SSF4 Guile Match-up Thread: Typhoon < Sonic Boom < Vortex

Sup, fellow Guile players. Haven’t been in the Guile forums for awhile.

Anyway, played a good amount tonight and got owned a good bit, too.

My main issue here is how free I’m starting to be in some of these match-up’s. Could’ve just been a bad night, but I’m starting to think otherwise. First, I really can’t seem to figure Sim out. At all. Usually when he’s near me, I don’t use any SB’s because I know a slide is coming–but whenever I seem to crouch to defend it, he seems to instantly do a jumpback HP and it’s really annoying, as I can’t seem to stand quick enough to defend against it. Jumping in results in me either being kneed away or swatted, and his normals just…seem to always beat my normals out. I hate this match-up.

Another one who’s destroying me is Ibuki. I dunno. It’ll seem like I’m actually fighting her well…until I get knocked on my ass–then the entire battle seems to shift in her favor. Kunai cross-up that I still can’t fucking block, then all of that vortex shit we all know about. Makes me feel so helpless. Those are the two characters who I’ve had the most difficulty with, but there’s more. Fei-Long, Yun, Yang, Sakura (Don’t laugh), Sagat, and Akuma also give me problems–so I’m not sure what to say about them other than that. Wish I could show you guys direct footage of my fuck-up’s, but can’t right now. Working on that.

So, is there any particular approach you guys have to the Sim, Ibuki match-up’s?

For the Sim match, why’re you close to him and no the one creating offence? If you’re losing to aggressive Sims that’s just not right. The only thing to do with the instant overheads is to be looking for them at anytime. I like to stay away from Sim as much as possible in this match, even though you can’t really win the fireball war anymore, just look to see if you can tag him with an EX Boom and take the life lead, your main goal is to have him come to you, which is never a good tactic for Sim, if he tries to teleport to you, just knock him with a crouch fierce or a flash kick if you have charge, and then back up from him. And Ibuki is just a hell of a match, after that knockdown if you don’t make a correct guess you’ll be stunned or dead soon, the only thing I can really say is space your booms carefully and watch out for an EX Slide because that thing is fast. That’s really all a Guile player can do against an Ibuki IMO.

Well, the only time I’m really fighting Sim up close is when he uses EX Yoga Flame and teleports to get near me. Sometimes I can successfully use a st.HP or cr.HP on reaction, but he still gets me with the teleport cross-up more times than not. Most of the time, the battle does take place with Sim being the one across the screen.

One positive I’ve been able to take out of this is being able to react and punish his st.HP with the U2, since they like to use Yoga Flame, slide, then st.HP to stuff Guile’s SB attempt, but usually that just makes them play even more defensively. Usually when I get a knockdown on him, I try to go for an overhead, but he’ll backdash, possibly slide and then throw me, which, even while I can see it coming, can’t seem to tech it. If he doesn’t slide, he’ll usually teleport far away and keep me away.

My approach is all wrong. Instead of laming him out, I’m usually trying to take the fight to him; especially when he gets a lead. I’d probably be better off just staying on the ground and jumping at him. Heh…I pretty much figured the Ibuki match needs Guile to avoid being knocked down at all costs. I usually try my hardest to lame her out, but she still catches up to me. Thanks for the help, skaterz.

For this one, try OS target combo > backfist.

can’t help much since Sim also my bad MU. Others are Bison (lol), Balrog (lol), Blanka (hate it so damn much on wakeup pressure).

Yet to fight offensive Ibuki.

Thanks, lanun. Those match-ups you’ve mentioned are also kinda tough for me, too. Not my worse ones, but definitely not favorable.

Beginning to find other tough match-ups now. One being Dudley. My cr.HP consistently got stuffed by his stupid j.HP, and I had no answer for his dash. My success with this match-up has been inconsistent; some I win, some I lose. I’ll likely need to fight him a lot more before I can get a good feel for it.

The other is Adon. His cross-ups absolutely destroy me, and usually when he gets in close, his pressure game puts me in a bad position. His normals are really good–and I don’t know how to deal with his Jaguar Kick. Seems like once he gets you in the corner, the fight gets much tougher.

And lastly, the Giefster. Never had much of an issue with him in Super, but in AE, Gief is giving me a ton of trouble. Usually when I’m crouching, he SPD’s me when it looks like he’s a bit far from me. Dat range is amazing. I have no idea when to throw a SB at him, since his EX Green Hand usually gets me good. They’ll do the occasional jump in, and usually that pushes me into the corner even more–and more times than not, my cr.HP is stuff by his j.HP or j.MK. This is another battles that seems like it’s over once he fully backs you up.

Perhaps I need to utilize Guile’s other AA options. I’ve relied on cr.HP too often.

It feels like all the previously tough matchups got tougher and the easier ones got a little harder. The twins are ridiculous, the block strings after dive kicks don’t allow you to do anything, well me anyway. I’m pretty free, but learning.

what do you guys think about the bison and balrog matches these days?

also…i think guile loses to makoto now :frowning:

Yun is definetly the harder of the twins, he has frame advantage on most of his moves and all the combos start from c.lp or s.lp not very hard to catch someone is it? Yang is slightly easier but its near impossible to win any of those matches.

Balrog(boxer) match up isn’t too bad, i’ve played a few and im doing well against them, Vega (claw) has become much harder you zone them out all fight and they get you with 1 combo and a jumping H.p which stuns you :frowning:

Any ideas on how to beat Deejay now? not winning sonic boom wars and his trades seem to hit much harder. Even harder to jump in at him, in ssf4 I was late throwing deejay’s “flashkick” but I can’t seem to do it anymore.

Hmmm…for those two, I’ve had either lopsided battles or very good battles. I’ve fought way more Bison’s than Boxer’s, tho, so I’m still not sure about the match-ups there. Bison just seems to give me way more trouble in AE than he did in Super, and I have no idea why.

Interesting about Makoto. I’ve only fought about 3 of them with Guile. To be honest, I barely won most of those battles; even got dominated in a few rounds once they got in on me. I think Guile is okay if he can turtle to the max against Makoto, but if there’s even a slight chance she gets in, it won’t be so pretty. She definitely scares me. How’s your overall experience with fighting Makoto?

And I hate fighting Dee-Jay now. I really do.

Dear All, any solution Vs GUY? I have no idea to all his standard combos…

is there a good anti air against Guy elbow drop? I get into so much bullshit by them. nothing seems to even trade against his elbow drop

and dieminion winning at ECT3…(well, if you ignore wolfkrone, but thats not just purely about the c.viper matchup, wolfkrone is just a beast of a player)

guile is still winning tourneys in AE. why?how? are the nerfs not so bad when taken in the context of the whole game? or have people not figured out how to play their new mains so they haven’t been taking advantage of how weak guile is now?

other theories?

Hi guys, do you have problem with against Ryu ?
im in the rank Match with Guile, iam average with 2000 pp but lost match to Ryu, its looks scrub or noob have 100 pp but play like Ryu with 3000 PP, he is very offensive, and like Mini daigo, always give pressure with cr mp,cr mk hadoken, and when i sonic boom he tatsu and throw me so often.

How to beat Ryu especially good Ryu who can SRK FADC metsu so easily.

Yeah i hate fight against Ryu too, he is like Krypton to Guile.
one thing so sure never Jump on Ryu, he has many AA option.
He can SRK LP and Metsu.

and dont throw sonic boom so much
Tatsu have property like Lariat Zangief can go through projectile.
about Ryu pressure like Cr mk Hadoken still mystery about to escape LoL.

Maybe Guile pro want to share their experience against Ryu

i pretty much lose to all the above average makoto’s now. no meter build from booms really hurts guile in this one imo.

dieminion has a godlike guile. people aren’t at the top level with the new characters yet.

any suggestions on how to fight against guy? I know dieminion uses him as secondary. so maybe a little input from him will greatly help me improve my game.

fuck fei long in this game. luckily i haven’t played one that actually knows what they’re doing yet, so i haven’t lost. but i can tell that match has got way worse for sure.

j.mp seems godlike. it beats cr.hp and flash kick clean from what i could tell. i think st.mp and mk might stuff it though.

Depends on distance, if hes above your head block it, the mix up isn’t too hard to figure out. If hes jumping from further away you can flash kick it, a bit closer just time your uppercut. Your probably doing it a bit late an early upper cut usually beats it if hes right in front of you.

I figured out a way to beat Deejay, played against a very good one and figured out how to block his mix up play and bazooka knee out of there when he tries a cross up. I also managed to light punch a EX rolling sobat kick, if you get a chance to knock him down you can pressure him with cr.lk still and cr.mp due to his high start up time on most of his specials. You can not jump at him at any cost not even over his air slasher unless you anticipate it, the recovery is really quick and he seems to dominate against Guile in the air. A standing straight also puts a lot of pressure on him and him jumping in isnt much of an issue unless hes in your face. EX rolling sobat kick can be flash kicked on block, normal rolling sobat kicks can be flash kicked on reaction. if a Deejay happens to do a EX Machine gun upper for no apparent reason in your face, keep blocking i did an EX flash kick once and got caught by ultra 2 straight afterwards. And U2 does a lot of damage…

At least Deejays sweep got nerfed:coffee:…

remember you can now throw deejay out of his sobat kicks, just like balrog’s rush punches and oni’s slash.
