Star Trek: Discovery 2017 Thread

To play Devil’s advocate, the TOS is an Action Adventure series.

not in the way the (new)movies are.

The new movies are all action. Action and blazing lights all over the place.

Am digging this new show because its giving me a TNG without the campy bullshit vibe with JJ Abrams effects. Only 2 episodes lol a lot can change but its a great impression so far.

Yeah it was worst, it was a low budget 1960s Action Adventure series that as greatly limited on what they can do due to budget and the technical constants of a 1960’s TV show.
The difference is in the 1960s the TV Networks would only allow a Sci Fi show to be billed as Action Adventure, a Tv series that only running now via Streaming video service should have more free range but this is the same Network that first allowed 72 Episodes of a Sci Fi Action adventure from the 60s. As long as CBS is at the helm thats what we will get.

It’s decent for the time we’re in. Let’s face it, they haven’t been able to make Star Trek right since DS9. I think it’s because everyone loved DS9 for doing shit like In the Pale Moonlight, and ever since that they’re trying to be all dark and brooding and “fuck peace and understanding and being a good guy”. Nevermind that the entire goddamn point of what made that episode good was that 1) generally speaking DS9 was fairly true to the Federation as the good guys who didn’t do shit like this, and 2) most of the episode focuses on Sisko trying to avoid doing scummy shit because this is an exception rather than a rule.

The Dominion shit worked (initially at least) because it was designed to show the Federation as being the same good guys forced into a situation where it’s really, really difficult to be the good guys. The same goes for the Bajorans. It’s easy to be a rational society that will only listen to reason when everyone in it is an atheist who jacks off to science, but when you have to deal with a deeply religious and spiritual people, you kind of have to take a different approach or you’ll end up being a condescending douchebag. That was the point. To show how the Federation as the good guys who don’t like conflict and see themselves as this enlightened beacon of hope in the galaxy deal with situations where their usual approach might be less than optimal.

But nowadays people seem to have taken this to mean we always need to be morally ambiguous, because everyone loves that shit! So instead of the conflict being about fundamentally good people struggling with applying their ethical code to unusual situations and stay true to their values, we now had captains selling weapons of mass destruction to the Borg. It’s just cool to shit on the Federation now. They’re corrupt, hypocritical shitheads who are just as liable to stab people in the back as anyone else.

You can’t make In the Pale Moonlight if every episode is about how your crew does sneaky shit and murders people. War, fighting, backstabbing and intrigue has its place, even TOS and TNG had that stuff, but it should be the exception rather than the rule. Best of Both Worlds is good because most of TNG is not about wars, and suddenly you have a fucking war with an enemy that can’t be reasoned with at all.

Anyway, tl;dr: it’s not exactly what I wanted, but so far it’s surprisingly good considering how writers have consistently fucked up what made Star Trek good for so long. It at least can go places, even if I’m sceptical about the direction it will be going from here. I won’t be too quick to judge considering how both TNG and DS9 weren’t particularly good until later in their runs.

If this series does good expect Kirk and Spock to be introduced. We might even get classic uniform changes during later seasons. If the team is passionate about ST it could happen.

I’m kinda looking forward to the next episode.

Just watched episode 3. Hahaha, wtf is this show??? I’m loving it!

Bruh, this new captain is sinister af.

In a way Discovery reminds me of Stargate Universe, which I really loved. A show that took the original formula and made it real dark and serious, taking real risks in the process. I just hope Discovery lasts way longer.

lmfao they roomed a criminal with a cadet. hahaha

I like how the show looks and how the action was directed.
I fucking hate the main character though and how little the show has to do with Star Trek.

At least it’s something new and I’ll keep on watching, but I personally would’ve liked it better if it either wasn’t named Star Trek or would play in the future instead of the past.

Yeah a lot of the complains seem to be about breaking canon. I would have preferred if it was set in the future as well. The molecules thing could even be a new warp drive they are using in the future.

ST nerds seem to REALLY HATE the show doe, lul.

Since when Star Trek has a cohesive Canon?

ST canon was more of a mess than the Star Wars Canon before Disney did the smart thing and Axe the EU.

Gene Roddenberry didn’t know what his own canon was for ST, how you expect new writers to do the same.

“Universal law is for lackeys. Context is for Kings.”

Yeah, the new Captain ain’t like the old ones

Pfffftttt… All I gotta say is if Sisko was in charge, he would have given that Klingon ship a Vulcan House party! pew pew pew, muthafucka!

Klingons bringing thier dead on board for some religious ceremony, destroys the ship. This is why religion sucks.

WHY did only two people board the gigantic Klingon ship crawling with thousands of warriors to capture ONE? That’s like sticking your hand in a river full of piranha to grab a particular piranha. Also, WHY did the captain go? Did all their red shirts get killed off already?

Klingons are jacked looking, but not horrible.

Why they gotta put da black woman in prison like dat? Is she wearing an orange jumpsuit?? Mmmhmmm…

Overall, I’m still going to keep watching this show.

So far its first few episodes are light years ahead of TNG’s first season. I swear, I almost gave that show up before the first season ended and it has NOT aged well… pre-bord TNG was ass.

If nothing else, captain Lucius Malfoy seems like a total boss from that first episode.

And as someone who hasn’t really watched any of the older Star Trek-series, this one has started off pretty nicely to me. I’m not sure why people are as angry as they are (aside from ruining angsty teen memories etc etc), I’m definitely going to keep watching this.

You could be asking that since TOS. It’s always the most critical crew going off to the most dangerous missions. It’s basic ST.

Yeah and it has always bugged me since i was old enough to know better. Lol

That Alice in Wonderland quoting during the Jefferies tube scene was legit, shit had more horror tension in it that Prometheus, Covenant and pretty much every actual horror movie made since 1991.

That alien monster is going to be a big part of the show too according to the aftershow special.

I’m surprised they haven’t played with the idea yet of a Star Trek show focusing not on the officers and stuff, but like a security team on a ship. They would be sent out to missions and shit, while the bridge crew would be almost completely absent from the show. Then they find out the captain is evil or some shit and the show writes itself.

im confused is this taking place during original series or the rebooted series? this shit is offically gundam timelines for americans.
