SSF4 Guile General Discussion Thread

You don’t notice the lag until you play on something that doesn’t have it.

It partly depends on if it is a composite or if it is component or hdmi that is being done in hd. Check the srk tech thread about input delay.

Easiest way to test how much lag your tv has is by putting in Guitar Hero 3. It has a setting in there that tells you how much lag you have. Quick, easy and straight to the point.

Ok, so im new to Guile. Since i’ve been playin Abel. But, im working on my Flash Kick -> FADC -> Sonic Hurricane. Well, for a while i kept fucking up cause i wasn’t sure exactly WHEN to FADC to get the Sonic Hurricane to hit. So i watched a video about it and started practicing…and i was getting it.

What happened next may not seem like anything to you guys, but i thought it was the coolest shit i’ve seen! I messed up my timing of the Hurricane, because i must have done it WHILE Ryu was over my head, cause im assuming you guys already know if you do it early, Guile will throw it throw it the wrong way. Well, i did the ultra motion, and as Guile is charging up his hurricane, he fucking turned around,(because im guessing Ryu was falling BEHIND me, cause i threw it early), he turned around before he threw it…and then threw the hurricane. At first i thought, the camera was fucking with me…but i kept looking and i was like “HO…LY…SHIT!”

Like i said, Im new to guile so to you guys, it might not seem like anything. But coming from a new guile player…i’ve NEVER seen that before and it just made my day.

If only it actually hit after the turn-around… then I could have the same amount of excitement as you. :frowning:

hi im a noob to charge characters, juz wanna ask how do you do a cancel from a normal to a special move eg. c.mp xx sb? may i know whats the exact input? Is it db.mp,f.p? I either cant get my sb out or its too late. Am i inputting the wrong stuff or im juz too slow? Nid help thx.

k Guile mains. Time to explain yourselves! You have been caught in the act!

this is what family men do? >:o

To cancel a move, you need to input the move that will cancel the normal one WHILE the normal one is hitting your opponent. So it’s charge down back + medium punch, then while it’s connecting, input the forward+punch. You need to be pretty fast.

Does anyone have any tips for when your Guile, and someone manages to knock you down, or starting rushing you down?

My defense is pretty good, but my main problem seems to be that when someone finally manages to get in on me, it’s like a a free half my HP, once they know me down or start crossing me up.

What can Guile do should you fail once a defense?

thats is guiles weakness. he has poor cross up defense and few wakeup options

When I’m getting rushed down, I just simply block and watch for possible tick throws - don’t press any buttons lol. I have been commended for my defense on multiple occasions, something that I gained from playing competent Roses, Vipers, or any other rush down characters.

Since Guile doesn’t have (good) wake up options, learning to block and tech is very important. In the end, it’s better to take a throw (~120, 130 dmg) than a meaty combo (200+ dmg). The point of rush down characters is that they want you to make a mistake and get a meaty combo in. Just play it patient and don’t get frazzled when they start pressuring you.

There’s also the FK XX fadc gtfo move, but… don’t rely on that too much.

In other news, I decided to see if I could do FK XX FABDC > U2… and I (somehow) got it down more consistently after not attempting it for several months LOL.

^Yeah, that’s about all you can really do once Guile’s knocked on his ass. Sometimes I actually feel like I’m going to win the battle going away, then once I get knocked down, it’s like the battle is over. I know cross-up’s are Guile’s weakness, but in particular, Ibuki’s cross-up’s destroy me before I have a chance to even do anything. Oh, well. Just gotta continue improving my teching and overall defense.

A question: can someone help me with Sonic Boom partitioning? I often do well in fireball wars, but then I lose out after a drawn out battle. Guess I’m doing it wrong.

Sit in the training room for a good hour and focus on nothing but throwing booms using b,f,b/db + punch at varying ranges (from full screen to mid screen to up close) using your command normals for movement.

^That’s what I do.

EDIT: if I feel like I’m losing the battle, I’ll stop charging and dodge a few fireballs to regain my composure and then continue.

Thanks. I’m going to spend a ton of time in the lab working on that and see where it takes me.

Np. To note: There’s no charge partitioning in SSF4. There’s only precharging (I’m assuming that’s what you’re referring to). After awhile of chucking booms, you’ll get the hang of throwing booms naturally and know when you have charge and when you don’t. It’ll become instinct. Don’t fall into the habit of spamming booms for the sake of spamming booms. Learn when to spam safely and when not to.

I’m so used to Guile’s SB charge time that when I try to use Bisons SK, Chun’s Kikoken, DeeJay’s Max Out all i get is a whiffed normal.
-_-"

Yeah, that’s (Pre-Charging) what I was referring to.

And you’re exactly right. Sometimes I would just continuously throw them out, then eat a jump-in combo, or a random Hyper which would hurt like hell. Btw, Training mode has been helping a lot. Haven’t played any actual matches yet, but I feel like my understanding his risen a good amount.

I just have another question: how do you get better with teching? There are times when I feel like I can sense when someone is about to throw me, which allows me to successfully tech–then there are times where someone throws one jab while I’m in blockstun then proceed to throw me; it’s usually a disaster afterwards. Is mashing LP+LK while in blockstun a bad idea? I know teching is usually based on instincts, but man it can be kinda hard to do sometimes–especially when I’m fighting Ken.

This article here will help you out greatly in terms of crouch teching. Read it! Learn it! Understand it!

Understanding Crouch Tech by MarioDooD

And then there’s the next stage to that…

Beating Crouch Tech by MarioDooD

Edit: In terms of your last question, a good/solid player will test to see if you’re mashing tech in between strings and will set up frametraps to bait your teching and punish you severely for it. So yeah, mashing crouch tech is not a good idea at all.

^Thanks alot, Nemesys! I really need to read, learn, and understand those before I start going into battles again. That article is definitely going to point me in the right direction.

Glad I asked that question. I would’ve probably continued to blindly mash crouch tech had I not known. Thanks again.

Morning/Afternoon/Evening you shade wearing mofo’s!

I’m a Gen player who has recently picked up Guile, was playing last night and just couldn’t seem to zone anybody, I was being outfireballed, and kept getting jumped in on by Sakura chumps! (highly irritating -.-") Apart from the obvious work on AA and precharge. I was wondering if anybody had any tips tricks or general advice, maybe I could spar with someone if they’re willing to put in some time? I’ve got some combo’s going on and some very basic corner pressure but I was just hoping someone could help with my progress.
