Ha, I told you guys this was Dudley’s hardest matchup!
Standing HP / Step Straight is your friend, especially counter hit Step Straight, Stand HK xx MGB. Whilst using this move will result in taking lots of hits from Chun Li (as her normals are better), if you can land a couple yourself, you can make her back off, or get the counter hit to enable you to combo into the MGB.
At the end of the day, for me this match is just like 3S, eventually you will be forced into taking a calculated risk. Disguise your play so that when you make your move, it’s not telegraphed.
it doesnt even work on “mid” attacks that hit below dudley’s waist see:dhalsim s.fp.
ok balrog…for real how the fuck are you supposed to beat this character?
you have to jump, c.fp beats that basically. his ground normals (s.rh s.jab and sweep) are all way way better than yours.
once you get in you have to be so careful, and once he’s out it is extremely difficult to force him into a clean mixup situation given his wakeup options (wakeup ex rush will stop all of your meaties but throw clean, try to throw a c.jabbing rog…lol)
basically you lose on the ground, lose in the air, win if you get 3 clean hits somehow.
I’m new to Dudley (since I’m trying to give most if not all characters a try), but so far the major problem I’ve having is that he doesn’t seem to have any real pokes. I seriously think all his ground normals have the same range outside of f.hp and that can be ducked (or at least seems like it might be able to be some of the smaller characters), so…?
It really seems that besides Ducking, he had to jump to get in, which is bad news, especially since he doesn’t have any aerial mobility like so many other newcomers.
Agreed. Besides Chun Li, Balrog seems to be the worst matchup for Dudley (arguably even worse than Chun Li) unless there’s something completely obvious I’m missing. I think those two characters have given me the most trouble of all the cast so far, but I haven’t fought too many good Zangiefs or T.Hawks yet with Dudley, but unless I’m doing something really stupid, don’t see those two being quite as bad as long as I’m playing smartly. The Chun Li/Balrog fights just seem completely lopsided. Can’t win them all I suppose, and even if Dudley isn’t “top tier”, he’s a lot more fun to play than many other characters and still does very well overall against most of the cast. I disagree with his current standing on the tier list though (I was thinking around B) and some of the matchup ratings are totally off base, but it’s not too far off in general.
Hmm I like were this thread is going cause I am having problems with Balrog. So bad i threw off my headphones today and said “**** this game”. I could have swore I saw someone say that Dudleys and Rogs cr.lp was about the same. NO IT IS NOT SIR. Not at all. They may have towned down Rog’s ultra dmg and what not, but he still seems just as annoying as before. If not more cause it seems in this game that cr.lp with a good bit of characters is like best poke in the game. And throw is stupid godlike cause ur only option is backdash or tech. Can’t cr.lp them out of it. Whats up with that hit box. Don’t no much about this game cause I hated vanilla. But the additional characters made me come back to this game. Me personally I just be EXTREMLY patient with rog. Online is nothing cause most people are scrubs and spam light punch. Any toddler can do Rog combos so im getting sick of that match up. Chunli I guess since my friend is really good with her I know how to play her. So I beat most chuns. Her df hk. Ex cross counter ultra usually puts me back in the game if I ran into too many of her stupid pokes. Dudleys cr.mp is decent if u stay at the right range. Any chun is going to throw out something and get hit by it and just buffer w/e combo u want after it hits. I can’t help anyone with a rog fight though cause i have problems myself. So good luck with that one.
Yeah, I got murdered by a Chun for free (though I don’t think I’ve beaten her yet with any of the characters I’ve used). She seems to anti-air everything have pretty damn easily unless you’re right on top of there, but I can’t see how to get there between c.RH’s godly hitbox and Kikouken on top of that damned flip over kick seeming to always leave her at an advantage. I think she can duck f. HP even while neutral.
And, yeah, I’m pretty sure that even if Dudley’s jab is fast as Balrog’s, it seems like it has less priority. Balrog seems to be like Sagat: he didn’t get that much weaker; he just takes longer to kill you.
At least Sagat can be interesting to play against, though. Balrog has no reason to do anything other than jab and turtle unless you have a projectile (and sometimes even then…). I have no idea how to beat him with most characters that don’t have a projectile (outside of T. Hawk), much less Dudley, who seems to get manhandled out of all his tools and have specials that are a lot less safe.
(I’ve come to hate Turn Punch so damn much.)
I’m sure there’s a way to combat it. I’m just not seeing it (I hope), especially since I’m a noob with Dudley.
standing fierce apparently stuffs most of his moves.
Against chun li i havent had the nightmare that most of you guys have. i mean yea its a bad matchup, but i have a clue unlike other matchups i.e. balrog/bison. and its not like im playin shitty chuns either they pretty damn good, but perhaps theyre not exploiting the matchup. if you see hazanshu you can just stuff that shit w/ fierce before it even hits the ground. and i pretty much just chill and if they start throwing kikoukens i ducking straight. i guess the only time you should be jumping in on her is when she’s knocked down. honestly i try to focus damn hear everything and get a rolling thunder, her fireball is one of the easiest to ultra on reaction so it gives you more ground to work with.
against balrog i swear to god if you dont catch an early lead with a quick fierce or focus then you are just fucked
Yeah, that’s not doing jack shit against good Honda’s because it doesn’t beat their jab. There’s really no safe way to approach them so you have to turtle a lot and make them come to you.
I totally feel your pain regarding Balrog. Every time I play a ranked match and I see Balrog I just feel like rage quitting before the match even begins. Same goes for Chun (that goes without saying, really), Dictator, Guile — basically most (if not all) of the chargers. I hate 'em all.
While I’m liking the fact that Dudley can link s. HK off of Dart Shot, I find it infuriating how in SF4 and in SSF4, people can just mash on c. LP (or uppercuts/SPD) when you do a poke string and you’re instantly screwed.
One of the things I miss in 3s is how easily you could hit confirm s. HK x Duck xx Super. With the way super canceling works in SSF4 (or hit stun, I guess you can say), that hit confirm is sadly no longer an option for me.
I actually don’t think Guile is that bad, though maybe it’s because I’m used to fighting him and near-psychic at Ducking Sonic Booms. Presently, the only real problem with that match-up seems to be baiting Flash Kicks. Does Dudley have a cross-up attack? Because that seems like it would help him even more against Guile.
The others can go fuck themselves, though. I did finally manage to beat a Chun-Li yesterday if only barely, though I should died if he/she hadn’t been stupid enough to try to Kikosho my barely missed Cockscrew Cross, which traded for the kill.
I didn’t really play much of vanilla SF4 (primarily because it felt so different from 3s) but Dudley’s inclusion drew me back to SSF4. When I saw videos of you surface I felt somewhat nostalgic hahaha!
S4 and I have kept in touch over the years and he’s given me a lot of good pointers with Dudley for SSF4. I’ll be sure to read your guide, too.
Ive gotten dudley jump lk to cross up sometimes in training mode, but its probably super specific since ive only done it against hakan midscreen like twice. Maybe he’s got some quick getup cross-ups like cammy or something.
