SSF4 AE Zangief Changes, Videos, Match-up Discussion

Very informative, thank you.

To an extent these seem like early impressions at the most; in some areas he’s bad (Sagat is still annoying as ever), but with the changes to jab SPD and his U2 he feels like he has much more tools at his disposal than in Vanilla/Super.

For me at least it feels like his approach can be much more tricky and Gief’s ability to force a guessing game from his opponent is much stronger. As exemplified by WorstGiefEver’s new video, without the knockdown on EX GH you limit the ways which your opponent can escape thus limiting their options overall. Sure getting in feels a bit more difficult in some cases but once you’re in you can pretty much stay in.

Take this with a grain of salt though since I don’t tend to play a lot of high level players…

You’re too cool for school WorstGief. Great video!

Oh snap mind if I ask EH to feature this is some primo stuff.

Awesome video WorstGief! Thanks!

God bless you worstgief, some really informative stuff in there. Had no idea gief could control the corner so effectively with the siberian blizzard.

GOOD FUCKING SHIT WORSTGIEFEVER NICE SHIT …I learned a few things. i wish my videos would have been on eventhubs…so jello of you

heres some vids of me playing offline, but yeah…i’m the black guy with the chef suit on lol

it starts from 42mins until like 1:36

something wrong with the link…

wgief, thank you for the tutorial… BTW, i play the 3d version only so i never play AE and i can say that the GH kd can be avoided if we trust in our footsie game.

And guys, skill is more important that matchup numbers…

Edit: looks like this has been posted in the vid thread as well

sooo… it is possible… what a gief player… it look so simple…

what a epic match: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Oebq3YFUlk

Cool match. It seemed Yun could jump away at will whenever he was hit with SPD or EXGH. The Gief player even tried using cr.lk to stop it and it didn’t work. Should he have been using st.mp?

Me vs Guy the beginning
Me vs Cody 42:25
Me vs Akuma 1:13:00
Me vs Juri 1:28:24

gief is a lot better in ae. and for the record, whether u can do a walking 720 or not really doesnt mean shit and it doesnt make u a better gief player

I mean nice job Flash, but I’m not seeing almost anything Gief couldn’t already have done, and I’m not seeing lots of things (read: meaty mixups) that he could have done before. In the like 8 or so rounds I just watched I didn’t see the better lp spd range come up more than a couple times and I only saw the better distance-related safety on green hands a couple times, whereas you hit who even knows how many ex hands and didn’t have access to any of the great things you would have gotten if those had been knockdowns. Gotta say I’m honestly really confused about why you see this as an improvement. That’s cool if you feel like fewer mixups is more your style (although that’s weird considering you played Viper), but… you could have already played almost the exact same way you do by just voluntarily never doing crossups or option selects or safe jumps on your ex hand knockdowns.

i could not say it better…there is not substitute for EXGH KD. gief is a little bit more powerful but worse. i think these MU are gonna end up like 6-4 yun adv. 5.5-4.5 yang adv. 6-4 oni. but for now only a few people can use them the right way. U2 is nice but too much guessing, i still use U1 more. BTW nice video WGE. really nice.

I can see what you mean by watching the videos that the new stuff didn’t really come into play I haven’t really got super comfortable with the new range but anyway overall the week I played gief in super it felt like I would get mashed out before I even had an option to do anything. Now when you get to that range where everyone started doing stuff you have the option to grab and you use the fear from that to get closer where he becomes extremely dangerous. I think once people get over the fear of walking that wasn’t possible before imo people will really start to see the power of the new gief

Imo U2 is almost necessary in most of Gief’s matchups. Control corner escapes better, control neutral jumpers better, get an actual dangerous mixup after ex hand, create more jumpins, beat certain meaty mixups (like some of Akuma’s demon flip options), etc. I think U1 is pretty much left in the dust frankly.
