SSF4 AE T.Hawk Match-up Thread

How´s the rufus matchup? And do you think thawk will have at least a 5-5 against the twins since they are supposed to have a hard time against gief (granted gief and thawk are not the same, but just wondering) ?

I do find that a very late body splash will beat EX SBK. The timing is odd, but it does work well once you figure it out.

double post

Hey guys. I was playing Akuma for a long time until recently I have picked up The Hawk and it is going really well. I feel very comfortable with him but I am missing information on some specific matchups.

Gouken - If people know what they are doing they can keep you out very well and punish you badly if you arent PERFECT with your approach. How can I get in on this guy?

Blanka - I know I can dash up after a blocked AA ball and throw but other than that he keeps jumping away until I am in the corner and then I cant jump cause he will ball underneath me and head towards the other corner. How do I deal with this best?

Lastly a few basic questions:

-Whats the best air to air for Hawk?
-Whats the rules on the back dash invincibility? Ive seen people, while in the corner, back dash a jump in, the kick goes threw Hawk, then he hits with ultra…whats the rules here?
-Whats your go to BnB? I always hit like 3 cr. lp but then I dont know where to go from there or if I should only do 2 and then something else to get more dmg in.

Let me know! Thanks!!

I split up drummerkids post and I’m going to adresss it in order it comes up.

Gouken is a terrible match-up. As a Gouken player he wants to zone you out with Fireballs and try to bait into doing his patterns. Here are just some key points rather than explain them one by one. This is really basic.

-DO NOT JUMP UNLESS YOU GET A KNOCK DOWN
-ALWAYS TRY TO PUSH GOUKEN INTO THE CORNER. BUT REMAIN ON THE DEFENSIVE
-BE CONTENT WITH BLOCKING
-IF ITS UNSAFE: HP SPD.
-PUT GOUKEN IN A SITUATION WHERE HE HAS TO COME TO YOU. I.E GET LIFE LEAD AND SIT ON IT.

You have 1150 health. Use that extra meat to block fireballs. I personally like this matchup but I’m used to it.

Blanka.
I learned Hakan just for Blanka.
I am not the one to say anything about Blanka. I counter pick him with Hakan so I rarely use to Blankas anymore. IDK why; But that matchup is really good for Hakan.

Lastly a few basic questions:

-Whats the best air to air for Hawk? **I like jumping LP, and Neutral Jump HP**

-Whats the rules on the back dash invincibility? Ive seen people, while in the corner, back dash a jump in, the kick goes threw Hawk, then he hits with ultra...whats the rules here?** I dont know what you mean here. I rarely jump anymore so. . . . Idk? Rephrase this**
-Whats your go to BnB? I always hit like 3 cr. lp but then I dont know where to go from there or if I should only do 2 and then something else to get more dmg in.

I usually just try to out footsie my opponents. T.Hawk is not the character you drop big combos on people.

I meant when someone else jumps in on T. Hawk, I have seen people back dash and then hit with ultra and it will make him invincible to their jump in attack. Why does this work?

back dashes have invincibility.

Yes every character has this. First 8 frames or so if I am not mistaken.

People who Jump in on a Standing T.Hawk are brave. =/

not really, his DP sucks, and his AA normals get stuffed or trade a lot.

If they do a jump that isn’t a safe jump on your wakeup they eat an HP DP easy. If you have meter and they screw up their safe jump you get an ex dp.

DP gets stuffed easy. And safe jumping hawk is easy. With meter sure exDP is ok. But it runs out of invincibility after 5f and loses to some things as well. Without meter jumPing in on hawk is nothing to worry about. With meter worry is minimal.

Safe jumping hawk is not easy since you have EX spd and ex dp is awfully good. very good auto correct and not the easiest safe jump. its 5 frames isnt it? thats like seths and people still have issues safe jumping him correctly.

like joe lewis said, jumping in on a **standing **t.hawk is quite brave. if you know the ranges and appropriate timings of his AA tools you can flat out beat most everything and even if it trades almost every single trade i’ve seen is in hawk’s favor. Now, to jump in on a t.hawk after he’s been knocked down is different. I suggest learning to block. It’s a great tactic and everybody can do it. Especially if you think your opponent will safe jump you or is option selecting you. I really only use ex dp if i’m certain my opponent has mistimed their safe jump, doesn’t have a cross up tatsu, or if i’ve got two bars and I can dive the hell out of there if they did safe jump me. I haven’t tried that ex spd tactic yet–I actually prefer it when people attempt to neutral jump me on wakeup. st.mp and thrust peak are fantastic for that. of course, everything i’ve just written has already been said like fifty times between a number of hawk forum regulars. happy new year.

Any Tips Against GEN and GUY? i hear gen is free to T hawk but today i get annoyed by this old men, he start to jump and i dont know what do and punish him, and what is effective to that GUY pressure he start jump and combos and i cant do nothing, what i can punish him? sorry for my bad english, i dont speak english.

Any way that Guy tries to get in is generally punishable (if they try to get in that is). Bushin flip loses to cl.mp. Your normals are generally better than his so try to out-footsie him. Bait out ex spin kick on wakeup if he has meter. If not, it’s an easy safe jump into any mix-up.

Gen, knock him down and you win.

If guy bushin flips, just duck. I know its against ALL natural SF instinct to stand against jump attacks but really it just destroys all of his bushin mix ups. You distinctly hear him say something when he does it so its easy to differentiate from just the normal jump elbow which changes his trajectory and NEEDS to be blocked high. He cant bushin grab you standing from his normal jump. SPD overhead run BS. Low forward all day and stand strong. Ultra 2.

Gen is a footsie battle. If yours arent on point youre going to lose. Gens got great footsies, some of the best buttons and very underrated I feel. If you land a Jab SPD though it should be gg.

Hey guys, I am having new problem…Lame Ryu/Ken. Jump back fireball all day. I try to focus some and dash but as soon as they hit the corner they either neutral jump which I dont know what to do besides block, or jump flying tatsu out and repeat. What do?

fp.DP or cr.HP or df.LP
You can catch the air tatsu with U2 if u get the timing down.

PumpkinBomber, I think he means when you corner a shoto and you are a little bit out. A lot of times people just stand in the corner and NJ over and over because it beats nearly everything Hawk can do. I try and time a far ST RH or FP to at least trade with them in the air on the NJ. If you can trade, it can set up some mix-ups because they will usually try a reversal on wakeup, so you just block and punish. For the escape tatsu, right as they are about to cross over your head, hit MP. It can hit them as they cross over your head, and if it whiffs, there’s no repercussions.
