SSF4 AE 2012 Guile Video Thread: Return to Respectability

Alright! Here are all my SCR vids in order. Check em out.

This was my first match against a cody. Was still warming up and I missed a ton of reversals. Didn’t matter too much in the end.

Jayce beat me pretty hard, but I think I could have taken him if I was a bit more studied on the matchup. It’s a much better MU for Vega, so I gave that a go, but I was just too unfamiliar with the matchup. I might have done better sticking with Guile, but I’ve been working Vega into my game pretty hard lately, so I felt like I needed to give him a try, for better or for worse.

Nice guy. He didn’t know the matchup too well, but Makoto / Guile isn’t very good for Makoto even if you DO know the matchup.

This was the scariest match that I actually won. The Guy matchup feels really… weird. I forgot a lot of stuff too. AAing him is difficult, but there were times where I just didn’t try and should have. It also took me too long to start focussing his slides, but that may have been a blessing in disguise.

I trained hard leading up to SCR, and one of the things I found about myself was that my in-game anger would get in the way of my gameplay. 2 months ago, if I got hit with an ultra like he did to my s.hk here, I would have lost right then and there. I was able to keep a clear head and play smart though for the rest of the match.

Crispy.

Dat upside down kick. It makes this match seriously lopsided. When he switched to U2 I knew he was done.

I was already feeling crisp on the chun matchup from the last guy, so I was super on point here. Plus there was groovy music playing. Seriously, that UDK… He was having stick problems that day, so he had some execution errors with his ibuki. I was worried about going up against any Ibuki, and I feel I got lucky here.

Last match to get out of pools. This guy knocked Kineda into losers too. Either way, I was not on my bison game the first match. I let him get away with a lot of dashes and unsafe stomps. I wasn’t about to drive 11 hours to lose to a bison though. The matchup really is THAT BAD. Xonic boom > fierce. Don’t even bother with backfist.

Finally, Gamerbee is quickly becoming my tournament demon. I did a lot better against him than I did at Evo, a feeling that I can attribute largely to my footsies. But Gamerbee… his footsies are just too GOOD! I know where I need to improve though. SO back to the grindstone.

Great vids! Solid play all over the place. The Guy player was a bit lacking in pressure and had rather poor air presence I thought. Your AA was on point there so it probably discouraged him even further. I have alot of trouble with some local Guy players that are actively flying all over the place and body you for touching any buttons in the corner. I love using that UDK trick on Chun, it feels good when you land it and if the Chun doesn’t know about then it screws with their head. I thought you did a great job of staying outside of range to avoid stray sweep knockdowns from Chun which is something I still get hit by all the time. Nice approach to fighting Gamerbee too, it’s difficult to learn how to fight effectively without being able to sonic boom freely.

loved the medium kick at the end vs gouken that was perfectly spaced. i suck so i have nothing to say other than i gotta get a lot of this stuff into my game! i like how you use the st HP you get a lot of damage with that.

that match vs bison was sick i am going to look to that as a resource for all the ways to keep bison out!

Just wanted to add that the other day I was a repeat victim of the trick when Bison does headstomp in the corner then flies behind you after the bounce (sticking to the wall). After blocking the headstomp, it looks like you can anti-air him with 2hp but it will actually whiff and get you punished so I started trying 5hk and it actually seems to be the best button to press here. Did it twice and it hit him no problem so seems like a specific scenario worth remembering.

I like s.lp in that situation. Minimum reward, but completely unpunishable and wins 99% of the time.

Sup Guys,

Twitch link of me playing casuals / tourney below. Any advice in my play-style would really help - Thx.

In general, you are too patient. Which, as problems go, is a pretty great problem to have if you are a Guile player. The issue is though, is that nothing really comes out of your patience. You’ll sit on a down-back charge and not do anything for 3 seconds, only for someone to jump at you and you won’t AA them. In general, you need to focus more on your AA game. Play around with all your buttons. Also, if you can safely throw a boom, then there’s usually no reason not to.

Against makoto in her dash range, throw a boom and then throw some c.lp’s. If they focus dash, they will dash into your light attacks and you can combo off them. If they jump, AA them. If they block, throw another boom. It’s this kind of general “think ahead” kind of strategy that would really help your game out.

Nemesys - I saw your set against VolcanicAkuma on youtube. Did he do something that confused you, or did he just have your number that particular day?

I felt extremely heavy and latent that night. I usually move and react faster than what happened that night. My mistake was probably that I didn’t warm up at all and just jumped into the fight cold handed.

I feel you on that. It makes a huge difference when the eyes and hands feel even a touch slow.

I see what you mean Slinkun, I’ve been having problems with the makoto matchup lately so I’ll try out this strategy - thx.

please help my guile, just started a little while ago with him (Honda main) thanks!

I only watched the first few vids and you don’t have good fundamentals and most of your dmg comes from random FKs and a little bit from pokes which are thrown out whenever in range hoping to hit the opponent rather than to net a favourable position.

Also, you don’t AA your opponent when he jumps over a boom except for backfisting far jump-ins and you always put yourself in disadvantageous positions for Guile e.g continuously walking back while throwing booms when you’re already at safe range or at Guile’s optimal range = giving up space.

Play the game for 3 months with no wakeup FKS, no FKs in the middle of opponent’s blockstrings and random FKs. And then start to incorporate them into your game with smart thinking. Random dmg won’t improve you as a player regardless of who you main.

There’s like an 80% chance you will do a FK on wakeup or in between a blockstring and that’s a serious problem.

U2 is for AAing jump-ins, punishing fbs and blocked reversals/ultra etc. I don’t understand why your wana throw it out at 3/4 or full screen.

Sry if I sound like an asshole. I just hope to get the point across.

its ok lol i can accept criticism i know i am shit so i want to improve

the best advice you gave me was i need to AA better post boom and i keep walking backwards. in my mind they are too close but you are saying that is actually a good postion for guile to be in. I need to get a bit more comfortable playing up close.

i think i am using the pokes in the right spacings but i dont believe random is the best word for what I am doing, I would say they are just too obvious. i am basically always using the pokes at max range as soon as i enter the space. i need to mix up the buttons i am pressing and the spacings i am pressing them at, and then also mix up not pressing anything at all.

Mike - your FKs are essentially random. You are usually guessing or predicting that your opponent won’t be blocking when you do them. This leads to a lot of punishes. The risk-reward isn’t worth it. If your guess is correct half the time, you are delivering 100-ish damage when correct, but taking a 200+ damage punish when you’re wrong. Sometimes you have to make a “get off me” statement with a random FK or wakeup FK once in a while, but random and guess FKs are not a viable general strategy because of this tradeoff.

I like Rexell’s advice to cut out wakeup FKs entirely for a period of time and learn to fight without them, then incorporate them more intelligently later on. I am going to do this.

Guessing/random FKs should be entirely out of your strategy unless you need to make a statement and make your opponent respect your space more.

alright i am going to do another episode this week we’ll see how i do ill try and make some improvements on the fk’s

Work on increasing your charge timing on sonic booms. Like this…(Yes, I’m showing off…rofl)
