SSF4 Guile General Discussion Thread

Just gonna paste this from the other thread:
Guile’s neutral game is worse in ultra due to the health nerf and the counter hit booms. Health nerf makes his worst matches against vortext/ToD types that much worse.

I don’t know what Cpcom saw in Arcade ultra to scare them this much but really doubt these nerfs were needed.

Eh. The c.mk buff is nice in the neutral game, and he got some stuff to make his up close game a little better too.

I feel Guile’s neutral game is still strong. His up close game is deadly.

i’m trying to get his dash cancel combos and I suck. I can’t even get it once. I don’t know what I am doing wrong. I don’t know if I’m double dashing or dashing to little but I can’t follow up a sonic boom FADC to cr LP in a combo. I’m gonna keep practicing ofcourse but I hope I’m practicing the correct way. Does anyone have any pointers?

fei long match seems a bit worse to me. i think it’s because of the health nerf and counter hit booms along with fei’s ultra now getting three hits. i think i played the set pretty shit too but i saw a couple of things that made me think this match is quite nasty. his focus attack whilst nerfed is still really annoying. i was getting hit with quite a few level one’s for throwing out st.hk.

On paper I think it’s supposed to be about the same if not slightly better… Isn’t any blocked rekka at any distance now punishable by Flash Kick? I think it’s -4 at best but maybe max range rekka causes FK to hit on a later frame. I remember getting cornered by Fei and then continually Rekka pressured because the reduced forward movement made him stay in the same spot so it felt less risky for him but I don’t think I tried a reverse FK. Maybe Red Focus is useful to bust through Rekka too since most Fei’s will continue to Rekka if they see the first get focus absorbed.

I had trouble with this for a while, too. This is how I ended up practicing and getting it… Throw a jab SB, immediately hit MP+MK as fast as you can, then tap forward one more time… if you time it right, the forward motion of the SB acts as the first tap in the dash, then when you tap forward one more time, that’s the 2nd tap and you will dash.

So the exact input would be

  1. forward + LP (SB)
  2. Continue holding forward + focus (focus starts)
  3. Hold focus + stick neutral (focus continues)
  4. Hold focus + forward tap (dash occurs)

I think the #1 key is to hit MP+MK as fast as you can after hitting the SB input.

i thought it was the second hit of rekka but maybe i’m thinking of the last version (ae). i’ll try that in training mode later. i really need to get a frame data app for my iPod but i’m not sure if they are accurate or not? red focus on delayed rekka is a nice idea i’ll try that.

Also for fei, it’s one of the few matches where i look to snipe his focus with U2. Normally that’s not something I look for, but I find it really useful to devote some focus too in the fei matchup. If he manages to backdash it, Guile is safe even from EX chicken wing.

Was Guile always able to connect Upside Down Kick off of CH Jump In Hard Kick? I thought he could only connect it off of CH Neutral Jump HP.

I landed a CH Jump in HK > Upside Down Kick > Close St.Hp combo on Guy the other night. I didn’t think would connect.

CH j.hk he can do UDK. Or he can do a normal nj.HP. Doesn’t need to be CH.

A few people I spoke to put guile in the top 8 in the tier rankings. He is strong but I dont feel he is top 8 somehow given that some match ups will give him trouble like the twins, Fei-long, Akuma.

Elena will definitely be a huge issue and I find Rufus to be a little more difficult now with all the changes

Just mash and hope for counterhits. Stun Guile and bam! He’s done.

Have bad matchups changed much? I know Elena (and Decapre?) is now added to the list.

imo none of the bad match ups got noticeably better for guile. the only matchup i felt was easier is sagat, but that’s not considered a bad one. now that i know you can flash kick any blocked rekka, that changes the fei match quite a bit, so that might be one but until i fight it again i can’t say. theres been so many versions that its hard to remember everything in your head lol. and rumours are there’s going to be a patch for this version too.

I feel the Decapre/Guile match up is in Guile’s favor. Did a study session with EMP Hiro and his Decapre at Next Level for about 2 hours. In the end, we both came to the conclusion that Decapre’s defense is on the weak end while her offense is a tad bit on the linear side. Most of Guile’s normals pretty much put a halt in any potential mix up that she kickstarts into.

I thought of a genuinely useful and meter conscious use for a red focus combo.

Against Chun’s hazanshu, much of the time a boom is still on the screen. So, when you punish with UDK, normally all you get is a s.hp (unless your godlike and can do the UDK > c.mp xx flashkick combo).

So, I would think this would be the most appropriate place to burn three bars.

(Chun hazanshu’s) UDK > s.hp xx red focus > UDK > s.hp xx boom.

Hmm I like the idea but I’m guessing st.hp will sometimes push her out of red focus out of range so you’d have to be good at recognizing how close she was when you hit? Ill have to try it later. I usually do UDK 2lp 2mp FK since I’m pretty bad at UDK 2mp FK.
