Passions and One Life To Live have been cancelled. Passions was cancelled a few years ago. OLTL, just last year (although a few of the more popular actors/actresses have defected to GH). Only 4 daytime soap operas exist right now.

I only watch/record GH now as I have been a fan off and on for at least 20 years. I don’t watch the other 3 but the good thing about daytime soap operas are that they’re easy to pick back up even after a few years because many of the storylines/triangles stay the same so I could probably pick them back up if I chose to. I used to have to record them for my mom during the summer when I was a kid because she would work and not get home on time to see them and I liked recording shows on the VCR (recording tv shows was like playing a game back in those days). I know most of the characters on all the old soaps except for Passions as it never drew me in (not enough hotties and the plot was too supernatural-based). B&B and GH have always been my faves but I’ve dropped B&B because there aren’t enough hotties and the show is still only a half hour show after all these years.
People bag on soaps (men, mostly) but I’m so “whatever” about it. Y&R, GH, and AMC have gotten me in the door to getting laid 7x (different women each time). Can they say the same about watching and talking about Justice League, Batman TAS, and Mash?

Hmmm…wonder how horrible the original Syfy movie tonight will be, especially since it has that chick with the terrible faux British accent. Probably pretty terrible. Then again, the Jersey Shore Shark Attack movie of last weekend was a lot more decent than it had any right being, though that was doubtless because it didn’t take itself seriously (or rely so heavily on egregious CGI).
Oh, sorry. Right after I posted that, I kinda turned off my computer for a bit. So I didn’t see this until now. I’ll probably be on later tonight, but I’ll be gone for at least half of tomorrow, so…
Cartoons aren’t automatically inferior to live action shows, so I’m not sure what you’re trying to get at, especially since I don’t read comic books themselves anymore. I wish people would stop thinking that, but that’s neither here nor there, especially you’re taking this more seriously than I thought you would given how I went out of my way to ask it in a jocular rather than just ragging on you for watching soaps. So no need to get defensive. If I was being judgmental, then I would have been far more forward about it.
Also, Young Justice is actually rather internally consistent compared to the usual soap if we’re going to go there. A lot more from what I’ve heard.
Okay, good to know. I vaguely remember that Passions got cancelled at least, partly because it stood out from other soaps by being extra ridiculous from what I’ve heard between all the rapes and Satan and what not.
I see. Interesting. It’s not like I’ve never watched soap operas. I’ve used to watch them sometimes too due to my mother, except that unlike you I stopped, probably because I never liked them in first place–always found them dreadfully boring. “Eyecandy” has never done it for me, so it’s never really been a determinant of whether I’ve dropped or kept up with a show. That combined with me thinking that live action TV is often overrated just because it’s not animated and…yeah.
I was way too busy watching Gargoyles and Batman: The Animated Series to ever really care about soap operas I guess.
I’m sure people have gotten laid talking about M.A.S.H. given its popularity, but, again, that’s neither here nor there. The other shows wouldn’t really surprise me either.
(Also, considering you’re talking to the celibate guy who doesn’t really care about getting “laid”, that argument doesn’t work on me. Duly noted though.)
I “bag” on soaps more because of how overwrought with faux drama and convoluted, inconsistent plots they are rather than because they are “girly”, which is why I imagine most people (read: men) rag on them. Good storytelling is extremely important to me, which is why I gave up on wrestling forever ago, why I bitch about Bleach so much whenever I deign to talk about it and why I make those overly length analyses about shows like Avatar or Young Justice, even if they’re “lowly” cartoons to way too many people.
I actually don’t like Seinfeld, ironically.
That said, I could again easily see it getting someone laid because of how popular it is, though.
Regardless, I was merely curious about what soap opera you were watching (and why) given with the frequency you mention them being the most of the like three people (you, Geese Pants and IIRC Million) tend to mention them in the lounge. No offensive meant since I couldn’t care less what people watch; it was just curiosity since I don’t recall ever directly asking.
