SSF4 AE T.Hawk Match-up Thread

Is this matchup really terrible now? Idk because I rarely play against any decent Hakan Players. Mind going into detail?

When I’m playing against Bison Players’ who like to turtle by doing Devil’s Reverses’ and I have the lifelead I like to be as far away as possible and do whiffed LP Condor Spires. Not only are you building meter faster then Bison, but you’re also forcing him to come after you. Alot of Bison Players like to " fake " you out by doing a HeadStomp in place of a Devil’s Reverse, so watch out for that.

Unfortunately if the Bison Player has the lifelead you just have to come after them. I just walk towards him while doing carefully timed LP Condor Spires here and there to build meter while I’m at it. Sometimes I jump while walking forward to see if I can stuff him early air-to-air.

It’s…dunno. They always hit me with random stuff once they are out of the air as they don’t seem to have recovery. There are those random Slides, random Scissors and Psychos…

Also lol@myself for losing to Guiles doing your standard jump in roundhouse, sweep, random flash kick patterns.

EDIT: Cody is ridiculous, that damage…seriously it makes you feel like Seth. Also, I can’t find a good way to approach him.

EDIT2: What do I do against Dudleys jumping Elbow? ST. HK trades in Dudleys favor. Tomahawk is too slow? At least I got stuffed a few times.

Hakan vs Hawk is the same thing. >__>
Get him without oil and he’s dead, fight him with oil and it’s pretty much an even mid. All oil-ups are a free dive or far round-house punish. Force him to play mid until oil runs out, then work your way in or punish him for trying to oil up again. No worse than 5-5, probably still 6-4 Hawk.

^ Fierce Tomahawk works vs Dudley, you just have to execute faster due to his jump height. If you’re worried about it being stuffed, just use EX Tomahawk.

Against Cody, your best bet against one who can control his space well is getting a bar to go through rocks with EX Spire and looking for a sweep against any high pokes to stuff Ex Spire.

I’ve been playing against a lot of Sim lately. I understand fully now why it’s a 5-5 matchup…

Condor Spire is a very good move to cover space in this matchup. Spire can trade, go over, or beat most limbs.
In the reverse, Dhalsim can use his slide to stuff non reaction based limbs
He can also blow you up with Yoga Fire on a poorly space spire.
Jump jab and strong can beat him air normals if you time them early
At the same token if he does nothing, he can blow up on the way down
You can bait anti airs out of him if he gets anxious
If Dhalsim gets knocked down, and wakes up, he does not have an answer to T.Hawka jabs, literally, no answer.
You can just push normals in his face and force him to try to deal with it.
In the corner, he cant teleport out.

Dhalsim can zone T.Hawk out but once T.hawk gets that one knockdown, it’s over.

His only options on wake up are throw, slide. Random ultra, random super, teleport (which can be punished)

Jab/strong into ex spires links Drive sim nuts.

Probably already said, but to reiterate - always use ultra 2 against Fuerte.

It does several things:

  1. can blow up Fuerte’s safe tortilla/cross-up/air throw - mix-up setup
  2. keeps Fuerte grounded (no annoying mid-screen wall-jump to react to)
  3. not sure about this one - does anyone have an ultra 2 os against Fuerte’s trying to ex guac away? In case they try to avoid cross-ups, spd os, and normal attacks/spire. Ex guac recovers fast like super now so it’s much harder to react to unless you try to bait.

In any case, if you can keep Fuerte grounded a bit for close to mid-screen range, you have better reward/risk ratio.

I think I’m at that point where I literally drop my controller on the ground and leave against Honda. Any advice would be extremely helpful.

Hey guys, I played an M. Bison player who always used teleport on wakeup. The recovery on it is so short, so it feels like it is hard to time the punish. I’m guessing a psychic Condor dive or St. H would be best for punishment? I also found it hard to corner Bison because of EX psycho crusher. I am unaware of any consistent tools that allow me to hit M.Bison right when he is vulnerable after a teleport.

I love Digimon too!

Seriously though, I think this matchup is back to Super Status where it was 7 - 3 in Honda’s favor. He has the invincibility back on his LP Headbutt and that buff alone made this matchup go from 6 - 4 in Honda’s favor back to 7 - 3.

If Honda has the lifelead you really have no other choice then to play his game and try to close the distance on him. You just have to inch up to him little by little at a time while preparing yourself to block possible Headbutts (I like to do C.Jab every so often to stuff possible surprise Headbutts). EX/Regular Condor Dives are so risky to use in this matchup because they’re both punishable on block but if you can read the Honda Player well it might be in your favor to take the risk of using it. Condor Spire can be useful to try and close the distance carefully while building some meter but against a Honda Player who has good reactions it can be really hard to use Condor Spire safely.

If you have the lifelead, turtle on Honda like crazy and force him to come after you. Make him play your game, let that timer tick away and eventually the Honda Player will come after you. When he does there will be openings where you can punish him and keep him out. Try and maintain it like that for as long as possible.

It’s a tough matchup, but very winnable if you have the patience. Hope my advice helps.

Honestly, Balrog is just as stupid as Blanka. He sits fullscreen all day and throws his punches at you which you cannot punish at all. If you try to jump, he pulls out a headbutt out of his ass. Spire trading with everything in his favor doesn’t make it any better.

Seriously, Blanka, Honda and Balrog are so NOT fun to play. It’s work and it always gets me close to a complete rampage irl.

In ST at least you could Dive in on many characters without being punished if they were to turtle against you. In SF4, you’ve gotta let them chip you for free.

This game…

I agree that Boxer is just a lame pain in the ass and Honda is almost like Blanka Jr. I guess the best thing is getting a life lead and giving them a taste of their own medicine and playing super patient. Hawks got so many boring ass, stressful fights it’s ridiculous.

vs balrog use the new buff nj splash, combo with strong + ex spire for a good damage to stop that dash bullshit, you will make him think twice to not use the dashes, works really good, just watch out to our spacing to not eat a headbutt, also ST FIERCE is good against balrog too

about the dive i agree, is a lame ass DANGEROUS move in this game, EVERYONE in the cast can punish hard even with ultras or supers, its just sucks too much, at least they make the ex dive safe…

Just wanted to follow-up with a character specific combo that only works on Juri -

  1. Crossover Splash -> Close MP -> Close MK -> LP Tomahawk = 348 Damage
  2. Crossover Splash -> Close MP -> Close MK -> MP Tomahawk = 357 Damage
  3. Crossover Splash -> Close MP -> Close MK -> EX Tomahawk -> EX Condor Dive = 403 Damage (Alot of damage for 2 bars of EX)

I’m on PC. I don’t have 2012 yet.

EX Dive isn’t safe either against most of the cast, M. Bison can easily punish with Ultra 1 for example.

M. Bison also likes to molest me with st. HK and I don’t know what to do there either, so I am just taking it.

El Fuertes Ultra 1 catching you while still in the air with a Body Press, so shitty.

Gen’s Ultra 1 can do this too. You can crossup with splash and his U1 hits.

chip guard.

Maybe I should go into tournaments praying I don’t play a Gen or Fuerte that knows what they are doing. That would suck to get beat that way.

Against Bison’s roundhouse…I know it’s not a true punish, but a couple of focus dash in spd/ultra will shut him up (granted, it is a risk)
But also, try to stick in and out of the range where he likes to use roundhouse and whiff punish it with far strong or far medium (fierce if your feel comfortable)
Bison’s wakeup is kind of dumb safe but if the bison simply tries to play footsies i think it’s pretty ok for Hawk. But don’t get me started on that stupid Wiggle Wiggle bullshit.

All’s i can say about el fuerte is that if he has ultra 1 ready to go, you should just prepare yourself for it everytime he’s knocked down. If you really feel the need to jump at him when he’s got it you can time a late dive to beat the ultra on reversal timing or just empty jump.
oh yeah, is Greenflag your GFWL? PC is my main turf too. Once i get my computer up and running again i’ll play a lot more.

Hakan outright beats both the grapplers now… Being oiled up from the beginning ws a HUUUGE buff. He already had some good normals and being oiled up makes them Godlike. He can out footsie hawk pretty easily, being able to hit him at ranges were hawk cant because the oil gives him more range. Same with the spd. Hakan can spd Hawk in ranges where hawk cant. This all applies while oiled. But its not that easy to stay on top of Hakan when he is not oild. Although it can be done its just rather difficult.

Also watching Infultrastion play him, he demonstrated something only Hakan can do. While oiled he can cancel out of a lvl 1 focus att into a normal. So usually in characters can only combo after a focus if it is a lvl 2 or 3 because it causes a state of crumple, But Hakan can combo after a lvl. This mean he is a grapple that cannot be zoned out whiled oiled, which is interesting because he is a grappler that doesnt have the ā€œgrapplersā€ weakness. Character that can easily stay on top of him when he is not oiled up will cause him problems.

I believe Hakan is a sleeper and flyer under the radar. I wouldnt put him in like top 5 but he is pretty damn good

Its hard since they’re sooo few hakan players, its hard to test theory’s out
