Against Bison’s ultra 2 (when he does that stupid 50/50) can you just ex spd it? I’ve seen people throw him out of it right as he hits the ground so I was just wondering.
I don’t see why people are having too many issues with some of these characters. With Honda it doesn’t seem like your core game plan changed all that much since AE. He deals a bit more damage now but there’s not much else to it. Get the health lead and make him come to you, most of Hawk’s jumping normals beat out headbutt if spaced properly. Should you be in a situation where he has the health lead it’s a bit more difficult but I wouldn’t say Hawk has it worse off than when Honda’s trying to get the health lead back. I’d say it’s about 5-5, if it’s at all in his favor it’s very slightly so.
I used to hate fighting Balrog until I learned not to press buttons right in his face. He WILL outpoke you, but that’s alright because once he pushes you out of his cr. jab range the match becomes yours. Turnpunch can be grabbed on block, headbutt is easily baited and punished, and if you notice he’s getting greedy with the light dash punch EX SPD should catch him out of it if you can react. Neutral jump body presses seem to fuck with his dashpunch game too, although I haven’t really dabbled much with that since I haven’t played too many Boxers in 2012. I treat Dictator similarly, but he can be more annoying. You gotta learn to space your anti-air normals right, also don’t let him get away with halfscreen slides. Neither is really a terrible matchup, Boxer is easily even or prehaps even in Hawk’s favor. I don’t fight too many Dictators so I can’t honestly give my opinion on that matchup but I don’t have too much trouble with them.
One thing I will agree with though is that Hakan is horrifying to fight now. I played a very short set with UltraDavid when AE first came out I went 1 -2 against his Hakan. Ultra 2 shuts down a lot of Hawk’s offense, if he’s knows Condor Spire puts you in the air he can very easily react to it. I can’t find a way to deal with his uncrouchable setups on wakeup, I had a different Hakan do it to me about 3 times in row before he missed one and I could finally get off the ground. Oiled up he’s an absolute monster and if he can keep momentum going there isn’t much you can do to stop him. I need more matchup experience to really get a good idea of how Hawk fairs in it overall, but right now I’d say it’s a 6 - 4 in Hakan’s favor.
Sorry for the wall of text by the way, hopefully someone will get some good information out of that mess of sentences.
I don’t know why you guys think Hakan is a bad matchup…at the worst it’s 5-5 I think it’s 6-4 for Hawk. As soon as he runs out of oil he’s free. Just make sure you start out on the offensive and make him run out of oil, then you can literally just walk jab him to death. Just know his setups and what he’s capable of and he shouldn’t be hard at all. And just ex dp the uncrouchable setups…
With all due respect, I’ve seen alot of your posts and not once have I seen you mention a matchup being worse then 6 - 4 for Hawk. Do you think Hawk has any terrible matchups at all? If you say that the Blanka matchup is 6 - 4 at worse I’m gonna faint. Jk, lol
Just curious, and serious question btw.
Lol I just don’t agree with a lot of you guys that Hawk has so many bad matchups (cause you guys seem to think he loses against the whole cast). I think he’s mid or mid-low tier and his hardest matchups are Dee jay, sim, fei (I think this is 6-4 for fei but tbh I think I just have a problem with fighting fei’s), Juri is tough if she gets the knockdown cause she can mix you up with high lows, sagat is in sagat’s favor, guile is slightly in guile’s favor, obviously blanka is his worst matchup, honda is bad, Ryu is 6-4 for ryu. Oh and Chun. Chun is 7-3 for chun imo, I hate fighting her just as much as blanka.
Vega is also annoying.
Okay, I see. Thanks for your response.
Yeah, I agree that some of us make it sound like he’s disadvantaged against everyone. I believe that a good portion of it is personal frustration honestly.
I’ve played a lot of Blankas and I personally don’t think it’s Hawk’s worst match-up anymore. It’s still up there as far as difficulty goes but now that you can punish EX-upball his universal escape method is taken away. Once you get in you at least have an opportunity to keep pressure going. I’ve played a lot of Blankas in 2012 and he doesn’t seem to be as big of an issue as he used to be. I’m still unsure about who we should be fearing right now and I really want to get more matches in before I say some words I might eat later, but I’m thinking Vega’s probably gonna end up being the new bane of Hawk’s existence. In AE I didn’t hate him that much but now it just seems unfair.
Gief absolutely runs a train on me whenever I play that match. As a somewhat inexperienced Hawk, I need some help.
Imo Hawk is one of Giefs tougher fights. Your normals are better than his and lariat is basically useless against Hawk. Dp his jumps and use your normals and you should be fine. If he has u2 stocked then cr.hp can aa and even thrust peak sometimes works.
OK so, “Getting in” is just an option? Just like that?
This sounds really really silly.
What normals are you talking about?
Juri is easy? WHat???! T hawk can knock her down just like that? :wtf:
I wasn’t aware that her keep away game was so awful! Seriously, will you please explain how you make this match up so easy?
What changed about vega that made this match worse?
Sky high claw makes this matchup unbearsble, and now that it knocks down it’s hell. /troll face

In this matchup the best way to fight Gief is to play very defensively. Gief has a tough time getting in on Hawk once he turtles on him. The S.Roundhouse is a really good footsie tool in this matchup (Hawk basically has the better normals) because Gief is one of the few characters that the S.Roundhouse won’t whiff against when crouching and he doesn’t have good answers for it. It’s not a move you can abuse like crazy (Because a good Gief knows they can use their S.MP to stuff it with proper timing), but if you use it properly and in moderation Gief has a tough time dealing with it.
It’s also extremely helpful if you can react fast enough to use Fierce Tomahawk when Gief jumps. Gief’s jump is so slow and his jumping hurtbox is so big that there is much more leniency with using Tomahawk against him compared to most other characters. If you’re able to Fierce Tomahawk consistently the Gief Player will hesitate like crazy to even think about jumping on you. I also recommend using U2 in this matchup.
Gief is an easy matchup (One of the few matchups where Hawk has a very significant advantage), but he’s still a threatening character. Just play patiently, turtle on him like crazy, master usage of the Fierce Tomahawk and Gief Players will hate you
I agree with this tbh. I think it’s a hard 6-4 now. Though I don’t feel like Claw is Hawk’s worst matchup. His worst matchup is Chun imo. At least if you get a knockdown on Claw he doesn’t have a reversal to get out with.
Far standing round house and standing strong are your best friends in this matchup. You outpoke the hell out of him and the only answer he has to roundhouse is jumping fierce, which can be DPed. Grappler vs grappler matches are always very interesting for me to watch because it shows how well both players know their footsies. Should Geif manage to get in don’t let him get away with greenhand shenanigans, you can use many of his throw setups against him.
Gief can get your ass with st. MP on your st. HK. If he spaces j. HP properly you cannot DP.
This matchup is not free, don’t make it look like that.
If he starts using s.mp use s.hp to whiff punish. The matchup is definitely free if you keep him out.
Geif has the advantage in the knockdown game however, in the footsie game, T.hawk has an advantage. T.Hawk can use off of his normals in this match-up to confuse Geif pretty hard.
If you knock Geif down, you are honestly better off in doing nothing. You want Geif to come to you because hawk has all of the tools to keep him out. Once T.Hawk has a considerable life lead (Which is usually 2-4 hits) T.Hawk does not really have to do much.
You have to make sure that you are winning in the meter race. Stay in range to punish lariet. If you stay back waiting for him, most geifs will just spam quick lariet to gain meter and if he is winning in the meter race, T.Hawk will lose. Geif has to take risks to get in and meter allows him to.
I don’t know what else… Its pretty straight forward just…don’t get knocked down. The only reason why this is even is because Geifs oki is rediculous against T.hawk. If you get knocked down its also important not to freak out… Keep your head…and Keep him out. Don’t let geif get into your head.
Completely agree with this. Gief is DEFINITELY more threatening when he has Hawk knocked down then vice-versa. The thing I hate about being knocked down against Gief is how he can just cross-up J.LK, do Bear Grab right after and it works like a combo or something because I can’t seem to do ANYTHING about it. The blockstun on J.LK is so short. I’m dead serious, it seems like EVERYTIME a Gief Player does that to me I just cant do anything about it but get Bear Grabbed for free right after. I’ve even seen it happen to other Hawk Players too. Is there anything practical that Hawk can do to not get dominated by Gief’s cross-up J.LK -> Bear Grab?
Geifs options;
Knee Drop->Bear Hug xx Knocked Down Again
Low Short xx Lariet Knocked Down Again
Nothing
It has really good frame advantage and its active for a very small amount of time so nine times out of then if you see it, its too late.
