I kind of like the Buu saga. I mean, the manga never really took itself seriously, but towards the end they took goofing off to a whole new level. There were a bunch of panels that were laugh out loud funny. Like when Trunks and Goten kept fucking up the fusion dance and broke the fourth wall.
The end of the Cell saga was the logical ending point of the series though. From the arrival of the Sayans, Toriyama had been building up Gohan as the central character, and when he levels up to defeat Cell is the big payoff. That’s where he was intending on ending things, but well, he likes money I guess.

Buu Saga had Vegeta throwing a blast and taking out a whole section of a stadium and everyone in the area without any care just to spite Goku. That was all I needed.
yeah…freeza and goku going super saiyan was the “originally” supposed to be the end of dragonball…that said, cell saga was awesome and the 20 or so episodes of the buu saga that actually contained shit happening were fantastic as well.
