SRK Photographers Thread Vol. 1

Thanks a bunch!

I’ll probably order the sample pack. I’m not sure about the curtain sync, I’ll have to read up on that. I really appreciate the help, I’ll hopefully find a cheaper 550ex online.

i have this ‘sony picture utility’ software (came with camera) that organizes my photographs on a calendar. i’ve grown to like this method of organization but wish the software would allow me to do other stuff too - mostly small stuff like integrate the burning of discs or delete a shot while viewing it, etc. i pretty much want something that’ll do the calendar view but more feature-packed i guess; anyone know of anything that fits the description?

two questions that maybe you’d all entertain…
how do you all organize your photos? what kind of storage solutions have you explored?

At work and home I use Adobe Lightroom. It has disc burning, back-up to external drives or server, tagging, and picture rejection in the program. I don’t know what you mean by calendar view, but lightroom can sort by date shot.

At work, we import the pictures from the camera using lightroom. During the import, we tag all the images with the import dialog. Then we do any white balance, exposure or level adjustments and reject any pictures that we don’t want. Then we use the export function to burn to disc (for archiving) and back-up all images to a server in one step.

cool that’s some cool software

when i said calendar view, i meant like you could flip through an actual calendar (like with squares like you’d see on an executive desk blotter) by month or year and see on which day, what shots were taken and when. i think it takes advantage of the timestamp on your photos made by the camera

but yea, i found some screenshots:

i am finding it to be a very fluid and convenient method of organization and am still looking for something like it but more powerful (like lightroom). thank you for the advice

Here’s some of my work, nothing really new 'cause I haven’t had the time lately but I’d like to get some thoughts on them.(A lot of them a big sets so I’m only posting a few):

Constructive criticism welcome. :sweat::angel:

some some creepy shit. good contrast on them tho. i really like that last one.

i just ordered my 28mm and 430 speedlite and im getting them the end of this week. im pretty excited.

I just got a Canon 40D and I freakin’ love it. It’s a ginormous step up from my Rebel. I was able to test it at my old high schools Homecoming rally and it exceeded my expectations.

coool. my friend got that the week it came out. it is a HUGE step up from the rebel. congrats. how often do you use the live preview function?

^Never. I really have no use for it at all…

yea, i figured. most the time i rather be looking through the view finder anyway. same goes with point and shoots.

anyway, my friend showed me something kinda cool. you can connect your camera via USB and use your monitor as a preview screen. thought it was kinda interesting.

that pic of the hall of lockers is kinda cool. what lens did you use for that?

Yeah, I’ve seen that before on some studio setups. I think its cool, but nothing I shoot allows me to be tethered to a computer.

I used my 17-40 F4L. It’s my main and definitely my favorite lens. I hope to upgrade to the 16-35 F2.8 or the 24-70 F2.8 one of these days when I can afford it.

woosh. that was one of the lenses i considered recently. but the f4 really doesnt appeal to me. how do you deal with that in low light?

I actually find F4 to be fine in many low light situations. If I want to stop action then I have to crank the ISO up on my camera, but that isn’t so bad because Canons deal with noise really well. It sucked on my rebel but my 40D is awesome at high ISOs The 3200 setting on the 40D is probably less noisy than the 1600 on a rebel.

^ I can get a 1/320 of a second at ISO 1600 under stadium lights, which is fine to stop action. That was shot with my Rebel too, so it can have way less noise. Bump the

I would rather have an F2.8 lens more because of the depth of field than the higher shutter speeds. I haven’t really ever had an issue with getting a sharp picture in a long time. When I used my rebel sometimes it meant compromising image quality, but I don’t I have to do that any more with the 40D.

In emergency situations I have a 50 F1.8 at the bottom of my bag, but I think I’ve used it once just to test it out.

I hope that’s kind of informative…

heh. the 50mm 1.8 is my main prime right now. i just ordered a 28mm 1.8 prime. hoping that would give me some more wide angle shots. im really liking prime lenses right now. it might just be a phase, but they seem to give me the best image quality out of the lenses i have.

ReloadChapsticks. Those are really good images!

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that. It’s too bad I can’t ever get anyone good to model for me, so I have to use myself all the time. It’s why I stopped shooting for a bit.

The 50mm 1.8 has been my main for a while now also - in fact I just took it to Shanghai with me. Because of the range I think it has taught me to be a better photographer since I have to move around more, not just be lazy. Really good lens for being so damn cheap - I think I picked mine up off of Amazon for like $70.

I do think it’s time to get something new though although I’m just not sure what I want yet. Looking for a normal walking around type of lens.

Yeah, I think I’m too used to the 50mm 1.8. Its on my camera most of the time because I love shooting with a low f-stop. I’ve used it so much that I don’t take very good pictures with my two other lenses :-/. I think I just need more practice. Is there any other sub-$200 lenses that are really good to have?

Caught in a Dust Devil Kirkuk’ Iraq US Military Base

The Canon EF 28-105/3.5-4.5 is my most used lens (read: puts most of the food on my table), and sells new for about $250, which translates into an ebay price of $75~$125.

At about twice that price, you can get the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, which adds image stabilization.

Unless you are looking for a longer lens, in which case, the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 will set you back for $170, and is a decent lens for the money.

Just remember that it is more about the photographer than it is about the equipment, because composition and lighting has more effect on the final product than any camera or lens combination. My personal opinion is that the 28-105/3.5-4.5 --> x2 extender combo will give you the most bang for your buck, and should come in at under $200 on ebay.
