This is what I don’t get. It’s not like not being a sport makes it less legitimate, less competitive, or less skillful. It’s just not a sport. By the way, this goes both ways, including the people who try to declare any game they don’t personally like “not a sport.” At the end of the day, it makes zero difference.

no, i don’t consider poker a sport at all. or chess, or pool, or darts, or a lot of other stuff that made it into the olympics. i don’t consider playing video games a sport either. hence why i throw the “e” in front of it. people have different definitions, and lots of activities fall into gray areas, but mine is basically a sport is something requires athletic ability AND where a clear winner is defined (not determined by arbitrary judging). so even though gymnastics requires tons of athletic ability, not a sport in my eyes.
so according to my definition, I would even put NASCAR as a borderline sport, since there is a clear winner and racers actually have to be in surprisingly good shape to withstand the g-forces.
As far as I know, Cali doesn’t have Steak ‘N’ Shake, so we’re good.

I have a friend that is a figure skater and we give her a hard time about figure skating not being a sport, due to the whole judging thing. I tend to use fishjie’s definition for what is and isn’t a sport.
F1 is definitely a sport, so I begrudgingly have to acknowledge NASCAR as a sport as well.
the only people who wont acknowledge nascar as a sport are people who like to join the bandwagon ‘lol fuck rednecks’ thing. nascar is dumb and i hate it, but its as much a sport as any racing competition

It does take a fair amount of mental fortitude and endurance to race in a car that is prolly hovering aroun 100+ degrees for 3-5 hours especially when you consider they aren’t just taking a sunday drive…

Damn. This thread exploded. Gonna have to catch up later on today after I do some work–since I’m actually being productive this week still–and get used to the new switch over in general; everything looks like it’s an actual improvement, especially the speed at which the front page loads now,…which only serves to make wonder when something will inevitably fuck up.
