SSF4 Dudley Match-up Thread

It means you really shouldn’t ever be winning this match with any sort of consistency. You would need to get lucky.

7-3 means you still win 30% of the matches. It’s not unwinnable by any means. It doesn’t even mean that you have to catch your opponent sucking to win. You just have to make a few good guesses. For example, Zangief vs Sagat is (was?) 7-3, but if Zangief gets a knockdown he can win the round in 10 seconds.

I don’t think there’s much value in trying to judge whether a matchup is fair or not anyway - at least for a Dudley player. You just need to know when each player is at an advantage and what options you have. Except at really high levels of play where both players know the matchup and their characters do matchup numbers start mattering a lot. And honestly I don’t think I’ve seen any SSF4 Dudley players at that level yet. Edit: Or at the very least they haven’t played any opponents that know the Dudley matchup well enough.

If Balrog is doing midscreen dash punches you can neutral jump/ultra/EX JU them on reaction. TAP is a free neutral Jump/Forward Fierce/Ultra/w/e. He’s only really scary up close when he has momentum. If you learn to grab his EX punches and block/punish the overhead this match up really isn’t that bad.

I think the lp straight is too fast to react to unless you have a normal which dodges it altogether like Ryu cr.mk.

I’ve done it and have seen other players do it as well. Of course, once you punish one with a focus crumple and they keep doing it, it gets easy. Create situations where they would use it and react accordingly: AKA, crouch mid screen and wait for them to zoom towards you. A good Balrog is one that would hit confirm into his dash punches, in which case you should be able to get close and pressure him more easily.

Oh this reminds of something I wanted to post a few weeks ago:

I was playing a scrubby Ryu. He had full super and I went for cr HK on his wakeup. Lo and behold, he mashed out Super so I was like >:/ thinking I was going to eat the Super, but the cr. HK took Dudley low enough where the Super whiffed completely.

That being said, is it likely that Rog’s straight could be dodged with crHK?

The straight starts up in 13 frames, that’s just not long enough for you to react and have your hitbox move low enough in time. If you were whiffing it on purpose while anticipating a dash straight, that might be different.

That’s more start up than an a sonic boom, it can’t be that hard. Assuming crHK does duck low enough in time to dodge it, you could hit the straight’s whiff recovery.

Balrog’s lp straight is 6 frames, EX is 7.

Dudley’s cr.hk is 14 frames.

Where did you get this? The frame data on eventhubs says 13[4]

My frame data must be wrong then. 6 Frames is at point blank range (I’m assuming we’re not doing it at point blank range so you wouldn’t have to react that fast) but my data has 13(4) for activation. Damn Android apps.

It’d have to be tested but I get the feeling you may end up getting counter hit before you hitbox moves low enough for the straight to whiff you.

Sorry, I think I looked at the frame data wrong.

Posting this before I forget it again.

Reversal U1 does not reliably punish Honda EX Headbutt on block if the EX Headbutt is blocked from anything other than point blank. Twice during a match I have pulled off the ultra, seen the reversal message, and then had my ultra blocked.

honda

I registered just to ask to ask this

What on EARTH to do against turtling Hondas? Just played the most infuriating Honda who sat back and spammed heabutts. Now, I know Fierce Punch beats them, but miss one and you’re in trouble. Considering you take about a tenth of his bar compared to about a fifth for his headbutt, It’s a bit of a nightmare. Closing in on him makes a surprise headbutt very real.

Once you get it, he just headbutted as soon as he saw the overhead. Couldn’t seem to use the mk AA against his HP Air…

raging.

did you block crouching or standing?

this has happened to me on a few occasions, mostly when honda was close to me and in the corner.
i haven’t quite figured out why this happens yet.

Has anyone confirmed if Honda jump-ins can be beat by cr. RH? That would help a lot. I’ll check myself tonight if no one else has already.

I’m pretty sure you have to block EX Headbutt standing t punish with RT.

it beats some of his jump ins such as nj.hp, it loses to j.mp and possible far jump fierce. i think it’ll beat his j.rh as well

Dudley crouching I was able to punish EX headbutt from any range with a reversal U1
Dudley standing I was able to punish EX headbutt from any range with a reversal U1

There were times I was standing and crouching close and got U1 to land without reversal timing. I was trying for reversal though. Can’t seem to land a delay U1 from far out (execution probably :/)

Tried Dudley in corner and Honda in corner and landed U1 with reversal timing standing and crouching close.

Close = a blocked point blank Honda jab apart

Yeah, there must be extra recovery if you block a point blank headbutt.
