SSF4 is cursed with bad game design and Ultra won't change that

Yes.

This thread made me feel relieved 'cause instead of SF4 (which EVERYONE played), I chose to play BlazBlue.

Not to split hairs but it takes longer for people to figure out if a fighter is bad compared to a shooter. You can tell a shooter is bad within the first 2-3 hours. In a fighter you have to be playing for a while or in a pressure cooker situation against dudes in your own skill level or higher to figure it out. That is unless the game is just that bad to begin with like the new JoJo.

OP, I must say that your post is good but more of a lazy mans stand point

When I started as an 09er I got the game as a gift, the only sf I played a bit before was third strike bit I didn’t play it well. I picked up the manual and read it page by page where it explained everything a beginner should know and what all the symbols in the command list mean.

Next I popped it in and nothing was weird, I tried out everything and it worked except fadc with was alien abit to do from dp.

As for combos, SF4 is the easiest combo game there is tied with SFxT with boost series.
The only way to get good with combos is to grind it out in the training room. I used to complain about how hard one frame links were but after watching Amiyu nail that shit consistently I knew I had myself to blame, I went in and put in the work and now its easy as pie.

If u want long combo try dudley, just cancel to ex mgb and follow up duck upper and be done with it.

I can say that MK9 or Injustice are crap just by looking at their gameplay videos.

What I think is really the problem here is that OP thinks he’s good at video games and so must be good at this game but from what I’ve read he is just good at cod and madden. Though his claims about this game are legitimate, I wouldn’t put too much importance on what he says because you don’t know how to do that away from the front page.

Hooray!

Throws are weak as is. The large tech window and the fact you don’t have to commit as heavily to the throw tech makes it hard to throw someone when they are well disciplined on defense.

If you want easy combo’s target combos are easy enough, why not start with someone like Dudley who’s target combo’s can cancel into special/super also his ultra 2 can be used in a multitude of ways.

What exactly about that post has anything to do with game design?

who are these random scrubs marking my post as “off topic”

it is on topic you shitty-ass post09er nobody

One frame links are absolutely a design topic. I have to say, when I watched a video that explained the difference between chains and links (1 frame timing and you can only cancel into a special with link), my first thought was “Why in the name of all that is holy would you put this in the game?”

From a design standpoint, the chain vs. link thing is honestly one of the worst pieces of game design I’ve ever seen. Most things that add excess complexity to a game AT LEAST also add SOME strategic complexity as well. Some. The three tiers of focus attacks are like this. But links vs. chains add nothing. If you mess up the timing and get a chain, it still combos. You just can’t cancel it into a special. Why? Because we want an artificially high execution barrier between new players and the actual game, so we can limit our audience even further in an already niche genre! It just makes sense.

Fortunately, the basic neutral game quite good and you can do a lot with just fundamentals. That’s more than I can say for some other fighting games.

Learning to play the game by actually playing it has everything to do with good game design and Street Fighter does a very poor job at that, since without outside resources your progression is severely hampered and you start developing very bad habits.

I don’t say you shouldn’t have to do research and communicate with other people at all in order to get better, all I’m saying is that the game should do a much better job at teaching the newbie a basic level of game understanding, so he doesn’t have to do it right away and can experiment for himself a while longer.

I also don’t buy into the whole “The game is so old already” stuff people keep dropping here, since MK9 came out at the same time.
Given MK is a garbage game from a competitive standpoint, it does a great job at explaining you the game and that’s all I really ask for.

With all the paid patches and “upgrades” SF4 has received, it’s pretty damn shameless by Capcom to still not include tutorials, fix a lot of the bugs that are still present in the game and use a better netcode.
All they do with every upgrade is sell you more useless shit.
I guess we can be happy though, that unblockables get patched out this time around.

All the people who told me that I want everything on a silver platter:
Go fuck yourself please and learn reading comprehension, I love the game and its difficulty, I just think it’s hard to get people into it that haven’t played a fighter in their lives, since it leaves you in a void of missing information.

Also like someone mentioned above me:

1-frame links are the dumbest garbage ever introduced to a SF game.
Like honestly why is it that I can do combos more easily in older SF versions and in this one I have to abuse a bug in the game engine called priority-linking in order to constantly pull them off?
I mean plinking was obviously not a conscious design decision, so who in the fuck came up with the idea to have such a retarded timing on certain combos?

I disagree on the part though where he complains about links in general, it’s just 1-frames I think are retarded.
I like the idea of having a system in the game that doesn’t rely on mashing and rather on rhythm.
It adds a depth to the game, straight mashers are lacking and teaches you to keep your calm under pressure.

I’m not gonna comment on crouch teching other than I think it’s retarded since throwing is supposed to counter blocking, since I’m not good enough at the game to tell how hard/easy the crouch tech option select is to blow up at a high level.

I got by with normals and dash punch with Balrog my first year, I only needed crLP rekka for my second year, third year my honda crLP hhs was sufficient and now I style with Gen.

My point is there are brain dead easy characters to use at beginner and intermediate level, even ibuki u just need to know how to slide throw kunai target combo into neck breaker. So why do u complain. U can even style with blanka with roll hop throw and shock mashing on the lower end of the skill tree

The timings on the combos were probably not intentional on some characters but yeah it is stupid to have 1 frame links especially for characters like rose and vega who already have a hard enough time in this game. There are a few things they could do with this game that would be helpful. The first thing is to make ultra’s not be able to kill your opponent. It should only be allowed to level the field but not make a complete comeback. To me its not fair to lose 400+ life off a minor mistake.

The dlc thing is really sad. I think at this point since it is a different game and not just version 50 billion. They should at least make trials for the 9 characters added from AE until now, redo some of the old trials, make the hud look fresh and the character select look newer too. In my opinion I think it should be the last DLC we get. If some characters are bad they’re bad looks at T.hawk and keep moving on from there.

Maybe teaching basics in doing moves and playing smart, but thats about all they can do for you. Everything else which is discovered with time can’t truly be explained in a tut. Blazblue has a good tut, but most people i know that go through it don’t want to do it/ still has difficulty understanding it.

But if this and 1f links are all you are talking about, how exactly can ultra not change that?

Yeah u have the stupid 1 frame links, and the stupid giant reversal window, so when u r getting hit by a combo just keep mashing ultra. Oh u dropped ur 1 frame link…I win! I agree it may not be intentional (the 1 frame links I mean), but it sux nonetheless. Sure u can get buy with some characters (not with Rose), but I would like to here how 1 frame links which u have to plink are a good thing.

Because it would actually cost them a bit of money and at this stage of Capcoms fall from grace, I doubt that they’d do anything in order to actually enhance you gaming experience.
All they want is your money for a couple of stages and carbon copy characters from SFxT.

All I see from them in the last 5 years is selling you the least amount of work and dedication for the highest possible price.

They need to do something to pump this game up. They’re dying at the moment.

…they could fix the netcode so that some of you can actually play the game for the first time. That would be something new…

I don’t understand why people think the netcode is so good… I mean I get more matches in the original MvC3 than I do in sf4…
