Minna no Nihongo’s a good one. A bit dry, but it’s pretty good still. You’re gonna need the main book and translation and grammatical notes. Also master hiragana + katakana asap.

just finished watching this waiting for superman documentary that jae hoon (or whoever) was pumping and it’s definitely interesting, but as is the case in just about every documentary there are some issues that need to be reconciled. for instance it seems like the director wants us to believe that charter schools are the answer…yet by his own stats only 20% (and by other calculations 16%) of them perform better than public schools. also he villifies standard testing while repeatedly referring to scores and rankings as evidence that specific schools are good or bad.
and more to the point, assuming those parents weren’t putting on act for the camera, i’d bet that most of those kids grow up and go to college bcuz their parents have a firm foot in their ass and seem to have their priorities straight (especially ma dukes up in the south bronx).
i had to google/wiki michelle rhee, the doc really doesn’t give her enough credit for how gangsta she got with shit in DC. mad props to her.
I took the SAT. Don’t even know my score. Only really matters when getting into a 4 year.
Yo thurst, michelle rhee is actually a fraud who fabricated every achievement on her resume. The facts behind WFS are really shoddy and don’t add up. Charter schools have never been shown to be more successful than public schools. The whole movie is just markedly anti-teacher/anti-union.

Whoops sorry about that. As for Kanji, when I learned Japanese it was the lowest on the priority list, just learn your basic ones after both forms of Kana, it’s not too important because when you’re there almost everything in Kanji has the Hiragana above it.

heisig’s remember the kanji series is pretty good. though a lot of stuff will have furigana as Grog mentioned, since there’s so many homonym’s knowing the kanji meaning will greatly help.
kana can be done in a week or less (without any books or anything) to get you started on studying/reading more. then if you keep at it regularly, at least near the beginning, they will eventually be ingrained.
my japanese coach for DS is good. has some flaws but overall is a great tool.
I have quite a few japanese books, but I’m too lax about studing lately lol. but I do do a lot of online reading. timwerx.com is a great resource. actually I have a lot online resources. kanji clinic is good too if you get to that point. and Anki will help greatly.
