Backdash a lot seems to work. Guess right. You can react to meaty slides. Regular grabs on his wake up make him think twice about waking up with anything. If he ex runs out of a splash dont OS anything. Just let him run away. Turtle, be patient. Dont fall for obvious run stops to where they want you to jump to ex guac you or u2 you. Dont spire too much, u2 can punish it if its spaced wrong. You do so much damage and he does so little damage.
Fuerte is a random character. He presses a button and stuff happens. He makes shitty players look good. You can and will lose against fuertes but you can also limit the randomness
I’m going to stick with Hawk, but once I learn more DeeJay, I’ll probably switch Hawk to my sub and DeeJay as my main. (I’m completely dropping Fuerte because I want to use characters that aren’t only based on mix-ups)
Man that’s a shame man. I always thought you’re one of the better Hawks out there.
But I see where you’re coming from… most of the cast can easily lock him down. I’ll still be stubbornly repping him, though. Grapplers will always be my character.
Oh and I’ve noticed some people focusing my spire like you said . But I also note that EX Spire armor breaks. And whiffing lp spire into MT/Ultra is great if you expect them to.
You can TB all of his running dives (random) if you do it early. On wakeup, you have to
Dash back/front to avoid his splash dive (depends if he’ll cross up or not) and respond with a MT. Focusing works as well. Blocking will not allow you to punish. Jump/ late TB/blocking low will result in getting hit.
Jump to escape his fajita/tortilla and respond with a MT. Backdashing works as well if he does it from far away. Focusing/blocking will get you nailed.
Block his slide and MT in response. Dashing back is also a good way if timed right but if he delays you will be in trouble. Focusing also work if you cancel from the focus and throw him. Level 1 focus attack works as well but you must cancel to backdash or he will throw you on recovery otherwise. Jumping/blocking high will get you hit.
It’s to your advantage as you need only one good guess and cash in on wakeup. But if he lucks out you will be in trouble. Other tips, take your time, be on the defensive. And make sure not to jump at him as his EX antiair will hit you every time.
Started doing some work on wake up games vs some of the characters you can’t seem to mix up normally. Firslty I have focussed on Chun and Blanka:
Chun - You cannot safe splash her if she has meter…she always wins with ex sbk. Do the same safe jump timing with jump d.mp and her ex sbk whiffs and you can punish with spd accordingly during her recovery. As has been mentioned before, if she has no meter, safe splash is all good.
Blanka - Same as Chun that you cannot safe jump splash him after a lp spd…he is possibly the most un-mixupable character in the game imo. Same jump d.mp safe jump will leave you able to block any reversal he has and to add to the jokes you cross him up if he does wakeup electricity and the range on the block puts you at max range for lp spd (the range you can land it without getting electrified). If he does nothing try and take your chance to land damage while he realises he never blocked anything!
@ Gridman - I completely agree Hawk needs a fix, but like some of the other guys, he is the character I like most to play so I’ll stick with him too…and this coming from someone who could very easily stick with the main he had from Vanilla - Honda! If you want to get on in the tournament scene, then I can completely see why you have moved on. Really a case of what you want respect for at the end of the day - character master or good comp placings…both have their place and should be respected imo…and if you go top tier you can have both! I am probably going to be sorely disappointed, but I am also hoping with some fixes to the arcade version and the 99% guranteed console update, he will become much more viable and time invested in him will mean the best of both tournament viability and character guru. Right now though, I cannot see anyone winning a recognised comp the way he is designed and given the probability you will meet plenty of his bad match ups along the way.
Tanma, are you certain about Chunli and her spinning bird kick? I have actually beaten ex spinning bird kick with splash on multiple occasions (I fall directly on top of her, and she is knocked out of it, no trade whatsoever). I don’t play chunli’s very much; the times I have done it left a strong impression because EX spinning bird kick is ridiculous, and the Idea of it losing to splash makes me smile.
True. But I’m not good enough yet to do that consistently. So it’s more my own fault, but it still makes me salty I’ll read through this tread for tips, haven’t read more than the first page yet. Is it updated with everything in the thread or are there still some things left out? Akuma’s without a doubt my worst matchup. Even Sim ain’t as bad.
I just played a set against my areas best Fei player. I found out a couple of things. He liked to do chicken wings on his wakeup (due to him being in the air during chicken wings I’m assuming). If you’re playing a Fei and he gets into the habit of doing this, just OS a dp. It will beat the start-up of the chicken wing and get you just good damage. Other than that you really just have to play really well. Fei is tough. He has great normals and can keep good pressure with safe Rekkas.
im a hypocrite. i used hawk vs marlinpie and ryder on sunday and knocked marlinpie into losers and ryder out. was in WF, lost to my bro, waited till marlinpie had to play ryder, and they decided to throw their best shot against me and my brother (which they decided was ryder) and then knocked him out and my bro and i split 1st and second. i actually like hawk vs abel.
I think the match is pretty even, but Hawk does not have any clear advantage. Who ever gets the first command grab or untechable knockdown tends to have the advantage imo - Abel can mix you up really nicely if he gets it and with OS SPD off cross up splash, Abel has to take Hawks pressure if Abel is the one knocked down.
oh and regarding safe splash against chun’s EX spinning bird, it’s possible but the timing is extremely strict. the only time i attempt it is after landing jab typhoon. you have like a 2-3 frame time span to land an ambiguous crossup splash that literally beats EVERYTHING except for teleports. like, it even beats reversal uppercuts. but again, that’s only if you time it right, and if you fuck up then, yeah haha
and about hawk in general, i’m not gonna say that he’s even close to top tier, and yeah some matchups are just straight up stupid (blanka, chun, seth, akuma, DHALSIM) but overall i think he’s super viable. i’m sad to hear gridman is dropping him, but real talk, i think t hawk is better than zangief. i’m going into socal regionals with hawk, and i plan on doing well. i mean, i’m not a top player or anything and there’s no way i’d get top 8 no matter what character i play, but i honestly feel that he’s a solid character with great design, and the only “fix” i would demand would be that EX buster SHOULD NOT lose to any jump ins or instant overheads. have you guys seen this shit? ex buster loses to chun’s jumping roundhouse fucking clean in every situation. that shit is so stupid.
but anyways, haha my point is that hawk is good, and i will pwn noobs all day with meaty standing roundhouse
