SSF4 AE 2012 Guile Video Thread: Return to Respectability

Yah, I could never get wiggle block to work either. Plinking wakeup normals has been my most successful option so far. That wakeup c.mp post Abel tornado throw has saved me a lot of trouble in that MU.

Here’s a new video from Ryu apprentice showcasing some unblockables for Ryu. There’s 3 setups off Ryu’s U1 that works on Guile in the corner I didn’t put in my unblockable vid. I’ll test out Guile’s escapes later on. I’m sure it’s the same as all the others.

EDIT: OK, I got to test out these 3 unblockable setups with Ryu. They are…

  1. grounded U1 > wiff far s.hk > wait 1-2 frames > j.hp
  2. juggle U1 > wiff dash forward > wiff c.mp > wait 1-2 frames > j.hp
  3. juggle U1 > wiff dash forward > wiff dash forward > j.hp

#3 is the easiest to perform since you don’t have to wait between frame kills. All 3 of them are defeated in the exact same way since Ryu uses the same normal attack for the unblockable hit.

Here’s how Guile can defeat all of these unblockables. Some are easer to do than others like the diagonal jump, dash forward, c.mp.

neutral jump (wiffs)
jump canceled diagonal jump(with attacks if you want)
dash forward (wiffs)
focus attack (wiffs)
jump canceled FK (hits)
jump canceled SB
jump canceled super (hits)
jump canceled U1/U2
close s.lp (wiffs)
close s.lk (wiffs)
close s.mp (wiffs)
close s.mk (wiffs)
close s.hp (wiffs)
close s.hk (wiffs)
close f+hk (wiffs)
f+hp (wiffs)
c.lp (wiffs)
c.mp (wiffs)

I normally would not post videos in srk but I think this is an enjoyable watch. FT7 casual set between xWAx Vortex and me.

Dude, you really need to stop trying to be cute in this matchup. It’s a very bison-esque kind of match, to where so long as you zone him properly, there isn’t much he can do outside of a lucky EX slide guess. All of these little b.lk tricks, jump ins, and random flashkicks are only hurting you. Guile pressure is a lot of fun, but sadly, just about everyone else does pressure better.

Just for example, if Cody ever corners you, knocks you down, and proceeds to cross you up, just back away and use that tasty, tasty real estate he just gave you. Going in for a bunch of pressure is just asking to get re-re-crossed up and having a great opportunity lost.

I’d say, your damage was 65%ish zoning based and 35% close shenanegin based, maybe even worse. The zoning is genuinely 95% risk free. Throw a boom, toss a couple jabs to catch a focus dash forward, AA if he jumps, throw another boom. Maybe a backfist every once and awhile.

Also, punish all blocked criminal uppers with HK or EX flashkick if you have charge or s.hp if you don’t. Too many missed opportunities.

The 60 / 40 Rule… never thought of it that way. 60 % zoning and 40 % shenanigans.

Good Shit!

You’re right Slinkun. I just happened to play a Cody at Next Level earlier tonight. It’s funny because I didn’t even try to be cute. All I did was run away and throw booms like crazy. I throw all my cute little shenanigans out the door when I’m playing in tournaments.

Also, I won against the Cody player 2-1 and did the same exact thing against an Oni as well.

Can someone explain what Nuckledu is doing at 2:03 and 2:38? I don’t get it … Thx in advance!

Looks like he tried setting up fake cross up setups.

EDIT: how do i make a video appear in post not just the url ?

apologies if its seen already but cant help to not post. I really dont dig his red focus animation. wanted it to be some kind of bigger firearm explosion ;/

Alright @Slinkun, I’m revisiting the Cody match up. Only this time with pure zoning and patience involved. Tips and suggestions are welcomed.

Excellent stuff. Very smooth. Your AA choices were making me rock hard. Still a bit of walking a forward and a random flashkick, but your hitting all the right notes.

Always wondered how much life would drop if I was able to hit st.hp x 3 on someone. The results made my jaw drop.

Trying to get used to using Close Standing Hard Kick as an Anti Air.

I like cl.st.hk, wish it wasn’t so finicky to judge when it’ll come out. I find it’s really useful against Blanka’s jumps (and crossups).

Critic mah Guile plz

I see a LOT of mistake(Most notably:[details=Spoiler]

which cost me two or three rounds.) but I’m not going to say anything so yall can give it to me straight.

Woops! Missed one

First off, thanks for posting losing vids. It takes a lot of humility to do that when looking to improve.

Only watched the first couple vids so far, and I think there are two primary things you need to focus on.

First is your basic sonic boom > anti-air game needs a bit of improvement. Always remember that sonic boom is the best projectile in the game, and it is that way for a reason, to use it! If there’s one thing you take away from this, it’s that next time you play try to focus EXCLUSIVELY on throwing booms and AA’ing with either c.hp or s.mk. There are a few times when, for example, you will be sitting on a down charge looking to flashkick something or walking forward into footsie range without actually doing much with footsies (which is hard enough online as it is). Instead of doing that, just throw more booms. A good example would be when you would block gen’s c.hk. You would always just sit there or walk back or walk forward. If you threw a boom in that situation, Gen couldn’t do anything about it. A jump would get hit with c.hp, and a focus dash could get bopped by c.lp > c.mp xx flashkick/boom.

However, your success with booms will only be as good as your ability to AA people after you throw one. Really focus on just sticking with using c.hp and s.mk for awhile and completely omit AA flashkicks, s.hp, or s.mp from your game for awhile. Those two buttons, c.hp and s.mk are the most consistent AAs that Guile has, and getting comfortable with them is the first step to becoming good with Guile.

One of the things that makes booms so good, and projectiles in general, is that they control space. Once you throw out a boom and recover, you only have two things to worry about… First, did they jump? Second, did they go through it? They can’t walk forward, and if they block it doesn’t really concern you (throw another boom!) but those are the two things you really genuinely need to “worry” about.

The first one, the jump, is fairly straight forward, but you DO have to make a couple of brain checks. Firstly and most importantly, do you actually have TIME to AA them. If they jumped at about the same time you threw the boom, it will be unlikely that you will be able to beat them clean, and you may even get stuffed. The only way to get the kind of intuition to know whether to block or AA can only come with time, practice, and trial and error. So if you are playing casually ALWAYS try to AA until you get a fee lfor things. Secondly, you need to figure out the best button for the range they are jumping at. If they are above you, go to c.hp. If they are a touch further, so for a s.mk. If they are super far and trying to just get a “safe” jump to gain some space, go for a backfist or charge up for another boom.

OK… that took longer than I thought.

Anyways, the second thing I was going to mention is punishes. You need to learn to get quicker at punishing certain oddball things and other more straightforward things. Most of this will come with time and experience, but here are some examples:

When Gen whiffed the EX walljump in your face, you could have bopped him with s.hp
Anytime Evil Ryu did a tatsu over your head, you could have done an immediate c.mp, or waited until he hit the ground and combod him.
All of Juri’s pinwheels are flashkick punishable. If you don’t have charge, c.mp will work in a pinch too.
If you block a shoryu, don’t just flashkick. At least get the c.mp in there first, or preferably do df.hk > flashkick.

Anyways, I really hope this helped!

Yo Guile Fam!

Below is a twitch link of me playing causals this past weekend.

Starts between 50:00 - 1:13:18 on this link - http://www.twitch.tv/cpsiv/b/505376266

I played ; El Cubano Loco (Vega) , Random but solid Gouken and Julio (Yun). I lost to Julio’s Yun which I usually do, but I slip-in win’s here/ there if my defense is on my A-game.

So I ask humbly to critique on these points if possible:

  • Any consistent bad habits you see in my play-style?
  • Any specific Match-Up knowledge I should be using against the characters I mentioned above?
  • And lastly, how does one adapt quicker during a match?

I stress to ask my last point because I believe I adapt quicker during casual game play, but definitely not during a tournament.

Please feel free to critique anything else you see - much appreciated!

Aaaaaaahhh! Dude I’m so sorry for late ass reply D:.

Thank you for for taking the time to type all that out, it really appreciated. I’m usually on/off with this game but I’ll practise my aa game, it’s seems to be my weakens as a players because I can’t aa for the life of me regardless of what character I us.:\

Hyuck, hyuck!
