SSF4 Lessons with Justin Wong, Mike Ross, Marn and Gootecks

Its also a FUCKING VIDEO GAME!

Comparing this to piano, violin and flute( yanno, things people can actually make a career out of) is basically saying that you can make a career at Street Fighter. Just hope that you make top 3- 8 every single time and you’ll actually be set.

Lol throwing money away for a 1/3- 1/8 Chance?

Fucking retarded. 45$ per hour to play a video game?

LMAO!!! paid to tuitor a video game??? are you fucking serious?? man only retarded would spend this kind of money nobody give a shit if your good at video games and if you retard out there have too much money then donate them to charity for good cost!!

Clearly you gotta be retard for needing somebody as a coach to improve yourself in a video game, you can learn all that by yourself.

I don’t get why people think 35$ an hour is a lot of money. I used to work freelance and charged up to 250 euros an hour. Now I have a good steady job and I make about 35 euros an hour. That’s well over 50$ an hour. I have to work less than 60 minutes to pay for one hour with J Wong. Doesn’t sound bad.

And: he is a PRO gamer. My golf pro charges 25 euros a half hour for lessons. About the same as the 35$ J Wong charges. But I suppose I could learn golf from watching youtube videos if I am to believe some of the people on the forums…

And my golf pro never won any tournaments.

If you don’t want to pay 35$ for a lesson then don’t. But don’t hate on someone because he does pay that. And people pay. And apparently people are satisfied. That’s what a free market is.

Lol At comparing golf and video games.

very true

also very true

this makes sense

i mean if u wanna pay to get better at ssf4 you are taking this game way 2 seriously …it’s actually much easier than u think .

but lessons from j wong on MVC2 would make sense …as he is the undisputed best of all time at that …and MVC2 takes much more skill than ssf4 ever will

All these comments about people taking “fucking video games too seriously” and “you can learn it all yourself”, need to consider that its really not your position to say how serious they should be taking anything. If a person has a desire to be an absolutely successful as a video gamer, why is that frowned upon, on a video game forum? True you may be a casual gamer like myself, but to a person who might not have alot of time but still wants to achieve the same ends, this is a viable option, and its not retarded in the least bit.

Because I could say “you are a fucking retard if you pay Jiffy Lube for a 30$oil change cuz you can do it yourself for $10 IN 15 MINUTES!!!” How many of you people change your own oil in your car? How many of you people pay someone to work on your car or home? Have you ever had someone service an item for you, a fight stick maybe? Would you be wasting your money for paying for a legitimate service? No. Granted, you could go to Barnes&Nobles and pick up countless books on how to Do-It-Yourself, but how many of you motherfuckers actually take time to learn every single goddamn thing to do it yourself?

Come on now people, we are accustomed to paying people for services we are not skilled enough/too lazy/too little time etc to do, but the truth is, we could do just about anything ourselves if we’ve got time and dedication.

The point is, not everyones circumstances are the same, so if a person wants to take street fighter lessons and wants to get better, then more power to you for admitting you need assistance in a certain area, whether it be a video game or otherwise. Would you prefer he quit over frustration? The pros who offer these services are no different than the Jiffy-Lube related companies who charge for minor service that you could do yourself.

Oh, and before one of you guys say “BUT AN OIL CHANGE IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM A VIDEO GAME”, go back and read the analogy and TRY to be reasonable.

Most people who pay for lessons for instruments or whatever don’t intend to make a career out of it either, they just have more money than they need.

I’m just saying, you can pick up the same things they’ll be telling you by just messing around with friends for an afternoon or two. It would also be much more enjoyable, and i wouldn’t be spending (hard earned) cash money.

As i recall, aren’t these lessons online anyways? How much could you possibly learn without the actual human interaction. Is it just gonna be an hour of “you’re doing it wrong, do this?” That’s a ripoff if you ask me.

yea i would rather learn from the good players in my area, or someone in the gen or ibuki forums giving me tips if we do a lobby. i have better use for my money then getting advice even if they are a pro player. but hey it your guys money do what you wish. but i will get better by finding my own mistakes and getting advice from my community.

I’d be interested in this if I could get my gameplay to a point where execution is no longer something I worry about. When you feel like you’ve hit a wall and you just can’t figure out what your doing wrong fundamentally, these guys could help you identify it.

Going back to what PopTags said about the MMO… it’s really about this:

“How much do you value your time?”

When I played WoW I bought gold at one point, not because I couldn’t of just farmed it myself, but because to me, it was worth the $20 or $30 to NOT waste my time doing something I hated for 10 hours. Instead I was able to pay that fee, to bypass the grind and get right down to having fun. Is it a shame those games require that kind of mentality? Yes, and that’s why I decided it wasn’t worth my time (which I value) to continue down that road.

Besides, if you don’t spend that $40 on a private lesson with Justin Wong, you would probably just waste it on something equally irrelevant in the long term anyway.

You can’t put a price on a smile.

It’s only worth it to those who actually want it.

If you’re bias towards spending money on lessons in the first place then of course this seems like a stupid idea. However, if you’re open minded and realize that it’s more valuable to others then it’s not a bad idea.

The more you actually think about it, the more people realize this.

I understand where you’re coming from though.

I’m trying to be completely unbiased about it. Do with your money what you will, but realize that there are other alternatives that may be more memorable/worthwhile to the average SF player.

I’d probably appreciate the idea more if it was done offline, in real life. Granted, this would be more of a local thing situated to where those players currently reside. However, you’d get more bang for your buck which is what i’m trying to get at.

So someone explain to me why folks diss gootecks…

no seriously… why. Yes I know he is NOT the top top player anymore nor have the limelight but he still is good correct?? Im just saying cause people making it as if he is a scrub of some sort which I don’t believe (i can be correct) he is.

You simplified everything I said in basically the first two sentences. Thank you

Also @ Wapostyle, I totally know about the MMO “wasting my time farming” bullcrap. I had that same grind in FFXI and it was horrible.

Also, i’ll bring up the whole online issue again with the musical instrument example…

Would you not get more out of the lessons if someone was instructing you in person as to which string to pluck, positioning of the fingers on the keys of the piano, scales, etc?

Now try instructing someone those exact same things over the phone, or messenger service. It gets unnecessarily difficult, and takes up alot of valuable time. All of a sudden, that hour you paid for was spent explaining to you that what you were doing is wrong, and the customer got next to nothing out of it. I say this out of concern for newer players trying to improve their game. For some more experienced players, maybe this is a great opportunity, but for your average player, it could just become a failed investment.

Go out, find your local scene, connect with players, get friendlies in, and talk about it whenever theirs an audience for it. These will benefit you more, and who knows, eventually you might become a celebrity in your local scene.

an incredibly small portion of the people that take lessons for musical instruments ever do anything with it that would generate revenue. i would guess that if you looked at the pool of people who took music lessons, they spend more time play video games than instruments.

I totally agree with this statement, especially the bolded.

But in honesty, its really harsh to assume that for an entire hour, they’ll be coaching you on things as minor as finger placement and timing etc. If none of us have ever tried the service, we can’t say exactly what is going to be covered.

I agree that over the skype thing may be tricky, but if someone is asking Wong how to do a fucking hadoken, or something else thats pretty basic, then yeah you’re gonna be shitting dollar bills down the toilet. I’m willing to bet that they have MORE TO IT than simply telling you “you did that combo wrong, do it like this: [places webcam to show finger placement]”. For instance, they could offer you advice on character matchups, exploits with your main, things of importance like spacing, not jumping alot, setting up different scenarios etc.

I’ll definately say the local scene is better, but for those who may not have the scene but have the resources, or for someone preparing for a major or something, I can’t see this as being a waste of money.

wish i had a scene… oh well, also to much money for lessons when most of that info you can find online if you look deep enough…

Haters…
