SSF4 AE 2012 Guile Video Thread: Return to Respectability

Have you ever gotten the sense that after playing online scrubs for so long, your own skill level goes down the shitter? It takes someone to beat you to make you realize: hey, I need to start doing something. Tactics against scrubs don’t work!. Took a Sakura player to beat me twice to make me realize that. He wasn’t that great of a Sakura player, but he still stole 2 from me. lol

I’m so ashamed of this video, I have to let you all see and make fun of me. lol

But I will also agree taht the #1 US PSN Claw wasn’t that… good.

I think you got too aggressive versus this Sakura. You jumped in a little too much, and didn’t really try to hold your ground with just solid zoning. I noticed it wass rare for you to throw more than 3 or 4 sonic booms before you would just jump in. As a result, you kind of beat yourself in some of those matches, as Sakura generally wants you to get close. Sakrua isn’t a slouch who has no anti-air or defensive options. She may not have a DP, but she does have a cr.FP which has a really good hitbox and clean beat a lot of weird jump ins it doesn’t look like it should. This Sakura wasn’t that great, but he at least know some of her options, and as a result he was able to beat you twice. Had it been an even better Sakura, she could have just crossuped you up, scored a few knockdowns, and got you into her little mini vortex, which is pretty hard to escape.

I would say work on staying grounded, and work on finding different ways to set up baits through sonic booms. A lot easier said than done, and very matchup dependent too. But overall Guile’s zoning game is complex, so it takes awhile to master it. I’m still working on it in a lot of matchups, as I’ve found out pretty much how to zone fatties, shotos and Sagat. I still have my own problem with bulldogging rushdown characters like Cammy and Fei-Long. Especially Fei-Long since there are so few solid ones, and he seems to have a few trick to close the distance.

Oh and wakeup flashkicks are just bad. I use to have this habit bad in vanilla, which I only broke completley the beginning of this year. It was a habit that carried over from my hyper fighting and ST days. And playing ST on GGPO this was pretty effective. I went into vanilla with this bad habit, and it’s something I gradually learned to break. Some times, and I know we all hate to hear it, you just have to BLOCK, and get good on teching throws. I know we don’t want to hand the momentum over to the other guy, but sometimes with a defensive character like Guile, it’s really the only safe option. Not sure how your blocking is in general, but if it’s a little off, or if you’re afraid to do it, just work on blocking and seeing moves on reaction. Not so easy online I know, but really important in Guile’s game in the log run.

Thanks for the feedback.

I know myself that I give FK more credit than it deserves. It’s a bad habit that’s hard to break. GAH… need smarter meter usage and use it to GTFO.

Needs moar patience and blocking. Gotcha.

Nemesis uploaded a couple more of my vids. I would like some feedback on the dhalsim match up more than anything(there are 2 vids). I lose close to 50% to him.
In my channel you can also find vs (sakura, ryu, blanka, juri, boxer, guy, guile)

I still save a ton of meter just for focus canceling Flash Kicks. Never a bad idea.

You know what I noticed about a lot of guile’s fighting dhalsim? NO ONE FUCKEN USES ST. MP WHEN SIM GOES TO THE AIR TO USE STRETCHY ARMS. Shit works so well if you throw out a uppercut MP, it beats sim’s stretchy arms clean. I’ve been doing that since ST and it still works in SF4.

I use that also to punish his straight arm, I like to switch from s.hp and s.mp.

I throw that out everytime Sim leaves the ground…or st.fierce…depending on the Sim
st.mp works wonders against Chun and Fei (stuffs hazanchu(sp?) and wheelkick(nonEX)

If you look at the hit-boxes for it, it’s hardly surprising. Shit is like a wall in front of Guile’s face.

Just got around to finally watching Warahk’s set against Tatsu () and props man, that was entertaining as hell.

As Branh said, too much wall diving on the Claw player’s part. You did well, though. I have played Tatsu several times online and he plays nothing like that. Claw is an entirely footsie based character, and he has an advantage over Guile in that aspect. Claw’s st.MK must be one of the longest-reaching pokes in game. As far as all the wall dive shenanigans are concerned, aerial throw and j.MP take care of them. If you block a wall dive attack and Claw lands close to you, that is a free backfist. You can also focus the attack and then sweep, backfist, throw, etc. Claw for free. If he wall dives full screen away, EX Sonic Boom is free. Wall dives are terribly unsafe in the IV series.

Also, Claw’s wake up defense has not changed whatsoever. You can attempt meaty cr.jabs on him without any consequences. EX Scarlet Terror has no invincibility frames. His U2 does, so no meaties allowed, but you can safe jump it with j.HK.

As far as fighting El Fuerte, C.Viper, Akuma, Abel, etc., I think Dictator and Rufus are worthy secondaries for tournament Guile players. Most of the aforementioned characters are very hard to zone and keep in check, but either their stamina or their wake up defense are poor. However, Dictator and Rufus just love fighting those types of characters because once they get it they have the ability to apply tremendous pressure and do a lot of damage as a result. Hence, if you are sick and tired of El Fuerte and Viper, look into using one of those two as secondaries.

Guile (me) vs Abel

Critique

Eh? You’re clearly not looking for critical analysis - you mashed some Abel who doesn’t know how to handle Guile. Nice one.

Nope, I just said “critique”. Good analysis though.

The very definition of “critique” is “critical analysis”.

Not looking for critique, just providing some entertainment.
p.s I messed up on the sound recording, so you might have to put your speakers up.

maybe uhm… stick it out with the character you actually know how to play properly.

counterpicking doesn’t work when you don’t actually know the matchup.

i dont know how to play guile properly against feurte
