SRK Photographers Thread Vol. 1

sweet. youve got a nice set of lenses. ive got a similar line up but im still using an older entry level body (350D). i have a 28mm F1/8, 85mm F1.8, and the 135L. for the most part, the 28mm is my main… but im starting to favor the 85mm a lot more since i like taking detail pictures and cropped portraits. the 135L is my walk-around tho. kinda strange since its such a long range on a crop body. but i cant resist getting candids of people and the quality is unmatched by the other lenses i have.

other than that, i used to own a 50mm 1.8, was my favorite for a little while but i grew out of it because it was just difficult to use in the environments im usually in. sold a 75-300mm lens. it was more of a impulse buy to try a tele-lens. still have my kit lens tho. its my most versatile lens and i use it for macro with an adapter.

im looking at full frame at the moment as an upgrade from my little rebel. im starting to get booked for higher paying gigs, like weddings, so im beginning to find more justification for getting one.

typically i like to do portraits and other subjects like that. i moved from incandescent lights to speedlights. so far, i really like it. still trying to figure a way to have a lightsource to light the room without interfering with the white balance and exposure when im taking pictures in my garage tho.

Have you tried gelling the speedlights?

yea, it works ok. but i sort of want the same function as a modeling light, just so i can see where teh shadows fall too. i know the speedlights have a “modeling light” function. but its nothing more than just having them strobe for a second… i dont know. it was just something ive been looking into

im currently looking at a demi mola beauty dish. just for kicks i guess.

its really in motion

You ever think about making one? I’m pretty happy with my homemade beauty dish

hahaha. you know, i thought about it because its literally just a bowl with the inside painted with some reflective color… but since i deal with models and actual clients, i dont want them to lose confidence in me when they see DIY stuff. its already bad enough i have snoots made from 7-11 coffee cups . ive seen some really well made ones tho. but that demi dish is really prrrrrretty:lovin:

Yeah, I looked it up after you mentioned it, it does like pretty nice… not to push it, but the DIY beauty dish doesn’t look too ghetto. I used reflective paint on a terra cotta bowl and it looks pretty nice, in my opinion. Just another option if you want to be cheapo like me, haha. And it could be something nice to play with if you’re not picking up the demi dish soon.

everything else in my flickr is crap.

lol… half your photo stream is pictures of the same guy.

i’m pretty retarded when it comes to flickr.

and i don’t have a pro account so i’ve already maxed out my limit.

hahah, maybe if you down sized some of those photos, youd have a pretty interesting stream. i see you got a D40, its a pretty nice camera. any cool lenses?

i just have the stock kit lens, a 18-200 zoom lens, and a 50mm 1.8 lens.

i’m trying to pick up the basics before i get any wide angle or macro lenses.

nah, those are perfectly fine lenses. theres not much more you can do with a lens that costs 1000+. at that point, its all about build quality and performance, really.

a lot of the paid work i do (product photography), i do with my kit lens. it gets the job done.

thanks for the feedback.

:3

it’s hard to start photography here in pdx, because i’ve noticed the tendancy that most photographers haveto use photoshop to compensate for bad photography.

while it produces impressive results, the public just sees a pretty picture, not a shitty picture that was touched up by photoshop.

so my primary goal is to focus on lighting and composition.

nothings wrong with using photoshop -_-

yea, i absolutely agree that lighting (and expsosure) and composition are critical in photography. i noticed a lot of the photos you have in your stream are in the 50mm+ range. try experimenting with a wide lens, also, to vary your style and expand your creativity. sometimes, its easier to compose with a wide lens on smaller objects, mostly because you are able to get closer and move around your subject easier than if you were to use a longer tele-lens. i should speak for myself tho. my most used lens is a 135mm. haha.

photoshop is ok.

but i think layers are evil.

especially separate levels of +/- exposure on top of each other.

i like the 50mm lens, it does really well in low light, hopefully when i save up, i can get a nice wide angled lens.

i think with larger lenses, there’s too much for me to handle while i am worrying about shutter speed and aperature.

lol.

I wanna buy a Canon AE-1…I think its good even though it uses film…
My sister got a Fujifilm SLR Im gonna try experimenting with it…

haha, i rarely upload a photo straight from the camera. i always have to touch up my photos, even if its just a simple colors adjustment or something.

as far as lenses go, i prefer primes just because you dont have to worry about zooming. that alone would save a few valuable seconds. theyre usually quicker in a sense that they sometimes focus a lot faster than ordinary zooms and they allow larger apertures, which entails quicker shutter speeds.

i was trying to get into film once. but… i cant imagine waiting for my photos to develop and being limited to a few dozen photos per roll of film. the AE-1 is a pretty common SLR. still holding their values too. i usually see them go for around 200 (used of course)

just a few pictures of/from my new camera.

im usually not a fan of macro photos. but this camera does it pretty well. and i was pretty impressed with the quality.

Blooper:
Nice pics! The last two were taken with the P&S? I just got my wife a 770 IS, she was tired of me having to bring my DSLR to family events or smaller events all the time (which I continue to do anyways cause I love my DSLR :-D). I think I looked into your P&S, but the 770IS edged it out for me cause it has some CHDK support (the hack I posted about earlier that lets you have controls similar to SLRs like shooting in RAW).

Just won an auction to get a Canon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens… paying about $130. This will effectively replace my Tamron 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6… is there any reason I should keep the Tamron other than as a backup?.. its only worth about $40 on ebay :-(.

Probably going to invest in a backdrop soon. Either seamless paper or this Botero Grey backdrop (I’ve been drinking the strobist kool-aid and have heard great things about it). Of course, I’ll probably have to get a real backdrop stand or find a way to keep my PVC one from falling down all the time.
