I’ve been learning Rog to fight off Blanka and some of Hawk’s tougher matchups in AE.
How does T Hawk go up against Balrog’s footsies? I’ve been having a lot of trouble against one of my testing partners. He has a combo where he jumps in with what I think is an overhead followed by 3-4 crouching jabs and then a sweep. For some reason I just can’t seem to find an opening between each chain he throws at me. Usually if I throw on enough pressure early to prevent him from doing this I can control the match mostly, but otherwise that combo really stalls me out into a corner where he just goes berserk. Any tips?
All jumping attacks hit as overhead, so yeah, it’s an overhead. Try to DP it if possible. If that’s not possible try T. Hawk’s crouching HP. But crouch HP is a trading machine so it probably won’t beat the attack out right, but it should trade in your favor. If his jump ins get too predictable then you may also try a focus attack, although Hawk’s focus is kinda bad.
Might even try Thrust Peak. Test it in training to see if it beats whatever air attack you’re having trouble with. I never really use it, but others say it works as an anti-air.
And there’s ALWAYS the option of…block.
Thrust peak stuffs all of Yun/Yang’s divekicks all day.
anybody know some tips on stopping adon from spamming jaguar kicks
Bait and punish with 360 works well. If they Jaguar Tooth too close, it should be a free 360 punish.
You also can’t go wrong with U2.

You really think that Fei is 3-7 in Fei’s favor?
yeah…its not good… =(((((
Hey Lewis, I’d like to hear your strats on the Honda matchup. I thought Honda would have the advantage. I’m aware Buttslam is punishable, but I find it annoying trying to advance on a Honda player with a health lead and whores out Neutral j.HP and steers away. I find condor spire helpfu though.
Also I’d like to hear anything ln what Hawk can possibly do against Vega.
Oh, and I’d like to know why you prefer U2 for Guile?
that fei match up looks…suspect. I don’t see how it can possibly be that bad. 4-6, sure, but its not like you can’t play footisies with the guy… and its not like you can’t move in on him. the most annoying thing is how good he is at whiff punishing, and possibly his stupid chicken wing, but that’s a 50/50, so it can work in your favor too. not trying to discredit you or anything, just posting my skepticism is all.
Ill answer this in parts…
All you have to do is knock Honda down. Push him into the corner and keep him there… Once he is knocked down I do cross up spires to mess with the way they are charging and do links that end with Conder Spire link Jab Jab Jab Short Conder Spire. The spire wont connect but it keeps you in their face. Also on knock down I test what they think are tick throws mixing up with Jabs… A lot of times, which is a really bad habit, I test them once with Jab->SPD if that connects then I just mix it up with variations of jabs OR I do links that use DP as an ender but if they are mashing buttons they will get hit by that later end of the combo like Jab-Strong(((Right here is where some thawks would SPD)) JAB-DP
That is a really unsaf example but I think you get what I mean. Usually once I get 1 combo in I just chill out after that… Make honda come to you… I dont like to stay in peoples faces too long once I have a substantial life lead. you have 1150 health you can afford 150 of that dealing with chip damage. 3-5 blocked headbutts and the match is resets itself…
I like Ultra two because of the options it gives on wake up… Gives you more options on the knock down rather than block. Since U2 catchs flashkick on wakeup. I usually get 4 Ultras per match for guiles from all the focusing I do of booms.
Im not too good with the vega matchup… its a footsie match so its really boring and requires a clear head… He is a really frustrating character… Scrubby vegas I just spam Elbow drop and have them come to me… Elbow drop is really good against his wall dives etc and jumping jab and strong do as well. Against good vegas i am still at a loss… “good” vegas just literally press a bunch of buttons and there is not anything I can do. That match up is just really bad I am not too sure how to deal with it yet…I am sure Hungbee would know the answer to that better than I would. I only played…4 vegas? so far? something small. In Super I just troll vegas and win because internet vegas are horrible
My problem with fei long is that he is a melle character that you have to play differently. The frame advantage he has on block is nuts so you cant really punish him in the way you punish other characters. that is what fei foundationally makes him better than the rest of the cast beacuse when you play fei long you have to play him differently just to accomadate the advantages that he has.
Thanks for the info man.
cool, I’ve got a few questions myself.
I have a friend who mains juri. I like to use ultra 2 in that match-up because he jumps so god damn much while playing an extreme keep away game, and its the only way for him to escape corners. without ultra 2, he is also able to safely jump in after a fireball. I suck with execution, so I can’t do ultra 2 all the time when I SHOULD be doing it, but I see the lock down potential and the few wins it has given me. U2 also catches her standing hk and all of her pinwheels. but this might just be a case of me being terrible with anti airing. what do you think of the match-up and why U1 for her?
I have only played a handful of evil ryu online, and they suck online. I noticed that E. Ryu seems to have more recovery after shooting a fireball then regular Ryu, making him SO much easier for me to dive at him for free. whats your thoughts on the match-up? why U1, unlike ryu? what makes him more dangerous, besides bigger damage output?
Juri is free. You hit her twice and make her come to you. The same rule I have with all shotos who have a butt keepaway; Let them come to you. You SPD Juri once and now you sit full screen and spam whiff spires which beat dive anyway if you time it right. I hate Juri I think she is god awful and requires too much work to win; So take advantage of that. Same goes with all characters made of FCKING GLASS you hit them twice and back up. Its ok to not play the game sometimes if that means a V on the screen for you.
E.Ryus give me some trouble. I look at it like playing a Akuma with a less effective keepaway. Get in their face and make them guess; two wrong guess’ equal a win or a dizzy into a win so…
I use Ultra 1 because hes made of glass. I tried U2 and it works on his wakeup fairly well but later on I can tell he is going to stay grounded.
His neutral jump forward or roundhouse is really good IDK what it is yet be ause I dont even touch him but that move is really good and stuffs stuff really well…
Need some Oni Help. I can handle it, sorta just like some Community feed back on how you t.Hawkers are handling a real good Oni (if you faced some).
Just play footsies and punish his toward normals; most normally toward roundhouse and feirce. And like all thawks should not do but we are all guilty of it, dont Conder Dive. Hell…dont jump
I cannot tell you how many times I break this rule, I get blown up for it all the time. the shotos anti air game is too good to get away with it usually.
I’m starting to believe FA may be the answer to the Vega matchup.
You can FA -> Dash up and 360 when you absorb an attack.
You can also FA LV1 since it has good range and cancel it into dash if they block. What you want to do is hope that FA LV1 trades with one of his poke attacks so you can get a free 360.
I usually don’t use FA at all during fights, but this may be a matchup it can have some purpose.
This isn’t the solution to the Vega matcup, but it’s something.
The matchup is the new blanka is not easy… I am going to try to find a good Claw and just play him… .Here is a lit of matchups Thawk players have to learn in order if Importance
