Great post FMJ, the top 8 idea for the team tournaments is awesome. I’m definitely in favor of forcing people to earn their spots rather than know the right people…
One thing though…when you asked how new people are getting good at ST, the answer seems to be AE on XBox Live. An XBL Honda player made final 8 at this year’s Evo, and Afrolegends got 9th. So while the games are clearly different, maybe the core skills carry over from AE to ST?
But yeah, it just seems there’s no really good way to keep ST as a main game, due to what Sabre mentioned regarding the arcade issue…
Now, TTT is interesting. Over on the TZ forums, I routinely see people bitch about how 4 was trash (this part is true, at least) and 5 is “random” and TTT is a “skill” game while the newer ones aren’t. And yet, come tourney time, didn’t TTT have one of the lowest turnouts if not the lowest? You could almost say it’s the Alpha 3 of the 3D world. =P
Plus, I think new school may finally be catching on to what is so great about ST because of AE. I mean, I never really played much ST at the arcade (even though we have it here) until AE came out. Now that I’ve found out that AE is so different from ST I’ve gone to playing the arcade game, and just using AE for basic learning. It allows you to get basics down in training mode and then go learn the intricacies at the arcade.

I say why not just run AE and be done with it? That way, I can bring Hyper Blanka out of retirement and show that ST Ryu vs Hyper Blanka is not a lost cause.

I remember 13 years ago when I was a kid and was reading about the SF2 Tournaments in Gamepro. I was just a little kid learning about SF for the first time. And Mike Watson was raved about as a master SF player. And I still have the Super Turbo strategy guide from Gamepro that had tiers and combos from all the top players like Mike Watson and Eddie Lee.

I don’t remember anyone complaining when the tournament was on dreamcast, lets just do it on that. Sure it’s not arcade but it’s better than nothing. I’ve never played on the ps version, and from what I hear I now have no plans to. AE is no good because o.sagat gets nerfed big time.

FMJ: Retiring ST is not an option because it still NEEDS to be part of the Main selection. Maybe if some new games were actually coming out and the list of tournament games was increasing…id agree with you. There is nothing coming out, we are still playing the SAME games. So whats the reason to retire a game? ST still pulls more heads year after year, US is getting much better at 3s, MVC2 now has new life and we are finally gifted with a new T5. Taking out ST isnt going to solve anything, we just have to agree on what version EVO will have from here on out and stick with it. Just like every one plays dc mvc2, its the norm now. Mayeb we will get lucky and capcom will come out with another classics and actually have ST in the mix, but until then i think our only option is DC or emulated xbox.
About the Cigarbob situation, he doesnt have to do this alone you know. All he needs is someone sponsoring for the parts and he can hand over the blue prints to cannons or anyone else he seems fit that could do the job right and there you go. What people want is no solo man job, it be insane to ask cigarbob to make all these cabinets all by himself again. Get some heads to help out, cannons to supply the material and there you have it. erm, Johnny, I don’t think it’s fair for you to bash Watson and say “YOU CAN’T WIN SBO HARDEEHARHAR” and bet an extremely large amount of money (which I don’t think you have, by the way), to do something that nobody, much less you, would be able to do.
The point that he’s played over 1000 money matches and will gladly do more? The fact that he isn’t afraid of someone that can’t even play the games at even the most basic level yet all that person can do is talk?
