SRK MAFIA XVI - Shards of Alara: Sign-ups Begin!

Welcome to SRK Mafia XVI! I’ll be hosting this time around (along with my fuzzy assistant), and there’s a few new and rather different things that will be implemented in this game. It’s nothing SRK shouldn’t be able to handle, though. c;

Big thanks to @RadicalFuzz for helping me GM this monster, @pietastic for helping me iron out the mechanics, and Missing Person for letting me steal the format of this sign-up thread. :stuck_out_tongue:

Theme
Nicol Bolas’s nefarious plan to take over the multiverse has but one obstacle in his way: the other four shards that he shares Alara with. Governed each by their own powerful planeswalkers, the shards are protected from brute force attacks, forcing Bolas to resort to subterfuge to force the shards to collapse on themselves. The Grixis spies, who are the underlings of Bolas, have dispersed themselves into each of the four shards: Bant, the land of justice and order; Esper, home to the cities of ash and artifacts; Jund, the domain of dragons where power and hunger reign; Naya, the naturally beautiful and primal jungle. Only time will tell if the planeswalkers will find the spies before it’s too late to stop Bolas and his army of undead.

Overall Idea

In case you’re new to mafia games, here’s how this game works:

25 people get thrown into a situation where you don’t know who to trust. Each day the people of Alara get together and decide to kill somebody, to try and find Bolas’s agents. After a vote, the person with the most votes is killed by the players. At night, everyone goes back to their beds to sleep, and Bolas gets his turn to kill people. If Bolas and his agents have the same amount of people as the civilans, they win the game. If the civilians kill all of Bolas and his agents, they win. You win or lose as a team, not individually, so do your best to help your team out!

Game Size
30 Players
6 Grixians

Allegiance

There are 5 shards in Alara, each representing a different color: Grixis, Bant, Esper, Jund, and Naya. For this game, 4 of those shards are considered “civilian shards” while Grixis is considered Bolas’s domain and, therefore, the mafia shard. Additionally, each shard represents a color: Grixis is black, Bant is white, Esper is blue, Jund is red, and Naya is green. The next paragraph will explain why this is important.

This mafia game will be slightly different in the way that players will have some sort of say in what allegiance they get. Two days before the game starts (May 23rd), a PM will be sent to all players. If a player wishes, they may reply with three of their most preferred colors of White, Black, Green, Red, and Blue with the first color being their top choice. A player may also choose to say that they have no preference, in which case their allegiance will randomly be assigned. A player who does not reply will be randomly assigned. Please note that just because you prefer 3 colors doesn’t mean that you will automatically get one of those 3 colors. For obvious reasons, your preferences will not be posted publicly.

There will be a team PM for each shard. Except for Grixis (where all Grixis players will begin the game in the Grixis PM), only the planeswalker will originally start out in their shard PM. Each planeswalker has a recruit ability to add people aligned with them into their shard PM.

How do Planeswalkers Work?

Planeswalkers use these things called loyalty points (or LPs, for short) to use their abilities. The number at the bottom right-hand corner of the card represents the amount of LPs that planeswalker begins the game with. Every planeswalker ability either causes them to lose or gain LPs; for example, if Ajani uses his top ability (aka his “plus” ability), he will gain 1 LP. If he uses his bottom ability (aka his “ultimate” ability), he will lose 4 LPs. Similarly, Sarkhan’s 0 ability does not gain or lose him any LPs solely from using it, however he will lose loyalty points after it goes through.

Planeswalkers may not use any abilities that will knowingly put themselves at less than 0 LPs. (Sarkhan’s 0 ability is an exception; the amount of LPs subtracted is pretty much random). If ever a planeswalker reaches 0 loyalty points, they will be killed.

All planeswalker abilities are night abilities. (Elspeth’s plus ability goes into effect the next day).

In addition to their abilities, each planeswalker may have one more secret passive abilities that will not be reveal, even upon death.

LPs are never revealed publicly.

Last Gasps
There are none. c:

Day/Night Phase

The game will cycle between Day Phase and Night Phase. One whole cycle (day phase and night phase) will amount to 48 hours.

36 hours will be allotted for the Day Phase, starting from 9:00 AM CST and ending 9:00 PM CST the next day. During the day phase, all players will vote for who they think is the most suspicious. Or, if you’re mafia, you vote for who you pretend to think is most suspicious. The person with the most votes at the end of the phase will be killed.

Players who do not submit their lynch vote before the deadline two day phases in a row will be DQ’d. They will be listed as dead, and their role revealed.

12 hours will be allotted for the Night Phase, starting from 9 PM CST and ending at 9 AM CST the next morning. During this time, all rolled players will decide their action for the night and the mafia will decide their kill.

Talking in-thread is allowed during all phases.

A timer will be put up in the OP as well as that phase’s write-up to indicate the amount of time left until the end of the phase.

Votes
No Lynch is always a valid voting choice at all phases of the game. Your choice must be PMed to me by the end of the day phase. Votes may be changed once PMed.

Votes will be publicly revealed in the thread at the end of the day phase.

When you die, your allegiance as well as your role will be revealed. Secret abilities of Planeswalkers will not be revealed upon death.

Common Sense Rules
(stolen from MP)

  1. Do not edit ANY POSTS. Period. For any reason. Do not ask us to verify with mods that you did not have any malicious intent in editing your posts, we will not do it. Do not provide me with any photographic evidence of your edits. There are going to be no warnings this time, just DQ’s. Habitual editors will be banned. We have had this BS happen way too much during these last two games. If you have anything to add, or any clarifications to typos to make, or a broken image/link in your post, create a new post to address it.

  2. Do not PM anyone playing the game. If you are mafia, keep your PMs in the mafia conversation. If you’re one of the lovers, keep your PMs inside the Lovers conversation. You should not be PMing anyone else if you are them, and if you aren’t, you have no business using the PM inbox at all regarding this game. If you have any questions regarding gameplay, PM me. If someone PMs you that shouldn’t be, do not mention it in the thread, just PM me with the the contents of it. PM’ing once will result in a DQ. Habitually doing so will result in a ban. (Things not game related will not result in any penalty, but to keep the integrity of the game, if someone playing PMs you, please report it to me.)

  3. No coaching after you’re dead. This includes outside of SRK. I don’t care what format you’re thinking of using, be it Battle.net, AIM, MSN, Skype, Smoke Signals, Texts, Morse Code. Don’t do it. Also, because this has happened recently, I will not verify any of your hunches after you die. Keep it to yourself, take it to the Loser’s Lounge, if someone shares information they know, don’t bring it to anyone else’s attention that’s still in the game. If someone does this, PM me with the proof, and that person will face a ban.

  4. No discussing or plotting to break or bend the rules in your PMs, lovers and mafia. I’ll be in those conversations anyway, so that should go without saying. But just in case you think you can do it while I’m sleeping, think again. If you start discussing something that I don’t immediately catch, and that action is taken, once I find out, the perpetrator of the act and the instigator will both receive bans and DQs.

  5. If you are in a shard PM, you will not be allowed into the Loser’s Lounge until you leave the PM conversation after you die. It’s not entirely clear on how you do this by looking at it, but upon your death, simply click “Delete Conversation” on the left-hand side of the screen. This will only delete it on your end, and no one else’s.

6 Do not try to get removed from the game after it already starts, or try to break the rules to get DQ’d. If something super unexpected happens, I’ll try to be reasonable, but overall, if you know you’re going to be busy, and unable to play at all, don’t sign up. If you suddenly see a full schedule hit your plate just before we start, ask me to take your name off the list, and I’ll put in an alternate. After we start, I’m not going to take your name off unless you have a really good reason, and I can find an alternate to take your place. Otherwise, don’t deliberately break a rule just to get a DQ. You will not just get a DQ, but banned.

  1. Do not post any PMs, even as a joke. If you are going to make an image joke regarding PMs, at least make it obvious that it’s a joke (e.g. make it using MSPaint.)

  2. English only in game. No foreign languages allowed. This prevents the open flow of information. I will make certain exceptions for certain foreign words that have entered the English vernacular, such as “Hasta la vista,” or “Por que?” but an entire post in a foreign language will not be permitted.

  3. No speaking in codes allowed. This includes coded messages via encryption and password protected files, but speaking in cryptic messages, i.e. “the moth is in the tent”, is allowed.

  4. There will be no “deals” that transcend the game. For example: A player cannot promise that he will leave SRK forever if he’s wrong about something/lying. If an agreement seems questionable as to whether or not it breaks this rule, it probably does.

Please contact either myself (@ForgeDigger) or my fuzzy friend (@RadicalFuzz) if you think one of these rules have been broken.

The confirmation/color survey PM will go out on May 23rd around 9:00 AM CST and will be due by May 24th at 9:00 PM CST. Remember that no reply to the confirmation PM does not mean that you will not be playing; it only means that you do not prefer any particular color and therefore will be assigned a shard randomly.

First. Oh, and in.

Awesome, I love Yu-Gi-Oh! I’m in.

I’m in.

Pass. Last game still has me feeling blue.

I guess in?

Sign me up too, a co-GM can still play right?

It has been a while since I’ve played Mafia, actually. I have this strange desire to grovel to the RNGoddess to pull Mafia. Better get that looked at.

Also MP, bans for editing are one game right? And are we counting Arena games? Not that it mattered this time, since Alpha ignored all bans for his game, but for future clarity.

I gave a one-gamer to Hecatom, seems reasonable to me.

2 for non-voters IMO.

Also:

No last gasps?!

OMG, HOW ARE PEOPLE GOING TO IGNORE WHAT I SAY AFTER I DIE NOW?!?!?!?!?!

Also, I needs mah Scared White Kid shop for this game.

Hello

I tap 2 mana and play my “Sign Up” spell card.

mtgcardmaker.com

You could just use this:

It’s from a card called Agoraphobia.

Ps: the flavor text is pretty funny-
“Everyone is choosing sides. Well I choose inside!”

Signing up.

Or this one works too:

From a card called Totally Lost.

I’ll play

Maybe I should go with black knight as my avatar instead

YOU’RE RETIRED

I’m going to be sad if I don’t end up getting white as my color now.

How does Sarkhan ever gain enough points to use his powers? 1 point gain for mafia kills if he spends 2 points to kill somebody that phase, which he will never have to use?

does the 7 mean he starts with 7 points? I quit playing before planeswalkers were a thing

edit: reading is hard

Also, retirement is overrated.
