yeah i know it’s not power metal. it’s progressive metal (slang term “Djent” [or “Thall” for that specific band]). i posted that band as an example of an extreme opposite to a power metal band.
and i understand it may be hard to listen to if you weren’t expecting it. it is the evolution of this:

the point is they are taking a chance and trying to create something interesting/different to listen to.
i’ve been playing guitar since 13 and listening to that style of music since 16. there is a specific pattern to it, but it’s not based on the guitar. it’s based on the drummer’s cymbal. the drummer will usually play a 4/4 (or equivalent) beat on the cymbal. everything else besides that one thing is fair game to warp and twist around. don’t follow the guitars, they are usually connected to the drummer’s bass pedal(s) and do whatever they want until a specific point where all instruments land on the same beat.

I will say that since you posted that, it reminded me that I love The Chariot. I saw them with JFAC a few years ago and I haven’t listened to them in a long time. <3
