SSF4 Guile Match-up Thread: Typhoon < Sonic Boom < Vortex

Please tell me what to do here besides pick up Honda…

If she gets in once, it’s round over. I can’t walk backwards to escape at all. Cammy will just focus attack which locks me in place, then dash forward and do cr. mk spiral arrow and I’m done. No matter what you guys say, I’ll probably pick up Honda to counter her. I must of lost to this guy 20 times straight today. I can’t take it anymore. I even lose to Cammy’s that are no where near as good as this guy. That online tournament they ran in Japan that Sako won has been the worse thing that has happened to me since I started playing this game.

Not that I think I would’ve done much better but…

 1. Block low more against Cammy - you got hit by low combos into spiral arrow a few times when I thought you could’ve easily blocked.

 2. Jump in less - you weren’t punished for doing so really because you just managed to block her focus attack each time but it just seems like you put yourself into her prime range when you could’ve stayed away from her instead.

 3. Missed 1 big punish chance with her whiffed cannon spike on the right side of the screen while you had down charge (you did forward throw instead)

I always get totally owned by otg cannon strike pressure myself. I don’t think you got molested to the point of needing to switch to Honda or something though…

You didn’t see the other matches… 20 straight losses is good reason to try something else. I know I missed a few punishes. That’s not what I am worried about. It’s really, how do I do damage to her and how do I get out of her Vortex. Guile can’t get out of Vortex period no matter what character it is and it is really frustrating. I still want to learn what to do with Guile, but I need to pick up Honda or another character that has a way of getting out of Vortex. I can’t walk backwards and Guile back dash is terrible. That only leaves me with one way to get away which is jumping back which can easily be beaten. I’m truely baffled as to what I am suppose to do here.

I think Guy is only really dangerous if he manages to force his opponent into the corner and keep him there cos he’s got a lot of crazy damage and stun combos in the corner. If he manages to guess your SB and he does the ex elbow bang move, you’ll get juggled. Which is the same reason why I think airthrowing him is good cos it allows Guile to control the positioning during the match and it also tells the opponent you have air superiority. This shuts down one of his best setups(bushin flip) to get in and once that sets in his mind, I would say the match is 80% won cos Guile’s SB and footsies owns him in the ground game unless he manages to get in on you less than c.mk range.

But it’s easier said than done against a good Guy. Hahaha…

for starters, don’t focus so much on how many times you’ve lost; instead, look at it as a learning experience. I have a friend online I play with who mains Abel and he’ll let me play him in dozens of matches and usually kick the crap outta me. I don’t do it because I enjoy losing, but because it’s the only way I’m gonna learn. Attitude counts.

As for your specific match, I’m a bit perplexed why you were so eager to get in her face in some instances. When people say “lame Guile to win” I just consider it “play to Guile’s strengths.” Rushdown certainly isn’t one of them. As for the focus attack lock in, FAD backwards works, as does jumping. Both depend on distance though naturally

i could be wrong…but tonight i found out that guy is pretty much fucked if guile gets him in the corner and he’s got no meter. i was reading my opponent really well and he just couldn’t get out.

I think a main similiarity between Guy and Guile is that they both can keep good pressure if the opponent is in the corner and both also has a hard time trying to get out of the corner. If you whiff certain attacks, he can use d.hk to slide you and he has to guess using the ex elbow bang/tatsu or a flip to punish SB. Normally, it’s a block situation till they have a bar or try to use footsies to slowly try to push you out or those stupid ones would try to jump out just to punched back to where they were.

However, I’ve seen a Guy trapped in the corner by Sagat got out by walking forward, c.mp > hp bushin flip to the other side and the Sagat just sat there and watched him flew over his head. I think this can be punished by a jb airthrow/normal attack. But the opponent certainly won’t expect this if you don’t abuse it.

That seems to be pretty much the case. But if the situation gets reversed Guy is very dangerous. I find myself liking the middle of the stage vs. Guy, but maybe I am just too worried about his corner pressure.

Guys will use the flip then elbow and C HP will lose almost all the time.

If you see this, Lvl 2 FA and backdash and then use Ultra 2 if you have it. or dash in and combo him on crumple.

I agree with the dictator stuff, randomness from him can potentially cause problems but I think it is 6-4 in guilesregardless of what others think. the matchup with dictator is broken into 2 parts (not sure if this has been mentioned already)

 1. If guile has space to work with while throwing out fireballs he has the clear advantage until Dictator has Ultra 2 loaded which at this time you need to not get predictatble.

 2. if dictator scores that vital knockdown, the match tilts in his favour as his footsies and up close game is superior than Guiles. Guile does have ways to get out so decision making and anticipation is needed.

These two points make me believe that the matchup is very winnable for both characters. It really depends on whether guile stays on his feet or gets knocked over.

Chun Li/Akuma newbie interest in having some sets in with very good guile players. I am having trouble playing against guile so whenever anyone has the time just gimme a mssg tomorrow evening please. Thank you.

I am having trouble with good balrogs. They like to sit just in their sweep range and I can’t keep him out. He does very few dash punches and just sit on his db charge playing footsies. I read the first page but the rog I played doesn’t jump.

Make him jump! Throw enough booms and they always jump eventually.

If they are sitting just at their max sweep range, just take 2 steps back and SB. Not many Boxers can effectively headbutt/ex dash punch you at that range.

I’ve recently played a Fei long that plays like a boxer. He’d camp just out side my c.mk range, He FADC bait all the time and I can’t think of a good strategy fagainst it. All my pokes are PADC punishable and he react jump to SB. I can’t find his weakness.

Also, his dash punch is safe on block so he gets to get in for free.

Perhaps this video will help. this guile is playing against Mago’s Fei Long

On a separate note I will be at BAM ( Battle Arena Melbourne) for the SSF4 tournament on Saturday during the day…wish me luck!!

Good luck Hoppa! Bring back videos!

I am having a lot of trouble against Adon. any good advice? his cross up game hurts too much and they can easily avoid sonic booms.

People can record casuals, but from my understanding if I make it as far as the Quarter finals, matches are recorded by the guy in charge. I’ll do my best to avoid stage fright like at last years BAM.

@ Monsterer - Mix up SB speeds and mix up timing is one of the main ways to stop Adon from Jaguar kicking you on reaction to SB’s. Watch for the EX ones as it is an overhead.

when blocking cross ups, watch fors option selects like tick throw, Rising jaguar > FADC etc.

Whiffed Jaguar Kicks can be punished with S HP or Backfist, and the opportunity usually arises when Adon does the Jaguar kicks after you throw out an SB provided you have correct spacing. With Adon’s relatively low health, landing a few meaty hits can really hurt him.

I think the idea is not to be too defensive which means you not to combine SB pressure with pokes. not an easy matchup by any means

I’ll be going to the same event. Hopefully I’ll see you around. Theres also going to be a livestream at BAM2010 on USTREAM: That’s right, Melbourne’s biggest fighting game tournament is back and better than ever, we’ve stepped it up this year and have an even…

So, yeah, BAM will have at least 2 SRK Guiles.
