SSF4 AE T.Hawk Match-up Thread

Yes, thank you.

Also, how do you guys deal with neutral jumping?

Stand strong, and thrust peak.

Oh, Thrust Peak seems too risky, will try to stick with Strong.

I’ve got another thing to ask, lol: What do I do against turtling Rufus? He seems to have the tools to keep Hawk out until the round ends, get a lead and wait it out?

How are competitive Rufus players playing this matchup? It was just an online scrub I met a few minutes ago. Would a skilled Rufus lame it out the same way?

s.hk beats his long range normals. If he wants to throw out c.hp you can spire it or s.hk it or if you’re close enough fa dash spd. If he’s using s.mp try to stand outside of the range and whiff punish.

I don’t think I’ve ever played a lame Rufus. Most just spam dive kicks and mash ex-messiah like there’s no tomorrow.

I’ll explain how I look at vega and rufus.

Vega; what I am looking for in the opening is seeing if he knows spacing of Vegas normals. I like to stand right outside of the range of his best poke, crouch fierce and strong. You can punish them at max range with stand forward. And you can also punish it with trust peak on reaction. I want to push him into the corner just walking forward toward him while still staying at that max range. If they jump, I dp… Once they are cornered I am staying at max range and not moving. I am waiting for them to tr to use their charge up coves so I can jump back jab them or strong them. Rush down Vegas are fools. Vegas who try to rush you down can be punished with stand forward and stand strong which will drive them nuts. If I knock them down. I am looking for back flip with no meter and a flash kick with meter. On knock down I jab check them… I condition them stay grounded by not tick throwing. If they back flip I dash up and sleep them. If I think they will flash kick I’ll do nothing on wake but I’ll stay out of range of a wake up throw. Scrubs do that shit. If they get a sweep in or any kind of knock down… I don’t panic. I wait for the inevitable throw… So I just block…for as long as I can… If I think they will throw I’ll crouch tech. During Vegas block strings be aware of instant overheads and neutral jump bull shit. Stand strong beats neut ral jump and counter hits. Yu can focus instant over heads. Vega does not have a lot of really true offensive strings…so if you just play good defense and tootsies vega is easy. He is very tricky though don’t fall for vega nonsense. Just always remember to play the way yo want to and not their way. If something does not work fix it immediately. Vegas troll it up when you play the way the want and not the way you want

Why, oh why would you want to play a footsie game vs VEGA? A footsie game, with arguably the king of SF4 footsies? Do I even need to explain why that makes no sense (I main Vega, so I know exactly how that match-up works)? And FYI, crouch fierce is a terrible poke. Be afraid of far forward, low strong and far roundhouse. Possibly far fierce, since it hurts so much and Hawk has no good answer for it outside of guess focus -> dash (which is bait for the roundhouse).

You avoid getting poked to death at mid, figure out how well Vega can control his space/what your best approach is, then get inside and stay there for as long as possible. There is nothing to fear from Vega except U2. You must be aggressive or you lose. Just don’t die in the process and be able to AA; any successful AA is a free in, where Vega is terrible. Anytime Vega is in your face, that’s your advantage. He’ll either have to jump or back dash to avoid being grabbed/hit with EX DP and pressured, which frees Hawk up to advance. Learn to Thrust Peak wall dives, it hits so high up that it stuffs dives clean. Then that’s your advantage as he lands beside you.

WTF are you supposed to do vs Ibuki? I’m getting perfected for at least a round everytime I meet one in ranked. I’m so free once I eat a knockdown.

What is that jump-in she has, it’s kinda strange to block like high-low-high or something, because I always take a few hits from that. Guess I gotta go into practice mode against her.

You have to block against her oki that’s the first step. Her footsie game is really weak so if yours are solid and don’t get knocked down you’ll be pretty ok. I found following a top player who plays a character you are having trouble with helps

Honda’s headbutt changes have me flabbergasted on what to do now. Any advice? Because headbutt seems to stuff cr.lp now no matter how I time it.

Wow, the Viper match-up is HARDER now. She lost some damage, but wow, she gained more stun potential. This Viper did one combo on me using 2 EX Bars (I think), did 1 hit afterwards and I got stunned

I checked the Viper Forums and Viper can now do single combos that can rack up to 1000 STUN. I can’t believe it, this is INSANE. All she needs are a few EX Bars and she can stun characters like Ryu (Or anyone with 1000 stun or less) with ONE opening for a combo.

I never thought of Viper as a broken character, powerful yes but not broken, but wow, this is broken o_O

She still has to get close to you to do that type of stun. One grab, a proper splash combo and one more hit can stun and kill her. Huge risk for Viper to rush you down like that.

Its always been a 5/5 Match-up I might be more so now in Hawks favor because of the overall damage drops and the fact that EX Pound is not a get out of jail free card even though that move was always risky to use vs hawk cause you could throw her out of it, sweep her etc etc…

Hungbee had a lot of trouble with Latif at the last WNF; it was a very frustrating match to watch.

Does El Fuerte really have the advantage over T.Hawk? Some of you guys mentioned it’s a tough matchup but so far I’m not seeing it. El Fuerte is free once knocked down, and from that point on he has to rely on guessing. The whole character is a bunch of mind games and gimmicks. Anyone care to explain in detail why he’s a bad matchup?

is difficult to rate matchup with el fuerte, hes so ass, random stupid and gimmick, but a think its a 5-5

See if you guys can get a hold of “seedogpoo” don’t know if he’s on XBL or PSN, but he was on PC. Good Elf player

I can’t believe a character as fast a Fuerte gets armored moves.

Does anyone know if all characters have the same number of stand up frames? I swear I get overhead grabbed by Fuerte when I’m crouching. I know technically I’m not (or am I?) but it seems like he puts you in the throw animation really fast compared to other characters.

I feel like I’m on a crackpot theory with this one but I’d like to test it out somehow.

You’re playing online, right? Always factor that in when odd crap happens.

@Chazz: It’s less about the match-up and more about people having problems with general defense vs Fuerte pressure. Match-up ratings are usually skewered when there’s some personal issue thrown into the mix.

Fuerte has the same uncrouchable as Guy and Hakan on quick rises. Something to be aware of.

Fuerte hawk is a really bad mathup both ways.

Both have really good mix up options vs eachother so the problem really is who gets the knock down and who keeps them there.

If you guess right on elf mix ups you should be OK and if he guess right on your mix ups HE should be ok. The problem is Elfs mix up vs hawk is really igonorant. Because thawks shoulders are so big its hard to really tell where hes going to land, which makes very cumbersome. Its a matchup you just have to play A LOT of to get really comfortable with it.

Yeah, I have a hard time judging a matchup because of that. Sometimes I can’t tell if it’s just personal frustration or if Hawk is genuinely disadvantaged.

By quick rise, do you mean " quick stand "? If so, I didn’t know that.
