no problem. i’m adding you as a friend now. I also need help with Chun mirror matches too.
bahn(ism) vs. wong3key
Good games. I appreciate that you have a general understanding of how Ryu operates; often you found ways to liberally execute FA attacks to give you an opportunity to land some free damage. There’s a number of missed opportunities which, with time and practice, will make you more formidable.
DP -> Ultra needs to be mastered hands down. If you were more consistent at landing this, our session would have turned out much differently. (Often you would land a DP – usually off a trade, which should have lead to an Ultra followup, but instead, you executed an EX DP.)
Having just recently watched Daigo vs. MM matchup @ SB4, I would suggest learning the proper spacing to launch Hadokens at Chun as she can easily punish this with HK/MK Hasanshu. Learn the right time to use FAs so that it connects/isolates her attacks more often, rather than just praying on blind fortune.
Also, don’t rely so much on crouching fierce as the “go to” button against potential AA. It didn’t take long for me to come up with an alternative to isolate your move on my descent. Mix this up with st. rh or better yet, go for the Dragon Punch.
I think the most blatant weakness as you outlined in your bios is that you’re quite predictable. I know you consider yourself to be an above average player, but I thought your performance was very sloppy compared to other Ryu players I’ve encountered offline/on. It’s essential that Ryu maintain the pace of the game and avoid putting himself in positions where Chun can land quick attacks leading into EX Kicks or throws (which could be prevented with more use of cr. mk).
Also practice more crossup opportunities and don’t just rely on doing his top down or EX Tatsu (which is a nice answer to respond with when you’ve knocked the opponent down). Spend some more time in training mode and work on getting your BnBs down and you’ll develop into a very solid player.
Chun Li is a nightmare to AA…
Bahn, you should add me. Chun is one of my bad matchups I need some practice.
Bahn - GG’s as well…My gosh Vaccant is right, the timing to AA you with the C.FP was a nightmare. Sorry it took so long to get to playing, I was in the middle of a match when you sent me the invite.
Good - Overall knowledge of character and moves especially when to use them (Ultra, Caught me twice I think). Very good at punishing when given the opportunity. Great at throw teching. Good use of spinning EX for an anti air.
Could work on - You jumped a lot. If I didn’t suck so much at executing I could’ve punished you a lot more like you said. I also figured out your fireball then overhead pattern. But like I said I couldn’t punish so more power to you, just watch out for players w/better execution.
We should play again sometime. Maybe later today if you’re free. I was kinda stressed that I had to get ready and catch the bus in 2 minutes haha freak School!
GG’s
i guess Wong never updated the thread?
im still behind on my points…
also I only use Bison (Dictator) and Chun Li now
Haha, during our first two matches – I caught myself doing it a LOT more than usual and was saying to myself: WTF are you doing!!! As a rule, I generally don’t jump against Shotos, Chun is a lot more dangerous with her ground game. In any event, but it was a great way to see if/how you’d respond to it.
This matchup can be really challenging as the above average Ryu player knows how to control vertical and horizontal space using Hadoken, DP, Focus attacks and has consistent execution of “footsies”. I promise to play more seriously in our next session.
p.s. I have a few other patterns too.
p. p. s. I love that new website which can document all the player feedback from participants on the XBL team. Everyone should not only register but give that guy rep for such an awesome idea.
why is this in the ryu thread?
we should move it to the general street fighter 4 forum
jst my opinion
bahn(ism) (Chun, Blanka) vs. cruzanbwoy25 (Chun, Ken, Ryu) – Part One
Chun mirror: Nice use of hasan; you executed it quite confidently and during opportunities where I would least expect it (since this move can be focused easily for those with quick reactions). I also was impressed with your ability to use the jump-in target combo, but would recommend that you develop more variety and alternate between j. fp and j. rk to create opportunities to hit the opponent.
Even though the mirror matches can be annoying for either player, it seems that you struggle to control the spacing when the opponent isn’t in close quarters. When they are, instead of using more damaging combos, you choose to exclusively go on a jabbing spree (which I refer to as "birdpecking). These opportunities would work better in your favor by transitioning your jab attacks into lk hits, which in turn would give you the ability to do EX legs. Another great BnB combo (which I rarely get to perform consistently online is jab to st. fp. This is an effective sequence that allows you to get some quick damage (and raise the opponent’s stun meter, ultimately leading to dizzy).
As for normal attacks, there isn’t enough usage here to make your ground game really solid. Generally all of Chun’s moves are effective. The ones those of us in the Fellowship recommend is st. mp and st. mk which are great counters/pokes against ground/aerial situations. St. mp should be used a LOT because it’s a quick move that’s safe to throw out and generally not easy to punish. Finally, look for more ways to do Ultra safely; the few times you executed this against me seemed (to me) as if they were done out of desperation rather than instinct. Focus on using this to punish moves that you’re a 100% will connect, the most frustrating reality for an opponent is watching so much health get lost from a whiffed Ultra.
vs. Shotos:
Your Ryu/Ken felt average to me. At no point did I ever feel threatened, which freely allowed me to come in with my pokes and cross-up according. I think a more diverse set of tactics that utilize pokes and 2-in-1s better would help you from giving up your fighting space from being compromised. Also watch for baits that lead you into doing Dragon Punch (Dime refers to this as the "West Coast Shuffle); often players get the impression they immediately need to execute moves on wakeup, which the more experienced tourney players always take advantage of.
As for the matchup vs. Blanka - my best advice is to moderate your use of projectiles since he can slide and punish this for free. Spam less jabs unless you instinctively know the ball is coming, and more importantly – when using Chun, you should be punishing all Blanka Balls with Ultra/Super. I assume that you don’t face a lot of Blanka players and this is a challenging matchup for you.
(we are still playing, but this is the initial feedback I wanted to post while it was still fresh in my mind.)
bahn(ism) (Chun, Guile) vs. cruzanbwoy25 (Ken, Ryu, Chun, Viper) – Part Two
Best advice I can give you is to evolve from jab, jab, jab, jab. This doesn’t even qualify as a BnB and I am sure others will agree that this a very novice form of attacking (especially with Chun; with Rog and flowchart shotos, it’s expected) and I feel you’re capable of doing more efficient combos. I realize that you feel this is a great way to get ppl off you, but strive to get into the habit of shifting jab attacks into what I mentioned earlier. I am just telling you this so that you can avoid developing bad habits against players who are even better than me.
That’s really all I have to add since I’ve already provided extensive feedback. GGs.
kthx: dude, I was just thinking the same thing (actually for months now). I figure the only reason why it’s here was a means to prevent the community from spamming the discussion up too much (lord knows we’ve got our fair share of morons here). However, it would still generate more attention and participation if moved into a frequently accessed area.
Good games. I was also getting lag those last few games. I am better with Chun on a stick than Ken, or Ryu. I just wanted to take a break and refocus. When I did those Ultras in the earlier matches it was out of frustration, because it was not coming out initially when you through fireballs. It was pissing me off, so I wanted to make sure I was doing it right. I did try to do it against Blanka, but it wasnt coming out. I dont think I hold the charge long enough, though I try to hold down back as much as I can. I did manage to FA Dash forward into Ultra. I have been practicing it alot, but only manage to execute once during our matches but you was using Guile and recovered fast enough to block it.
You kept doing cr lp, cr, lk, st mp, fireball, alot. Is that a link? I never seen anyone do that before, so I kept trying to jab in the middle, then I would get hit the st mp, and fireball. You are the best chun I played by far, and have learned a few new things. Throwing a slow fireball, so I would Ultra into it, is very smart. I kept thinking I would go through it, but it kept hitting me. Also, you did cr. lk when I was knockdown, which cancel about all my wake up moves, even when I tried to jump. Very effective, and I am adding it to my arsernal. And one of my biggest problems is Teching Throws. I need to anticipate the throw, and even when I do, my reaction time is too slow.
Those 2 times I picked Bison, and Viper was by mistake. I dont usually play them, so I only knew basic stuff.
edit: One other thing. Does jump Hp~Hp beat alot of moves? I usually just air throw when the opponent jumps first, but you kept connecting with that move, then you would get me with EX SBK. I’ve seen this done many times, but the opp always fall too far away from me to connect the EX SBK. Do I have to hit you with the target combo at a certain height to be able to EX SBK at then end?
I see bahn is tearing things up
Yeah, that lag just seemed to come out of nowhere and it’s obvious that we were mutually getting annoyed at that (made it a lot easier to punish kikos I threw out early, lol).
To punish the Blanka ball, the trick is to catch him just as he’s about to land back on the ground (remember that Ultra merely slows down time). Dash Ultra can also work (MM tends to do this every so often against players). If Guile does jab SB, it can only be punished on instinct; much harder to punish than Ryu.
Speaking of which, I need to work on my Guile; I’ve become somewhat rusty with him. :\
Hm, officially no - it’s just a very tight blockstring. Most players are hoping to create an opportunity and counter attack after the st. mp, so the FB is a great way of stuffing most attacks. The string is to give the player the impression they’re in a frame trap. However, it CAN be punished though by certain characters including Chun (example: Super can cleanly go right through).
Thanks! I appreciate the compliment. I aspire to be as great as MagnetoManic and ludthinks who have exceptional execution and mindgames.
The varied usage of kikos is paramount to Chun’s ground/AA game. Fierce version is great against late jump-ins and meaty 2-in-1s. MK version is the best to use in general (when I first started playing SFIV, I always had the impression the jab version had the best recovery). Against characters like Chun and Abel who possess Ultras that can easily punish her, jab kiko should be only used at full screen distance. Most Chun players think they’re safe at a 3/4s distance and tend to end up getting punished due to the frame recovery.
Lately I’ve been conditioning myself to not rely too much on projectiles for my offense since all her normals are a more effective means to control space and reserve my meter for Super or punishing moves; not to mention that Chun always needs to be in a charge state (or whiffing jabs) to maintain her position.
Chuns throws are too good; I slept on its effectiveness, but it’s a great way of catching people off guard and should play a big part in your offense.
Aha. I was wondering what happened there; I thought you were getting bored.
I haven’t come across anyone using this for some time, so you were definitely catching me off guard and that forced me to change up my tactics to keep the pace in my favor.
Ground tactics:
If you’re using this as a jump-in move, then yes, it can be very effective because skilled players tend to set this move to hit the character deep, making it difficult to defend against.
Air tactics:
As for an air attack, yes, this is pretty godlike imo; there are certain moves that can punish it, but it depends on the angle and timing which they execute it. I’ve been knocked out of the air by late j. rk kicks by Ryu for example, which forced me to bait them into jumping first so that the opportunity works in my favor.
The target combo setups a variety of different possibilities after you connect:
- land, jump df -> headstop x3
- land while charging uf --> EX SBK
- land, jump df -> headstop x 1, fp (land), headstomp x 2 (3) – last hit varies on how early stomps are done
- land, jump df -> headstomp x 1, fp (land) xx EX Legs
- land, jump df -> headstomp x1, fp (land and be charging uf while fp connects), EX SBK (for bonus pts, do Ultra if near corner)
- land while charging uf and near corner --> Ultra
It’s a very effective setup since most players generally block the first hit but end up getting caught by the second. If you target the opponent’s head… well, there’s no defense for that, making it free for you to transition to any combo sequence of your choice after hit confirm.
Xx Dime xX created an awesome thread on stomp shenanigans posted in the Chun boards, I recommend checking it out.
Re: throws to punish jumps
Also, air throw works wonders against neutral jumps, a few players on my list have managed to catch me every so often, which is why it’s not a good idea to use this move at close range.
Lemme know if you wanna play some more - I can try hosting if ya like.
Pachi (Frylock): LOL! Well y’know. We all have our good and bad days
Thanks! For now, you can just leave all the search fields empty to get a complete list of members. I plan on adding a friends list for members sometime.
Hey Shirase,
I’m setting up a tournament for XBL online. Do you mind if I use your website as the training grounds or area to report scoring and Tourney match feedback?
Please do!
I just hit 50 posts, so I made this thread - http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=213127 - to avoid hijacking this one.
So if anyone here has comments or ideas for the site (http://www.demonicabyss.com), please post them in the new thread.
bahn(ism) (Chun) vs. wongkey (Ryu): Part Two
As promised, I played ya “in the zone”. The previous feedback I left still stands and I would add that you should work on being more patient and not strive to be so aggro (aggressive). It’s a bit ironic too that in this particular session you jumped a LOT more than I did; making it relatively easy to punish you with various AA-attacks like st. fp/st. rh…
You did MUCH better connecting dp -> Ultra this time around but it’s still not a technique you have officially mastered.
Solid Ryu players effectively set up strategies to bait Chun into situations where they can be punished. You were doing this in the first and second set with mk -> fb; but I feel you should find other BnB and ground tactics. Jumping around like a rabbit is not an ideal tactic Ryu should be doing on the regular.
Until next time!
XBL Online Tournament
We’ve been getting numerous requests at the irc room about holding an Online XBL tournament. Basically, it’s due time we started this thing going instead of merely talking about it.
Rules/Guidelines are as follows:
-Single Elimination
-Best 2 out of 3 rounds.
-First to win 5 moves to the next round.
-There will be a total of five rounds (Each round will consist of a two day time limit for opponents to complete their matches. Those who do not complete their match in the first round or any round by the end of the 2 day time limit will be automatically forfeit).
Special thanks to Shirase Akira for developing http://www.demonicabyss.com for everyone to record and upgrade their stats as well as post feedback and last but not least allowing us to use his site. Pretty much means that everyone will have their own stat cards and skill level based on the opponents’ feedback.
Players can also visit the irc room in the OP to discuss match data and trade info as well to delve deeper into their game.
Registration is officially open. Tournament starts as soon as all 32 slots are filled. Best way to get registered is by visiting the irc room and getting in touch with Nemesys or Kyarisan.
Good luck and hope to see the XBLer’s join in.
I’d like to join that tournament, but I don’t have IRC and don’t plan on getting it.
You don’t need to download anything. There’s a direct way of getting there through your web browser.
Just type in:
and head to “#streetfighter4”
(without the quotes)
It’s as simple as that. No download no software needed at all. Just as long as you have internet service and a web browser. Heck, you can eve use your iPhone or iPod Touch too.
vs I OMFG its Jr I
What an enjoyable/slightly annoying time. Im surprised i actually had a fun time, i have a personal distaste for vega, from my short lived cvs2 days. I just find him annoying and he comes off as random to me even though i know he isnt. but here is what i got from our games.
against my fei long. I really dont know this match-up too well, ive been on fei for about a month and have fought very few vegas. I know how to punish things but thas about it. you did a good job of baiting my Fks, partly cause i love doing em so much since gouken has no DP move whatsoever, and just overall punishing my mistakes. Your pokes were good as well and your spacing was top notch too. it looked like you had some fei experience cuase when you would do the df+hk move you would not try to throw me, like not even once. instead most of the time you jumped, i would have punished each one but my reaction is time is still a little slow, or blocked , safer. also, you didnt doo any of vegas non-ex crossover wall jumps where he does the punch move. maybe cause you know its heavily punishable by fei? idk. but that was good too. also, during my block strings and attempts to combo i noticed you were trying to find gaps in my stings with your own pokes. That worked good for you as well, for a bit. you were pretty much picking me apart. so, after the 4th or 5th match i started to think about what i could do to change it up. my idea was to do what a lot of ryus do and do a couple attacks then focus. This worked to put a slowdown to your counter poking during my strings, and won me a couple matches. Once you realized what i was doing you changed it up, very wisely on your part. you started doing pokexxback flip. i didnt really have a punish for this so i just back dashed after i realized i couldnt hit you with focus. The one thing that you were susceptible to was the tenshin grab. I landed this on you a lot from pretty much the same setup. You did catch on eventually, which was good, but it took a while. i think i was down 4-10 before i decided to take a breather and switch to my main in hopes of catching up, which i did. when i switched back to fei we just kept trading games since we were pretty used to eachother at this point and it just became a poking game of sorts, but i did learn a lot from this; like my “safe” rekka aint so safe vs vega if he is wearing the claw cause he has so much damn reach, i hate him… lastly you had some clutch ultras that just totally caught me off guard. the one that sticks out in my mind the most is when i tried to hit you and you did backflip, the long one, and to punish i did rekkax3 but instead of hitting you i wiffed and you instantly did ultra, ggpo i lost. thing is i know he can ultra after BF, i just didnt see that one coming. gs on that, ill be more aware next time.
against gouken, like i said i picked him cause i was hoping to catch up to your wins since the win/loss ratio was looking very lopsided. so, i came up 6-0 and then switched back to fei when it was even again. well, for starters you didnt play the vega poke and stay away strat on me that you did last time. you also did not threaten me with ex-wall dive to go through my FBS, so i through them freely. i was also able to catch you with A LOT of demon flip mix-ups. in order to deal with those mix-ups you are going to have to have a watchful eye or listen for them. gouken makes a sound as he is going up for the flip, its very distinctive, thats how you can tell if he is doing one, same with akuma. you did catch one of them though, with jump grab, that might be an answer for you, just trial and error to see if it works consistantly. some good things were that you did not do the long backflip on my jump-ins, idk why a lot of the vegas i play do this, its so unsafe. That was good. One thing that also would have worked for you would have been more of the other type of wall dive. I almost always try to punish that move, but i know from experience that vega can time time that move to either beat my attack or outright grab me. so, you may want to learn what the timing is on that. I know i shouldnt always try and knock him out of it, but i cant help myself. i think you only tried one ultra on me, i think it was cuase you were expecting an FB, but from the spot you did it was completely unsafe. And since it was unsafe i countered with my own ultra and beat yours. So, let me explain this, from the distance i set up that scenario up, fs away with both of us in opposite corners of the screen, i was making it look like i was gonna throw fbs to get you to ultra. well, its from that ultra i am able to counter with my ultra, any closer and i miss. just be aware of that. So, i would suggest annoying me/you opponent more and in all abd do some or all of the things that i said you werent doing and you will do better. gouken lacks the ability to easily connect combos, they all start from FP and c.lpx3, s.lkx2 is a joke, so i have to wait for you to make a mistake, catch you on the recovery of one of your moves, or score some kind of jumpin on you to net some serious damage. thats it, long write-up, sorry, but im at work and am bored. ggs dude.
damn man…good stuff…didnt know that.
good to know:) thanks
