things about that movie). Meanwhile, dropping in Ahsoka and Vader at the very end just raises the stakes for the next season, while at the same time building on the blocks laid down by having appearances by Tarkin, Yoda, Lando, etc. - stuff that seemed frivolous at first, but now helps give the series a sense of being integrated into the greater Star Wars universe.
