I wasn’t thinking of Gief so much. You can’t really pressure him. I was thinking of that Dudley where you tossed him in the corner repeatedly and proceeded to walk back the entire length of the screen each time.
Me vs Vegita-X
some pretty sub-par play from both of us (missed links, poor reactions and decisions at times) but I think I played it well despite how bare bones I played it.
- its all about me nailing double fierce, but missing jab jab fierce
- I was definitely playing retarded with all that cr. rh in the end
- that ultra setup after knockdown is something I get hit by…every time. its so obvious and I am a scrub.
- some of those booms were MAD unsafe…and appropriately punished lol
- the reason why he wasn’t lariating through booms is because Ive mastered backfisting him out of lariat from far away (so that he takes the boom and the counter hit backfist)

Word, I need to work on my pressure a lot.

(Accidentally posted in the vanilla thread. Reposting in proper thread.)
i feel as though the strongest aspect of my game is corner pressure, so let me give you some advice -
when you are playing someone casually online and you’ve figured out you’re better than them, play in complete rush down mode (even if this means your defensive side becomes weaker and you give them more chances than you would normally). throw lots so you can get them into the corner as close as possible. from here go for some 5/6/7 hit corner combos. mix with some jump ins to start the combo and some target combos so your strings don’t get too obvious.** do not** worry about mash srk/360/whatever, just go for it.
it’s all very well doing them in training. i promise you this is the best way to get confident with your corner game.

Just trying to get back into Street Fighter again, as I have now learned to never lend video games… so I’m pretty much starting new (had but lent SF4, never played any SF 3 series, got more into the air combo SF games).
Love playing as Guile though, and do enjoy the SF series even though I’m not some nerd pro taking every “fight” to heart! Don’t know much but I do try to copy what other Guile players have done… critique away as any information is valuable, I’m certain there’s plenty I can work on:
I only watched the first match so far, I’ll watch the others and re-edit this post. But overall that Rufus player was pretty bad. Why? He wasn’t really using him properly or paying attention to your movements. Had he been paying attention, he would have GT’d your b.MKs everytime giving him a free corner advantage. To me, and this is just my opinion, you were just moving after sonic booms, and not respecting Rufus option. He could have done a lot of thigs like a delayed dive kick, df.mk, galatic tornado, or a well timed j.HP. This Rufus didn’t use Rufus ridiculous specials which aids him in his anti-footsy game. Better Rufus know how to punish whiffs, and you were doing unsafe whiffs at unsafe ranges all throughout the match. You also weren’t really baiting jump-ins, and throwing booms at some pretty questionable ranges. I’m not saying your Guile is bad, he was decent. But less is more with Guile. You don’t need to followup every boom with something, since none of it is particularly safe. And overall it makes your zoning very predictable. If that Rufus wanted to psychic jump you, he could have, and there wouldn’t have been shit you could do about it.
Against the Balrog player, I guess you played the match okay. That Balrog wasn’t very good either way. He was really impatient, which is normally a death sentence in the Guile matchup. You didn’t really punish him, you just got lucky he was hitting buttons after doing unsafe stuff. Also, you absolutely have to stop hitting buttons on wakeup. I mean do not hit a mother fucking thing if you get knocked down. I saw you wake up with sweep, which seems to be something beginners do a lot in SFIV, I’m not really sure why. Stop doing this, it’s a really bad habit. I can stress enough, don’t do anything on wakeup against Balrog. Really good ones have some nasty frame traps that can really ruin your day. You should just block, wait for a jump, his jab option select, and a throw. waking up with anything against Balrog just isn’t going to cut it.
Against Ibuki. too much low jabbing, too many jumpins, too many badly spaced sonic booms. autocorrect sonic hurricane to stop crossup kunai was nice, I gotta use that. Sorry, too good not to use. Other than that, you are a walking bag of whiff punishment. Too much traget combo spam, way too many jump ins, and totally no respect for Ibuki’s wakeup option. Again, you simply made bad decisions versus bad players and it paid off. Seeing as Ibuki can kill you in one knockdown, and you left tons of gaps in your game. For one, you jumped in way too much. If that Ibuki was smart she would have cr.mped you, a dash cancable move. From the she could have started a really good ambigious crossup kuni mixup game which could have lead to a vortex, which would have resulted in death for you. cr.jab is good versus Ibuki, but only to a degree. You have to be aware of her fast focus attack and good backdash. And you were just asking for a backdash, slide frame trap doing that. You have to stop pressing so many buttons, good players are going to eat you up everytime you whiff.
The Blanka match was horrible. Luckily again for you the Blanka player was bad. Had he not been he could have slid you to death. He could have started his st.jab pressure strings, or jab electricity cancels. Then he could have started his crossup shennigans on you. And he would have been good for it, as you weren’t doing anything to avoid these situations. While it appears you love your j.hk, target combo, and your cr.mk on wakeup, these are just bad options. Players who actuallly block, backdash, and have good defense are just going to notice this, and fuck you up for all that careless button pressing and sloppy jump-ins.
I noticed in all of your matches you walk back to throw sonic booms, you almost never throw out light ones either, and you waste a lot of ex meter for no reason. You have to start thinking about conservation in a lot of matchups. That ex meter is valuable, and being able to pull a super off in dire situations like vortex’s is a matter of life and death. The worst thing you can do is walk back while zoning. you have to practice charge buffering, and develop a rhythm for throwing sonic booms. If not better players are just going to murder you. You definitely have to start realizing that the more buttons you press, the higher probability is of you being countered and knocked down. You really want to avoid this, because this is never a good situation for Guile to be in.
Overall, you’re off to a good start. Just keep practicing, and eventually it will all come together. Guile is a character who is very simple at first glance, but once you realize the work needed to make him effective, he will seem really hard. But overall, just stick with it and keep posting up so we can see your progress
socal stuff
Heh, I wasn’t expecting such a detailed response Awesome advice though, I apreciate the honesty. Good points: I don’t often respect the wakeup game of other players, and I still don’t know how to deal with certain characters (ibuki/rufus/viper) or what moves to watch for, which is why I often do terrible things in the eyes of a pro. Could be just the framerate of the camera I film with, but I do use light sonic booms all the time… by the way, what exactly is an ‘option’? I’m also guessing a ‘whiff’ is an opportunity to punish after a move misses? Meh, I’ll look it up.
I do waste the super bar though I’ll admit, and I have definitely been spanked by better players (and I mean SPANKED!), but I dunno, sometimes the jab keeps me from getting thrown, and I play on a controller which doesn’t always make doing combos easy. Gotta quit the force of habit moves though definitely, as it has cost me several matches.
I’ll get back to re-reading your reply later, as I’m in class currently, but thaanks for the response man, much appreciated.

Ya, I’m really starting to wonder when they are going to apply the SSF4 update to the arcades out here.
Do expect to see a TON more vids than usual once super comes out though. Americans are more open about playing who fits your style, but the Japanese are all about tier whoring and playing the percentages. Tier whoring is a little strong. However, whenever I went to the arcades out here during Vanilla, it was 75% Ryu, Sagat, Akuma and 25% everyone else.
Anyways, I really hope I’ll be in port long enough to be able to take some good super footage, but I doubt I’ll be in much.
I heard super hits arcade in October.
