SSF4 Guile Match-up Thread: Typhoon < Sonic Boom < Vortex

Since I also have bizarre levels of difficulty with Bison ill chime in with an observation that is pretty derp but i never considered before.

After reading Pakmans post about thinking you’re far enough away but actually being too close, I fought a Bison that constantly walked forward and eventually got in quickly even while I kept booming.

I realized that i was constantly throwing lp boom and the speed that it the boom travels puts little pressure on Bisons advance. I then started throwing HP and MP boom to compensate for the further optimal distance and it seemed to create a much better zoning bubble. Sounds stupidly simple I guess but it’s something I never really considered…

I feel that if Bison is successfully hitting you with EX Scissor Kick after you throw lp sonic booms then you’re being predictable with the booms. Try feinting more so they have to guess.

Has anyone gotten a decent amount of experience against Decapre? Her teleport mix up is giving me a lot of trouble. It sees when you footsie they throw out pyscho stingbor teleport up at weird angles. I’m still working on how to approach the MU.

I’m still learning this matchup as well, but I have found out the hard way not to throw booms up close to a waking Decapre with U2 stocked… lol.

Okay folks, I need serious help with the Guy matchup… I can’t beat him for sh*t. lol… I’ll try getting a video up, but for now, my perceptions of the match are:

  1. I don’t feel safe at any range aside from absolutely full screen. It seems like he has a tool for every position on the map, and no matter what I try, I can’t keep him out; I feel like I’m not telegraphing booms, but then all of a sudden I’m knocked down by a full screen EX slide out of nowhere
  2. His fake slides are a complete mindf*ck for me and I don’t know what to do in reaction to them, because…
  3. Every button I press seems to get beat by or trade with every normal he has, and the minute he connects with anything, big combo, massive damage, and Guile is cornered
  4. Also related to point 3, it seems like Guy’s lp’s and lk’s have huge range, like one full training stage square at least? All I know is I get tapped by one, and I’m getting hammered right after.
  5. His bushin flip grab feels like it works on crouchers. Maybe I’m hallucinating or something, but it happens so fast that it feels like I got grabbed while crouching. I’m probably twitching or something though… =P

Any help greatly appreciated! Seriously, when I come across a Guy matchup in ranked, I’m already subconsciously putting my stick down. haha

Guy is by far my worst matchup too, along with Ibuki. I play CCG Air Guy frequently and can’t even touch him, I only do well when I’m not scared to throw booms even though Guy can punish any boom easily from basically anywhere. The worst part is that my secondary Blanka gets absolutely destroyed by Guy as well. I’ve nearly started walking away with a DQ in tournaments vs him.

Anyone knew Guile could punish Dudley’s light MGB with LK super ? I saw Dieminion do it on Smug not too long ago.
Happens around 1:40

I feel like auto-correct Flashkick works really well against Decapre. Either that or almost all Decapres are really bad at guessing.

Poison Vs Guile is definitely in Guile’s favor. I’d actually say it’s 6-4. As long as your charging is on point, there’s very little Poison can do to get in on Guile.

I dunno man… the reverse is also true… except Poison has better pressure and a better EX fireball. I lost in tournament to a turtle style Poison that just throws endless fireballs and backdashes when I approach. It felt like fighting zoning Gouken except even more evasive.

I played casuals against Chris Hu’s Poison at Next Level last night and I was pretty much beating him in the fireball war. There were points where I’d just backhand him a good number of times after he threw a fireball. I also played DaFeetLee’s Poison and completely cornered him using the same tactic.

EDIT: Once I cornered Poison, it was pretty much over for her. I stayed just far enough to where she couldn’t jump in at all without being anti aired backhand/far st.hp nor was she able to do her flip kick command throw without getting punished. To top it off, I kept the sonic boom pressure on her the entire time.

I think this is a case of playstyles. Ie, Nuckledu can bop Infilitrations Gouken but Dieminion can’t even touch it. Personally I think Poison trumps a “normal” Guile, I counterpick it blanka though so it makes no difference to me.

Hi, I’m having trouble against two new characters: Rolento and Elena. Any tips on playing against them?

Rolento: I have difficulty in punishing his jumping pogo and the back roll to air baton attack mixups. It seems because I can’t punish it, even thou I can block the mixups my opponent could simply continue the pressure. Any tips on countering those moves?

Elena: I definitely have no clue on handling this matchup since there seems to be no range where Guile has advantage. Fullscreen - cant SB else Elena just focus absorb it. Midscreen - difficult to react and counter her overheads, guile’s midscreen reaching pokes are slower (c.mk) and far hp can be ducked under. I have no idea what to do… :frowning:

I’ve been playing Poison recently and she is definitely a better zoning character than Guile. In fact, I think she’s just 1 tier below Yun.

Her fb game is definitely better than Guile and can even juggle to U1 if u land on it.
Much better backdash better than Guile.
Doesn’t need charge.
Cancellable c.mk and c.hp.
Better range on c.hp horizontally but lesser active frames and bigger hurtbox.
Got rekkas.
Got a special that enables her to move forward and pressure. Comboable and armor breaking as well.
Better air to air with j.hk. It’s better than airthrow in most situations.
Better red FA combo dmg.
Comboable overhead.
Easier combo into U1 than Guile.

It’s really unfair to Guile that Capcom made such a character and leaves Guile SF2-ish.

As far matchups go, Abel has a clear advantage and can Bully Guile with gimmicks once he gets that knockdown. for example, fake cross up, rolls and mixups, command grabs etc. I dunno about you guys but i feel that with online play not being the best due to lag etc, Abel can get away with a lot of things online but not offline. I have an easier time playing Abel players offline than the online ones

After using rose extensively and using her as a second main character, I feel as though Guile cannot win this match up because she can build her metre so quickly and forces guile to play a rushdown game which ain’t his style. Also her combos take off absurd damage and her backdash means that she can escape most of Guiles OS with minimal effort

you could air grab his pogo if you do early enough since there is a slight gap between the time he does the pogo and a follow up. Standing Fierce can get him if you see it early. His rolling attack is very punishable so you can either flash kick him during the animation or sweep him if he does say the light kick version. if you block low you can tag him with a flash kick provided you do it straight away. I’m not sure if you can punish EX roll with Flash kick though after blocking it.

Elena has a wierd ass hitbox. I’m still trying to learn this matchup

Hi, thanks for the inputs! Gonna try the airthrow and s.fierce!

For the roll attack, I meant the one where Rolento does a backroll then follow it up with an overhead baton attack (i think it’s called Air Raid?). Are there any option after Guile block the overhead, because it seems that my opp can continue his pressure on block? Or are there any good buttons to interrupt the Air Raid startup?

He’s positive on block so u can’t interrupt him if u block it.
The ex one is punishable tho, don’t know how negative but I think he’s -4 or something.

Sorry i didnt read you post properly lol. for the air raid attack i think the normal versions are safe but the Ex version is unsafe given that it leaves him at -10 according to the frame data (correct me if this is wrong). The Standing fierce punish applies if rolento does the pogo in front of you to set up a follow up.

Here is a link to one of my matches against a rolento player during a tournament in my local area, which i ended up losing. I made a number of blunders against the pogo tactics but I did manage to counter them on occasions
