SRK Photographers Thread Vol. 1

Don’t usually bother with B&W but it seemed fitting for these.

what kind of lens did you use that first portrait? any post done to that?

^It was shot with a Canon 135 F2.0 on a Canon 5D and then run through Nik Silver Efex Pro.

ahh the 135L. thats my love right there. are you using the mkI or mkII 5D?

Just a MKI and it does everything I need it to. Great camera.

yea, ive been looking at both the mki and mkii. i dont do much print work, and most of my stuff is online anyway, so i dont necessarily need the 21mp the mkii has. but the way the mkii controls noise is insane. did you get the mki a while ago while it was still pretty new? or did you get it second hand?

so I found a d60 on amazon with a kit lens for 550, is that a good dslr to drop money on?
I have no experience with photography, also what lens should I buy?
trying to take photos such as these:

ANY camera is a good camera to start with. 550 is a decent deal. i wouldnt suggest spending more than that on your first camera anyway. theres a lot to learn, no matter how much your camera costs.

i wouldnt worry too much about getting a lens other than the kit lens (18-55 f3.5-5.6) for now. from the examples you showed, that lens is fully capable of allowing you to take pictures like that. those shots are really wide, if not ultra wide. the kit lens on the wide end should be wide enough for some of the photos you linked. get a good feel for the kit lens, then see what youre lacking or want to achieve to help you decide what other lenses you might want. who knows, maybe the kit lens is more than enough for your shooting style. you wont know till you try it.

its not just the equipment you use, but the techniques you use. dont just think a new DSLR will get you pictures like that. some of the main elements in those photos-- ALL photos, are lighting and angles. pick up a book or join some other photography forums to find some information about these things. it does get pretty technical at some point, but if you can understand how things affect one another, you should have an easier time.

Thanks, I know it’s a nice cam just was wondering if I could take the styles of pics I want with the kit lens.

definitely. youll like nikon too, if youre into bright colors. altho, it doesnt matter too much with digital photography. nikon usually over saturates.

It’s not really the brand but the price and I see from reading most people use canon or nikon.

well, most entry level DSLRs are in the 500-600 range. and since those two are the titans of photography market nowadays, you almost cant go wrong. altho, i have been hearing about some factory call backs from canon lately. so i dont know how their new products are gonna be right now.

those two also have pretty good availability of support from third party products too.

oh here’s the photography thread…

here’s some of mine

Ah, you found it. I was going to link you here after seeing your picture in the SHOWCASE thread.

I’d still like to take photographs.

One day…

not today.

nice work on that car. did you really take a picture of it in motion or did you shop it?

heres a pic of my car that i shopped. it was just parked in the middle of the street and i added some motion blur to it etc. was just messin with PS.

no driver!!!

lol. i set the car in neutral and let it roll down the hill. thats how i got the motion blur.

i just put an order in for a new point and shoot. :wgrin:

been looking for one for a little while now. i was at a couple events and concerts recently and i felt retarded for not bringing a camera. the only camera i have at the moment is my 350D and my prime lenses, which are usually turned away if you take it to a concert and draws way too much attention at casual events. my recently deceased canon powershot s200 used to be my grab-n-go:sad:. but i guess this is just an opportunity to splurge on a new toy. i ordered a canon powershot sd880IS. should be in the mail sometime this week. it looks pretty sleek and i was browsing some sample pictures that have been taken with it. they look pretty good. cant wait for it.:lovin:

what kind of camera do you guys use? itd be cool if we all discussed some of our gear and what our favorite subject matter is. maybe this thread would actually pick up again. heh.

I got mine like new back in January. All I really cared about was having a full frame camera so I really had no reason to get the MK II.

As for all of my gear, I use Canon. I carry two bodies, A 40D and a 5D MK I along with three primes, a 24 F1.4L, a 35 F1.4L and a 135 F2.0L. The 35 usually stays on the 40D and is effectively a 55mm while the 24 and the 135 switch on the 5D as needed. It gives me all the variety I need, all the lenses are super fast and most importantly to me, very responsive.

Just in the past month, I’ve used the setup to do everything from covering a women’s basketball tournament to doing a feature on a homeless guy I met in Sacremento.
