SRK Photographers Thread Vol. 1

thats awesome man. i want to go to africa someday.

i have a 350D. it does the trick.

That cloud and sky picture BLEW MY MIND.

Props to your girlā€™s skills.

has anyone used the canon 17-85mm IS? ive read all these reviews on it and its very mixed. just wondering if anyones got some personal experience with the lens.

That picture has excellent control of contrast. Is that the original or did you burn/dodge?

Nah, nothing fancy, just took it with the micro mode and then in photo shop bumped up the contrast to make the darker areas darker. I really like how the the reflection came out in eyes. I didnt have a high quality camera so it was sheer fluke how well it came out

I just use the crappy scanner at my house, because I try and spend as little money as possible to get my photos developed (99 cents at Target, oh yeah!).

I just finished printing some better photos from that same series, but the only copies I have on me now are mounted in to window mats.

Any other SoCal residents getting trippy pictures from all the smoke. Yesterday, a huge ass cloud was lingering over my neighborhood blocking out most of the sun it was weird (streetlights on at 2 pm wth). All I have right now are some crappy digital shots I took, but Iā€™ll have some film prints by Friday probably.

Iā€™m personally not in a great area for any of the cool fire shots but here are a few I found on Flickr that really impressed me:

Again - I didnā€™t take any of these but I like them a lot

Because Iā€™m impatient, Iā€™m going to post up a piece of a contact sheet I was able to squeeze out today. I canā€™t wait to print some of these, especially the one in the top-left corner. These shots still need to be a little color-balanced, but this contact sheet is pretty damn close to what it was really likeā€¦

mannā€¦ it looked like silent hill outside.

As promisedā€¦

These were all shot on Kodak Gold 200 film without filters. The smoke and ash is to blame for the crazy ass colors. Itā€™s hard to believe but it was really like that outside. When I got my negatives back from processing I thought they had been messed up because theyā€™re literally purple/blue. Itā€™s crazyā€¦

^^ā€¦ first one is awesome.

Images are from my p&s Canon Powershot A520 except for one which is from an older Olympus 520ā€¦ coincedentally having the same model numberā€¦ As for newer stuff, it isnā€™t in digital form yet. I shoot film on a Canon Rebel T2 with 50mm f/1.8 and 28mm f/2.8. Film of choice: Tri-x 400 and Velvia 100, but any is fine just for practice.

So, I posted this in GD and Tech Talk, but figured it would probably be practical to link it here. Thereā€™s a new wireless SD card that works with any SD camera that will automatically (after set up) send your pictures to your PC/Mac and some select photo sharing websites as soon as you are within range of your network. Its crazy. Only supports jpgs though, I think, so this isnā€™t too great if you shoot in RAW.

Waiting for a CF version!

Here are a few pics I took last weekend at a b-boy jam I went to. Some of them came out pretty blurry, I think I need a better flashā€¦ Iā€™m using the on-board one :frowning:
I forgot to change the ISO settings, too. Any advice? Need new lens? Need better flash? Should practice more shooting? I know the pics look warm, I did the color balance that wayā€¦

What kind of camera and lens are you using?

FWIW, your white balance problem is that you donā€™t have a gel on the flash.

Basically, you have two sections of the photo. The stuff that was lit by your flash, and the stuff that was lit by the tungsten lights. If you want to get the correct white balance, you put a amber filter over the flash so that it matches the color temperature of the ambient light.

Canon 20D and the lens I was using that night (for most of the pics) was the fixed Canon 50mm f/1.8 (the cheap one). I had another lens that could zoom, but the pics came out even blurrier and it was slow. Iā€™ll try to look for that filter that you mentioned, any brands you can recommend? Iā€™m going to be stuck with the on-board flash for a while, I probably wonā€™t be able to afford a speedlite till next year :frowning:

Thanks for the advice!

I do recommend a couple of things. First, DIY the warming gel.

Either order the sample pack, or find someone that does stage lighting and ask if they have any ripped or otherwise un-usable gels. Then cut them down and tape them to the pop-up as needed.

Second, make sure that you set the custom function on your 20D for the second curtain sync if you havenā€™t already done so.

Lastly, you might look into a used 550EX if money is an issue and you will be doing this type of shooting with any regularity. You should be able to get it for about 200~250 bucks on ebay or craigslist. The difference between the the 550 and 580 is the guide number (flash power) the 550 has a guide number of 55 at ISO100 with a 105mm lens. The 580 has a guide number of 58 at ISO100 with a 105mm lens. (As a means of comparison, your pop-up has a guide of 13)

Check out this article, and how the photographer deals with similar lighting situations using a pair of 550s.
