SSF4 AE 2012 Guile Video Thread: Return to Respectability

Here’s my top 64 match

Here is a old good match against Aquasilk.

I’m aiming for the number 1 European spot. I’m currently number 5

Well, here’s some things if you’re shooting for that ranking.

  • Punishes. A throw to punish EX greenhand is a good choice if you’re going for the backthrow due to the space, but if you’re going to stay on your side of the screen, just c.mp xx flashkick with charge or double s.hp without. Gief’s sweep is safe at most ranges, but if he does the longer sweep (df.hk) then that’s -11 and can be punished with a sweep of your own. If he does a normal sweep, doing a c.mk to push him back out is a smart move normally.

  • Footsies. Going back to the sweeps, you let him get away with too many. If you see him whiff a big button like that, be ready to counter-sweep it.

  • Combos. If you land a jump in on anyone, especially if you saw them whiff something big like a lariat or fireball or SPD, etc., don’t fiddle around with weak links that combo into s.hp or c.mp xx boom. If you see that big whiff then just stick with j.hk > c.mp xx flashkick. Substitute a df.hk with the c.mp if you get a deep jump in. Otherwise, in a hit confirm scenario, start comboing in to flashkick, not boom. Even if you aren’t 100% on your link timing, it’s important to practice your most damaging option. Also, if you mess it up, you can block confirm it into an FADC back, which is also important to practice in the heat of a real match.

@Slinkun thanks for the advice about sweeps and combos. I am combing into flash kick more consistently now.

My first lucky victory against an A+ Ken.

My first Win vs an A+ Ken,

IMO:
THE GOOD: Ultra for cheap dmg at 1:48 forced ken to rush up a response.

THE BAD:
Not punushing missed Shoryukens properly, throw is too weak, It should be at least (df.hk -> FK)

  • Walking back way too much* Slinkun
  • Tons of missed opportunities to AA with c.hp or s.mk *Slinkun
  • Hold your ground and throw more light booms. *Slinkun

THE UGLY: I’m not sure what really happened at 2:43, as Ken didnt punish my failed FK. He had a Ultra stoked so the match could have gone a different way. Oh well…

Please help me to identify additional good, bad and ugly aspects of this game.

Thanks Slinkun for your comments, I’ve added them to the BAD section!

I don’t think the video you linked is the one you are describing. However, in the video you did link, I see three big bad gameplay problems.

You are walking back way too much and giving up way too much ground. Hold your ground and throw more light booms.

You are also consistently not anti-airing. This kind of ties in to the first point. There were tons of missed opportunities to AA with c.hp or s.mk.

Finally, punishing a heavy DP with throw? Very weak. You need to bop it with at least df.hk > backfist.

Thanks a lot for your comments,

Just a comment, I cant hit with backfist after df.hk other than in the corner… not sure if im doing something wrong. At mid screen I have more luck with df.hk -> FlashKick.

I have problems AA’ing with c.hp, and im working to incorporate it more. and yes, the punish is way too light, ill try the df.hk > backfist as suggested… thanks!

And yes, i mixed the comments of another video… It’s fixed now /shame /lulz

This is why I love Oni’s air Ultra

Got some replays from Saltfest.

Me vs. xks Samurai’s Ryu @1:00:00 and 1:42:00. This is street fighter at it’s finest with some great zoning battles and even better adaptation skills on his part.

The day two stuff isn’t up yet it seems, or at least I can’t find it. I lost a close set to 801 Strider’s Abel and had to play iPeru in losers. Lost my first match with Guile and then switched to my budding secondary vega and scraped a win. Played a Rufus named wreckage and then lost to Wong immediately after. I’ll keep my eye out for those vids.

Ah… it’s a little roundabout but if you go here: http://www.dedra-sc.com/twitch.php

… you can see the tourney matches.

WARNING Terrible commentary. It was also played over speaker, so we could hear everything. SO, while I was playing, I got to hear the voice of Wesker talk about getting boners from Betty White.
Mine are at 5:08 vs. Strider, 6:17 vs. Wreckage then Wong.

I only watched the first Ryu match. I think you should work on whiff punishing c.mks. A key tool in this matchup as Ryu can just keep whiffing it and Guile would lose if he tries to counterpoke, unless Guile uses sweep to trade.

Ryu’s empty jump c.mk > fb. I have been encountering this from Ryus too. Another point as in any matchup imo is to mixup grounded AAs and air to air AAs. If it’s a little further, you can also walk back and whiff punish the c.mks. Airthrow also works for slightly nearer ranges as well as blocking and trying to throw the c.mk when he’s near.

I have a few offline matches against NuckleDu’s Guile/Akuma and Cammy. Unfortunately, the recording isn’t keeping the sound for some reason. I’ll post them up shortly.

Most definitely. A lot of middle-of-the-run Ryu players don’t realize just how strong the mixup is between empty jump > c.mk and j.hp at the right ranges. As for punishing c.mk, that’s a tall order. Less because it’s improbable and more because my reactions are just absolute butt. That and a late or bad sweep is a lot less safe than for a lot of the cast makes real footsies something I don’t like to go for too often. I missed some good U2 opportunities too.

I did wind up getting 5th at Saltfest though, so that’s good.

Need that good ole critique guys lay them shits on me.

Against honda, you were doing a lot of things wrong. You need to start anticipating when he is going to buttslam and AA’ing it with close s.hk or c.hp. You let him get away with way to much. Next, don’t be afraid to jump at him if a boom is already on screen in anticipation of a jump from him. Bopping him with a j.hk or an air throw if you can, is a lot better than risking grounded AAs, and if you land an air throw you get that sweet screen positioning. This is a factor vs. gief too. Finally, never never never jump at honda while he has a back charge. I can not believe that Henry was not punishing you with a headbutt every single time you jumped at him.

Against gief, right off the bat, I’m still not sure why you are doing those random EX flashkicks when he isn’t even at a threatening range. You should only flashkick when you are close enough to FADC the thing, or it just isn’t worth it. I’m not even saying FADC every random flashkick, but only do it when they are at a threatening range. Otherwise, just keep poking with s.hp and stuff. I really like df.hk to punish lariats when at range. Even if you are out of range to juggle a backfist afterwards, it knocks him back really well and gives you time to charge a boom. Up close, I like the option of waiting to flashkick or s.hp rather than sweep though, because I really don’t like the range that sweep puts you on his wakeup. It worked out for you that time, but you were really playing with fire going for walk up throws on his wakeup. ESPECIALLY at the end of the second match. You got him in the corner and then did a walk up throw. I couldn’t have pictured a worse decision. You got all that space to work with and could have safely chipped him out with booms but you went for the extremely risky, unnecessary option. Oh, keep looking for air throws in this match when you think he is getting frustrated, and AA U2 is great too, if a bit impractical online.

Always remember that you can backhand punish Honda’s hp headbutt on stand block. EX headbutt also.

EDIT: I believe all of Honda’s headbutts are backhand punishable on stand block?

Noted. but the EX flash kick was a mistake i remember doing that one by mistake…the geif match-up i am SLOWLY learning how to win it…i somewhat think i am coming along just fine. With the geif matchup i am sooooooo worried about gett grabbed i kinda panic when he is near me and shit. how the hell do i stop the damn boot to my face? he kept hitting me with everytime and i honesty didnt know what to do…

I believe that b+mk stuffs Gief’s jump mk (if you’re not in the corner).

EDIT: Far st.mp AA’s Gief’s jump mk.
