TDK is pretty much an in-depth moral examination of the events of Batman #1. Essentially, TDK tears out the guts of The Long Halloween, and sticks in Batman #1, leaving a few parts of TLH behind… so to speak. Even though it’s 70 years ago, that Joker is very similar to the movie. Of course it’s only 20-ish pages but it’s worth reading.

The Dark Knight Returns is my favorite Batman story, though it’s more of the po-mo/deconstructionist/“big, important statement” variety. Definitely not your traditional Batman, though every half-wit hack writer who came after certainly seemed to think it should be.
I think it’s fascinating that somebody took the underlying assumptions within Batman’s moral code and ran with them.

Yes, I think you do. If after reading Dark Knight Returns, your reaction isn’t along the lines of “this is easily one of the top five greatest achievements in comic book history” then you need to re-read it and repeat.
I like it because it imagines the logical progression of all the ideas about Batman, extrapolated like twenty years into the future when he is old and even more obsessed with being Batman. It adds so much to the existing continunity of Batman because it brings attention to all the things that he is now, by imaging and projecting how those things will shape him in the future.
The problem is when everyone just ran with super old crazy gritty Batman as if that was the norm for modern day Batman…which is kind of the opposite point of DKR.
dark knight strikes back is a piece of shit though…aside from the part where the flash and supes are enslaved by humanity.
i think tim sale’s long halloween and dark victory are better stories than DKR…haven’t read any of them in awhile though, so might have to brush up.
I thought the Dark Knight strikes back wasnt too bad. No where near as good as DKR though.
