I’ve been wanting to learn how to play guitar for a while. I have a guitar that I messed around with for a couple months, but now I seriously want to get into it.
Are the free online tutorials fine? Or should I be looking into guitar lessons? I’m worried about learning things the wrong way, improper form, etc.
For acoustic guitars, should the size depend on your height or something, or is the size fine as long as you feel comfortable with it? Are there any suggestions like “the fret board should be the length of your arm” or something?
To add to what Capn Spanky said, I suggest going to your local music shop and trying out various acoustics.
Don’t feel intimidated if you don’t know how to play. Just sit down with a couple of different ones, strum them randomly and get a feel for what body style, neck length/width, etc. you click with best.
My practice amp broke recently. It was a Fender Frontman 15R and I LOVED it. I received two 15Rs from an old guitar teacher and I already owned one. The two I received were an older model with black grilles. They sounded terrible and I did not like to play them at all. The other 15R that I had was built in Fender’s revision of the frontman line and it had a silver grille. Man did that amp sound awesome. It had the best tone I’ve ever heard from a 15 watt amp. When it broke I was expecting an identical replacement as my Fender warranty was still good. As I’ve come to discover, that’s not the case.
I got my new amp today and it sounds just as bad as my cruddy black grille frontman amps. I’m trying to break in the speaker to see if that cleans it up, but man will I be pissed if my awesome 15R is gone for good and all I have is a cheap imitation.
So, I still haven’t jumped on the RG770DX yet. I just got the opportunity to get either a PGM 301 with a silver set up from Ibanez rules, or a 2005 JEM7V in near mint condition. Shippingincluded, the PGM is about $400 cheaper. Both guitars are pristine.
edit: I was at my local music store today and I got talking to the owner and he asked to play my Strat. Now he’s going to be setting up, servicing it, and modding it for me. If the mod turns out like it’s supposed to, I may end up just saving my money and not buying a new guitar. One thing I didn’t like about my strat was that it felt really tough to play. Turns out there is a bridge mod I can do that will make it more playable.
On top of that, he’s giving me what the store calls a “Mojo Mod.” It makes my second tone knob roll off some of the treble from the classic strat sound so my guitar can sound more like a PRS when clean. All in all, I’m really stoked and I’m hoping this turns out well so I can save my $1,xxx dollars and use it on other gear.
What are some tips on choosing new acoustic steel guitar strings? What does gauge represent? What type of material should I go for? I just moved to another country and the stores are selling brands of strings that I’ve never heard of.
Unless it’s just some schmuck working the job to pull dat minimum wage, the people working at music stores are usually pretty knowledgeable about the products they’re selling. Be sure to tell them the type of sound you’re going for, and just be wary of them upselling the pricier stuff.
what are some good tips to start making your own song … i keep getting stuck in the same area of my guitar it sounds good but is there a place to learn how to move the chords around properly ?
So my thumb gets very very sore if I play bar chords a whole lot (I’ve been learning Drain You by NIrvana). Is this one of those things where I just need to get a totally ripped thumb and it’ll pass with time? Or do I just have poor form?
^ you’re probably pressing too hard on the joint of your thumb. Make sure the pad of your thumb, not joint, is creating a pinch with your index when you barre and position it so it’s lined up behind the barred finger.
I used to have the same problem and didn’t take long to correct. Just keep working at it. Eventually, it’ll feel really effortless to do.
Ok guys so as some of you might already know I’m a tattoo artist. A close friend of mine decided he wanted to get a chest tattoo but he’s currently low on funds.
Instead he offer to trade me the tattoo for a “B-52 LG-100A” Head. But im still a guitar noob and don’t really know if it’s any good or not.
in guitar builder news, my newest joystick design mimics the same processes i have to do to cut a guitar out on my CNC machine. it came out ok, so all i have to do now is make a design and get some wood i guess.
