I’m sorry, but it sounds like someone just came out of their xbox live cave and got raped at the arcade and thinks Ryu is horrible now.
Uh Makoto is looking like top tier atm… Daigo, Momochi, Tokido and Nemo have all commented on how strong she is, Momochi has picked her up and he is a SBO 3S winning Makoto, another SBO 3S winning Makoto in Shiro Itachi has picked her up too… has a 72 win streak with her and is the #2 in his region behind MDR’s Rufus…
Try it out yourself to believe it. I’m primarily an arcade player.
And really, I’m good with him. He’s just unusable now. Normally I would say fuck it. We can adapt the nerf. Not this time. It’s really bad this time round.
I’m sticking to easier charc like Fei. Maybe Yun when I get the chance to practice.
here are some of my AE matchup thoughts… if anyone has some info regarding these matchups, it would be cool to hear them.
guile matchup should be much better for ryu. guile got damage nerfs all around, so this ryu should have a much better time because he can take more risks. how do some people think that guile got stronger in this matchup?
blanka matchup should be better for ryu also - or at least the same. you guys were using attacking air tatsu vs blanka? if not, then what really changed here in favor of blanka?
fei long matchup already sucked in ssf4. it should be the same in this version. at least he lost some invincibility on hk chickenwing.
adon should be much better because you should be able to jump at him after cr.HK or a throw (easier to time). can anyone confirm this? who is adon’s wakeup time the same as?
sim got damage nerfs, but attacking air tatsu was pretty good against him. i dont know how this is going to play out. if i had to guess sim still has it better in this match.
cammy matchup is going to be much better. i actually thought this match was slightly in her favor in ssf4. now it should be even. she will have a harder time punishing pokes with cannon spike (she may not even be able to do it). does anyone know how easy it is for cammy to punish ryu cr.MK?
sakura might be even now because of her massive damage output when taking risks. but still very winnable. this matchup got worse.
makoto might end up being really tough for ryu similar to the way fei long is. too early to tell. this matchup will definitely be a lot tougher.
rog, will still be tough because of that damn cr.HK.
rufus, is much better because of his nerfs to U2.
m.bison should be better because of nerf to his U2.
Overall ryu will probably stay solid as he was in SSF4. i think daigo was talking very early about ryu’s weaknesses because ryu was already middle of the pack in super, and just looking at nerf to buffs - he will be middle of the pack in AE.
Oh, sorry. I didn’t realize every single one of us was whining. Thanks for this.
Fuck, the only thing I really hate about this forum are the whiners whining about the whiners. FUCK! That’s me too now! God damn you bitches
I’m not gonna abandon Ryu, but I can say for sure that my Gief, Mak, and Akuma are definitely getting more playtime than normal. Y’know, just in case.
Maybe Evil Ryu will bail us out of this.
I haven’t played ae yet, but if I understand the changes correctly, these should work
I think zoning out fei got a little easier now(though not by much)
HK chicken wing nerf means he doesn’t have easy answer to fireball when meterless
And idk what other ryus use, but I’ve been using st. mp to stop rekkas, and its been working out. Now ryu can buffer a tatsu when he throws out a st. mp in anticipation of a rekka, and if it hits, the tatsu will come out:)
I think rog will be harder because of the cr. mk nerf. Before you could throw out cr. mk OS tatsu in anticipation/reaction of a dash punch, that will be harder to do now, especially against lp dash straight cuz its too fast to react to.
But at least it will harder for him to sweep our cr. mk
Ryu is horrible now according to alot of pro players
KSK: How?s Ryu.
Hiropon: Ryu?s bad match ups have gotten nerfed, so maybe he has a chance?
Mago: Nah, he?s just average, probably weaker than before. The light Dragon Punch that he needed on wake up got weaker mid-air, and he needs fierce Dragon Punch for anti-air [I don’t know exactly what the Ryu changes are, so this part might not be accurate].
Itabashi: And he lost his runaway Air Hurricane.
Mago: Losing that is pretty huge. Is that about it?
Hiropon: C.MK got faster, and the active frames got 1 frame shorter. Isn?t that big for Zangief?
Mago: Even before that, he?s lost that match. He has no chance against Zangief.
Itabashi: SPD got more range, so he might be able to grab him from just outside of c.MK range.
Mago: There?s that, and he can?t get out of the corner anymore without Air Hurricane.
KSK: Really? So Ryu?s basically done in the corner?
Mago: In the corner. He?ll just block and block and then eventually die.
KSK: (laughs)
Itabashi: One thing I was wondering about. Umehara [Daigo] said that it was over for projectile characters. How so, exactly?
Mago: It is over. There?s way too many ways of getting around projectiles, and they can?t deal with it. So if at least Sagat doesn?t have good fireballs, it?s over for them
Gods Garden x 4Gamer Interview: AE First Impressions (2/2) Blog
Nice! Thx for that write up. So far most of the opinions of ryu havn’t dealt with how the changes can help or hurt match ups.
Overall it appears that ryu is worse because of the reasons stanzaa mentioned. The game is way more in your face offensive and they did not give ryu enough to compensate for it. Though I think other versions of street fighter ryu had more offensive options but they did not give it to him in this game.
Ill still be using him.
“Nah, he?s just average, probably weaker than before.” != “horrible”
Still, I can accept that Ryu’s zoning game may be effective against an even smaller percentage of the cast with the coming edition. (Not that that will stop any of the whining about projectile spam you consistently find on tourney vids featuring these kinds of characters.)
Players of Ryu will just have to adapt. This probably won’t mean that the number of Ryus representing at tourneys will go down drastically. The character is popular regardless. Though it might mean that those few exceptional Ryu players will be more likely to pack other characters on their tourney runs. This was already happening in Super, with someone like Eric Hai using Cammy to handle a few problem matchups and win a recent 70-man tourney in Toronto.
Ryu gets cornered too easily now without air tatsu. You are either forced to hold db while getting pressured or take a risk with dp and hope it hits them while they are trying to pressure you.
All in all ryu is not strong in this game.
you CAN’T zone out a good majority of the characters in this game since they have moves that go through it.
Gief and Thawk are gonna be harder for ryu because he has no escape out the corner so more pressure or command throws.
I think you guys will be fine in the end…grapplers will be tough for sure, though…hell anyone with corner pressure will be tough. But look at it this way…Sim, Guile, Rose and Rog got nerfed. If anything, I think Ryu will just have a ton of matches turn into 5-5s regardless of whether they were advantageous or disadvantageous for him.
I dont think there is anything to worry about. Yes ryu has changed slightly but im really looking forward to taking on these so called better characters. In a game as complicated as this, tiny changes can make a huge differences. The change in trajectory to x-up tatsu, quicker c.mk(on whiff), return of trade dp and some of his normals being improved means we have new things to learn, new tools to play with. By the time AE comes out on console, peoples views of players/moves/matchups will change and we’ll see who is sitting pretty on top of the tier list. what im saying is dont write off ryu just yet. If you dont like ryu ae then nobody is going to hold anything against you for switching to your 2nd/3rd char. I only use 1 char so i’ll be sticking.
Yea, I was just about to post that, too. Either way, I still think it’s to early to actually flip out about it and write off the character and the game permanently. Even if he is worthless now, it’s nothing to go crazy about. Learn a new character to win, and troll people with Ryu.
edit: I also wouldn’t be surprised if they sneak a few changes into the console release of AE. Nothing major, but if something doesn’t play out like they expect, they could change it. Like the first sf4 patch that took out infinites and nerfed lariat.
Ryu got nerfed. His buffs suck/are stupid. His bad matchups are still bad.
Guile - minimal damage nerfs
Fei - buffs, HK chicken wing nerf? srsly come on that’s a minor nerf.
Rose - U2 nerf
Dhaslim - minimal nerfs
Boxer - minimal nerfs
cammy - minimal nerf, interesting buffs cr.lp - sweep
His bad matchups stay bad. His previous good/decent matchups against makoto, ken, akuma, got worse. Throw in the twins and that only adds to the bad matchups. I’m not complaining about ryu’s nerfs i’m just perplexed as why they had to happen. Overall ryu got WORSE and his winning with him will be much harder against viable characters due to their significant buffs. IMO ryu will be mid-tier and the 3rd best shoto amongst akuma and ken. But I really hope someone out there proves me wrong…
Guile - his main ways of dealing damage in Super were nerfed - backfist, FK/FADC, 50% boom meter build, sonic hurricane sucks
Fei - welcome to new top tier, you’re right there.
Rose - RTSD, she has no wakeup options that are safe now
Dhalsim - going to be long, drawn out, difficult.
Boxer - we can’t st.jab you if you’re crouching now. Headbutt nerf, less mixup on KD, etc. should be the same overall 5-5.
Cammy - minimal nerf? sarcasm? no divekick pressure helps so much. she’s gotta get in, and it’s so difficult to stay in with her in AE.
Makoto… dunno really, will have to see.
Ken - major buffs, probably better than Ryu re: mixup/rushdown options
Akuma - hasn’t changed really.
Still Ryu will be able to win his matches, although some 4-6s across the “seemingly top tiers”: the twins, Fei, Grapplers.
Guile - the match up stays pretty much the same. Guile lost some damage on his normals/specials and builds less meter but hasn’t lost any tools to bring the matchup in ryu’s favor or to at least a 5-5. His zoning game is still superior to ryu’s. Also ryu in the corner is going to be A LOT better for guile. It’ll be just as hard to get in on Guile as it was before. Guile’s upward kick(?) now beats cr.techs I’m wondering if it’ll now beat ryu’s new cr.forward, that would be pretty big to me.
Rose - She has no wake up options but her zoning tools and footsies are still superior.
Boxer - cl.st.mp into easy combos…i’m sure boxer would take that over st.jab hitting crouching opponents any day.
Cammy - she still has divekick pressure, they’ve just changed it so that only the EX version can be executed earlier. Her normals have also gotten a major buff. Srsly cr.lp into sweep onto mixups? I heard she also got normal buffs…
Akuma - ryu does less damage now and his cr.forward isn’t as good. Footsies suddenly become more even at this point (this is major) I see this matchup being closer to a 5-5 than a 6-4 now
Zangief - OMG did you see that lp SPD buff? That’s all I gotta say.
I’m just trying to be realistic about the changes that have happened. Ryu ain’t horrible but he got worse. Like Azproc said 4-6 amongst the seemingly top tiers…ouch
LOLOl woooow i thought i was the only one who thought ryu is the 3rd best shoto
I dont see whats so bad about ken in super or ae… His shoryuken’s way better, hes got way better mixups, its just his zoning im assuming? Someone prove me wrong or am i missing something? LOLLO. and akuma is akuma… nuff said
Someone in Japan said that Ken was the best outta the 3.
I still don’t get why people say that Ryu had bad matchups in Super. He had 0 bad matches, just a lot of 5-5s. He couldn’t dominate anyone but still won.
AE is a different story.
Sim got minimal nerfs but a huge buff since now its hard to cross him up since they buffed up ex yogatower like I had posted. I played Arturo, tried the regular stuff. (Jump lk, crossup tatsu, jump FP), I got either a trade or got beaten out cleanly with yoga tower. Now its harder to pressure him.
I honestly thought akuma would still be good. I didn’t read any nerfs except the obvious air tatsu nerf on him also.
Because I play some of these characters:
Guile - You can chuck plasma faster than he can, and you’ll build EX faster. Upside Down Kick isn’t OP and is still slow. Don’t see any disadvantage on paper for either; the sole fact Guile does less damage makes this more even/favoured for Ryu. How is he going to walk Ryu into the corner? His rushdown is mediocre at best. Ryu still has crossup tatsu
Boxer - umm… I’d much rather have a nice st.lp back, not for this matchup particularly but Abel, Zangief come to mind. As well, the BnB into headbut AE does like no damage now. Nothing ground-breaking with cl.strong; makes him more aggressive than downback, jab, short, headbutt though. Mixups!
Cammy - keep her out. Have you seen the height restriction on CStrike to make it easy to react to and punish? She may as well not have that move. Zone her out… she has terrible footsies. Where is she getting that EX? And EX is limited… not like that unlimited CStrike pressure of before. Strangely they buffed her game where she was already strong - up close. I mean if you let her in… you were done anyway.
Zangief - the buff is good, but he’s got no KD on EX-GH. I’m really starting to believe the buff is made so it can grab pokes more easily. Seems huge but getting into that range is difficult. In the Ryu matchup I can see how it would be pretty good though if he walks you into the corner.
Can’t be asked really. Read the Ken forums.
For really TLDR - worse footsies/ground game, no DP FADC Ultra, crappy fireball in a zoning-dominated defensive game.
