SSF4 Guile Match-up Thread: Typhoon < Sonic Boom < Vortex

cool, i’ll be there around lunchtime and try to squeeze in some casual sets…it should be a good one and then drop a bundle on the blackjack tables later on :stuck_out_tongue:

Urgh I’m trying to get my head around this Guile mirror match.

Most people I play I find I can out SB them quite easily, I’m decent with charge times. However, its everything else that is getting to me. I’ve always been quite rubbish at mirror matches, but this one is especially frustrating because I feel like I know Guile and all his options…I just don’t know how to fight them as Guile.

What am I trying to acomplish with this match? Having the MOST SONIC BOOMS ™ doesn’t seem to be doing the trick, and its such a silly, brute force method. When fighting another Guile, should I be focused on getting him into a corner, aiming for a knockdown? Sitting back and ultra turtle? I just don’t know.

You should keep away from a guile ,honestly who ever turtles best, will win. I will recommend going to watch the videos I posted against Aeroplane_ in the video return of glory section. We go 50-50 so dont think I beat him always, those are just some of the replays I was able to beat him and land an UDK crumple.

I would say that I do jump more than him to try to connect a combo, but trust me, if you can get a guile by jumping while he is in sonic boom animation, you should take close to 40% of his life with j.hk>s.hp>boom>backfist. Every sonic boom chip counts in this match, once one guile is 100 health behind, he needs to take serious risks.

Ok. So I went ahead and posted my list of Ultra punishes here. If you want to move it, delete it, copy it somewhere else, feel free. It’s not complete, but if I start filling in more of these, I will make sure to post up any new info I can find. Most of the ???'s are from moves that are overheads. So they take more trial and error to determine if they are still punishable with Ultra 1. There’s probably some confusing notes to myself in there as well… Anyhow, hope it helps.

An Update from BAM. I was in Pool A and just missed out on a top 8 finish out of at least 70+ people who were in the same pool. I ended up in 9th place and i lost to a Blanka player 2-1 after I won the first match. 3-4 of my matches were on the USTREAM which should be available in the next few days. I still need to work on big punishes as many times I failed to make my opponent pay for mistakes made, which was caused by actual and perceived pressure.

My matches that will be available are:

  1. Me Vs Ken - Won 2-1

  2. Me Vs Sagat - I was unfortunate that my button settings got stuffed and i didnt perform up to where i should be and got sent to the losers bracket after getting to the 4th round. Although I did quite well considering

  3. Me VS Sagat/Ryu - same guy i played and I met him in the quarter finals and this time i got some payback and playing for a spot in the top 8

  4. Me VS Blanka - lost 2-1 and finished in 9th place in my pool

I really should have done better wven though i exceeded my own expectations

Nice job Hoppa! Blanka used to give me a whole hell of a lot of problems back in the day. You have to be pretty vigilant with your reactions… flashkicking balls on reaction, AA’ing his quick jumps consistently, etc. while not getting tagged by slides and hop shenanegins. I’ve heard a lot of talk from Blanka players that the Guile match is hard because “Guile can just sit on down-back all day.” Never really tried that too much personally.

In Guile mirrors, a little offense can be a good thing. At high levels of play, you will find players trying to exploit Guile’s AA holes using empty jumps close up, jumps at weird ranges with high-priority jump-in attacks, jumps slightly farther away, empty jumps slightly farther away, etc. The nice thing is, is that Guile has these options too. C.hp can stuff j.lp from a “normal” jump range, but if it’s done from a little farther out, j.lp can stuff a lot of AA’s. Mixing that up with empty jumps and the rare focus dash through a boom. Also remember that on knockdown, you get a free crossup which can lead into a combo, throw, frame trap mixup, etc. Use knockdown to your advantage every time.

Jimmy, nice list, but some of the info you got is inaccurate. For example, I know that Juri’s LK pinwheel, Zangief’s non-EX greenhands, Dhalsim’s lk and mk slides, and Fei’s initial Rekka’s are definately not ultra punishable just to name a few. How did you get this info?

The Blanka Player I played knew the match up quite well and didnt do horizontal balls when i had a down charge and started using ground based pokes outside Guiles C MK and S HP range. This what got me flustered but i did manage to crouch tech a lot after say a hop then throw, which is tool some of the Blanka Players use. To add to that, he was waiting for a LP sonic boom so he can slide on reaction which is why i was previous afraid to throw them out.

the EX up ball where he lands in front of you then throw or electricity ( as opposed to cross up) is what i fell for a number of times as I ended trying to Lvl 2 FA instead of doing an Ultra on reaction.

throughout the initial rounds I played 3 hondas, 2 Dictators which helped my cause as I even beat Melbourne’s top dictator player who I lamed out and won by a bigger margin than I expected (I respected his rushdown game which i suprisingly nullified). What I found astonishing is that everytime he went for a headstop after I throw out a LP Sonic Boom, C HP beat it clean everytime when done relatively early, which saved me the risk of trying an air throw or J MP and eating a Devils reverse.

Overall I still think that I should have achieved more

Hey Slinkun, so I went back into training room after looking at the frame data for those moves and i think I figured out where my inaccuracies are:

Fei’s HP and EX Rekkas (1st hit) are safe from max range. So you’re totally correct on that! I forgot to specify which range I was punishing them from. They seemed completely punishable with Ultra 1 from the rekkas’ close to mid range tho.

Dhalsim’s slides are the same way, Ultra 1 punishable from close to mid range. Although it’s extremely hard to reversal Ultra 1 his LK slide, it’s possible. So I included in the list.:bgrin:

Zangief’s non-EX greenhands seemed punishable, with Ultra 1, at any range I tried. Frame data says they are -7, -8 and -9 on block. So it seems like they should be perfectly punishable.

Juri’s LK Pinwheel kick was kind of strange. I looked over the frame data, and it’s supposed to be +4 on block. But after a quick test in the training room, I was able to reversal Ultra 1 it from close to mid/far range. I didn’t test max range tho because it didn’t look like it would work. But maybe I’m wrong. I think either the frame data is wrong for her, or it’s different if you crouch block her pinwheels. It seemed to work, tho it’s pretty improbable to react that fast.

Anyways, hopefully there’s no error in the way I’m testing these. If so, sorry for spreading any info that might be misleading. And sorry for not labeling the distances on those situations. There’s just too many characters and situations to test for this kind of thing. If you find any more, I’ll be sure to re-test them.

You’re too harsh on yourself. You played extremely well. You’ve definately given me something to aim for as a Guile player. There were some really good players there, and you were as close as possible to top 8. You played solid, took intellegent chances, and did pretty damn good.

As for me? Well…I did okay. In singles I got taken out by a Cammy and a Ryu. In teams I got taken out by a…Cammy and a Ryu. Fuck. Honestly, I have a long, long way to go before I can even think about calling myself a “good” Guile.

You may want to make sure that you are holding down-back for a long enough amount of time while recording your dummy. Other people have made this mistake too. When you activate your Ultra, the timer still ticks during the cinematic, meaning that if you did sim’s df.lk, then held down-back for 1 second, then hit playback… he would probably not be blocking it anymore. When I normally check for reversal potential, I do move “x” then hold down-back for about 4-5 seconds.

I’m pretty sure that this is the case for Juri’s lk pinwheel. It should be -4 on block, flashkick punishable, not ultra punishable.

From What I saw you did reasonably well. Against Cammy, if you get knocked over chances are that she will cross up, and then do the Cannon spike shenanigans which can cause many problems although her mixups are no where near as bad as Akuma. Its unfortunate you came up against a sim player who lamed out the match.

Playing in front of 100+ people on the USTREAM, I was a bit nervous but decided to block out everything as if I was playing casuals so it is definitely good to see what I was really made of when you have 100 sets of eyes observing your movements. A few players said to after that I missed out on big damage opportunities but at least they were good enough to point that out to me :stuck_out_tongue:

I think you have me confused with someone else. I played Naruga’s Cammy on the big screen (my player name is Kyle, and the screen kind of destroyed itself during my match), and I didn’t play a Sim. At the next Ranbat’s I’ll come and introduce myself to you. I was going to come play some casuals with you, but I went to Subway instead <_<

To get BACK ON TOPIC~! Can someone explain to me how Cammy’s TK cannon spike works? I got destoryed by it all weekends. Does it ever cross up or hit as an overhead, or can you just down back it? The Cammy’s I played said most characters have an option select they can do with crouch tech to combat it, does Guile have anything like that?

Thanks.

I think the key to playing Guile mirror matches is to condition him into throw booms at poke-mid range, then try jumping in before he SBs to score a combo while preventing him from doing the same to you. But you cannot jump-in too much when you think he’s gonna SB cos then he’ll know you like to jump. The important part is that you have to jump in at the right time after the conditioning part, not at the start and not towards the end of the clock cos these are the times when players are more cautious.

Whoever charges faster and whoever has a better grasp of EX boom and b.lk is also very important at full screen. FA dash forward > throw is also a very good tool against Guile’s s.hk and s.hp cos it scores a knockdown. FA pokes and not booms. Turtle when you have a good life lead and you’ll win the match. Walking forward and c.mk will trade with Guile’s SB. S.hp is quite a good AA sometimes if you can space it right. If you blocked an opponent’s crossup ending with c.mp > SB, FK the SB cos most likely it’ll be a jab boom and so it’s not a tight blockstring but don’t do it often. Don’t try to crumple jump-ins with FA as any character can just throw you out of it.

Hey Slinkun, yeah I made sure to avoid the whole recording for ten seconds feature. So I used Guile as the recorded dummy and blocked manually on my side. But to double check it, I tested it without the record feature and used two controllers and I could still punish Juri’s LK.Pinwheel. So I did some digging and I came across this in the Juri forums:

Seems like a handy piece of info to have on hand against pinwheel happy Juris. :karate:

i secondary juri to a pretty good level and i feel guile wipes the floor with her. i thought she would be a good counter pick against dhalsim and i got proved wrong on that one too.

had a bad last couple of days with guile to be honest loi. got terrorised by a great adon, who then proceeded to message me to rub it in that he beat me and how he hates guile. nice guy. then i got smoked by a fei long because i was too flash kick happy. i think i need to work on these two matches, though i think the fei long defeat was down to playing too much and fatigue.

Next CW, (hopefully i’ll be able to make it) we’ll have some casuals even though we didnt get a chance during the BAM Tournament. But I was happy to hear that you got something out of my gameplay during my push towards the top 8.

For Cammys Cannon spike, i don’t think it crosses up and its not an overhead either nor is it armour breaking. Naruga’s cammy and other cammy’s I have played will go into a block string > Tick throw or do a quick jump into Cannon spike on the expectation that you will stick out a poke and then commence another block string. If the cannon spike hit confirms a big combo is coming up. If cammy does a cannon spike and she is directly above your head, she will end up behind you so you need to block the other way to ensure she can’t hit confirm anything after.

On block, Cammy’s OS are tick throw, walk up throw or block strings which can sometimes involve frame traps. You just have to watch what you opponent is doing and act accordingly. I found that crouch teching has been effective to combat it and when I do I occasionally slip in a C LK or C LP if a throw attempt is made otherwise I end up teching my opponent. If you know you have stored a Flash kick charge you can use it as a “get the fuck off me” move and FADC it.

Hope this answers your question

the adon match is one of my worst too.

Played a couple matches against Blanka and found out a few things. (Hopefully isnt well known)

When Blanka does Horizontal Ball, Any flash kick on reaction that isnt EX will result in free trade ultra.

Also, whenever you see the LP Horizontal Ball, the D,U + (lp + lk) option select works wonders. Techs if they go for a grab, FK if they try anything else. Only make sure you dont overuse this because if they catch on, they might just block and punish. FADC is recommended, so use it loosely if you have to the two bars to do so.

I dont usually fk blanka horizontal’s ball, I c.jab or c.mp. I guess I should start implementing these two things more often, damage wise is worth it.

To the good old Guy problem I was having earlier, I seemed to have find one possible solution: cs.hk (i.e. the goofy heel kick).

I tried this when he tried to close the gap with his elbow shenanigans. Of course, it won’t work when the elbow is already on top of you (i.e. wakeup), but if you see it coming, cs.hk is a good option (along with air throw)…

Anyone have similar thoughts?
