No, I was right and the problem is solved. As for EVH, I don’t know that he does it now that he’s got his own brand, but he used to boil paraffin wax and dunk the pickups in it to isolate them from microphonic feedback. As with a lot of the DIY stuff he did back then, he was running some high risks of damaging his equipment.
So I’ve been e-mailing Rich from Ibanez Rules back and forth. I sent him a wishlist of 4 guitars: PGM300RE, JS1000, RG770DX, and RG 3550MZ. The 300 and the 770 are sold out, so that kinda sucks. The 1000 is still in stock and in a very lucrative looking Burnt Trans Blue finish, but I’m not sure I want another guitar with a neck similar to a Strat. I’m leaning towards the 3550 now, and I’m seeing if you guys have played either the 3550 or its cousin the 2550. I’ve read good things about the 2550, but there aren’t any reviews for the 3550. Rich says the black 3550 is going for $1,100 shipped. Of course I would get platinum service, and that would put me at around $1,500. Canto, I know you know Ibanez pretty well. Thoughts on this?
It’s been a while since anyone has posted in here, so I’m trying to get discussion going again.

I’ve narrowed it down for sure to these two. These finishes, stock pickups. The 3550MZ would e o set up by Rich, the 770DX would have to be set up by a local dealer as Rich is sold out of the 770. Anyone have ANY comments?
770DX FOR SURE! That guitar is so bad ass man! Just look at it!!! If you can rely on the local dealer and know he does good work then go for it.
The reason: 770DX has the original wizard neck that is had a wide fretboard and super thin back of neck. It’s amazing for shredding. This edition has a titanium truss rod which helps a lot with the stability of the neck. Another huge + is the original edge trem which not only has amazing tuning stability, but also has smooth and easy trem bar action. It’s my favorite Ibanez trem and many Ibanez players agree that it’s the best.
The 3550 has a revised wizard neck which many players say feels different. I didn’t use one long enough to notice any huge issues. One of the major things about t he 3550 is it has the newer edge zero trem. It’s made in China and a considerable amount of people have been complaining about them, while many people don’t have issues with them. Feels okay just a bit stiffer than an original edge. I owned a guitar with a ZR trem which is very similar and it was great for me. Both the ZR and edge zero are really easy to setup and maintain. On the back they have a roller nut that will adjust trem angle. Also they both come with a intonation screw built into the trem that you can screw out and use. It’s awesome and easy.
Either one would be good but I’d go for the 770dx.
Thanks Canto, that’s the kind of reasoning I was looking for. Everyone else I was asking was saying things like “That one is too blue.” Or “I like the black one better.”
I was originally thinking about the 3550 because I heard that the Tone Zone is higher output than the F2 and F4 in the 770, but I think I can make it work and if I don’t like it I can just mod it with all the money I’m saving.
I just wish Rich wasn’t sold out of these! But the 770 will cost me alot less than a platinum setup 3550, and I can put that money towards upgrading the guitar.
Now I just have to break the news to my girlfriend. She liked the black one better. haha

Loving the staggered double post.
I think I may trademark the technique, that way everyone in trading outlet will have to owe me royalties so I can pay for this guitar.
Guess I might as well post in here; bought a really cheap electric (harley benton les paul…) like 7 years ago with a Marshall MG15CDR and all I ever did was playing some tabs and spazzing out a bit, dug it out again 2 days ago and started learning some chords and just getting my hands to stretch more easily and what not…gonna stick with it this time, I won’t give up. BOOYA. Or something.
I wanted to ask, are semi-hollow guitars closer to electrics or to acoustics when it comes to neck-width (assuming it doesn’t vary wildly)?
It depends on the guitar really… there are some acoustics that have thiner necks and some acoustics that have huge necks. Name some specific brand and models.
Are there any good sites that list the gear used by bands on certain songs. Like what amp their using, which effects, pedals, the kind of guitar etc.?
Yeah, as Canto said, it’s 100% different from guitar to guitar. My grandfather is a semi-hollow aficionado and they’ve all got varying neck width.
Hmmm… You can prolly find that information if you comb thru either big guitar forums like the ultimate-guitar.com board or individual band sites (official or fan-made)
I.E. - Paul Gilbert’s gear = Racer X Forum
Guitar Geek also offers a pretty good database of guitarists’ gear setup, though that’s live gear, not recording gear.
Anywho, got a general question for you fellow guitar noodlers… What is your favorite guitar instructional DVD (if you have any)? It can be from stuff like John Petrucci’s Rock Discipline to Metal Method’sDVD set… What say you?
Right, okay, thanks.
Metal Method is a great way for absolute beginners to get a start.
Rock Discipline is cool for exercises and technical proficiency, but it does little to teach you how to actually play. I consider it more of a guitar workout than an instructional dvd. Best used at about intermediate level imo. Too many beginners lose themselves learning redundant exercises (how many times times do they think they’ll ever use 1,2,3,4 at 200bpm?).
My favorite is Marty Freedman’s Melodic Control. Not so much an instructional video, but more about advanced concepts of playing. To take advantage of this video though, you should already know your way around the fretboard, intervals, at least your major and minor scales and how to harmonize them. Unfortunately, both on youtube and google, the audio is not in synch, but it’s still good to watch regardless.
Having said that, there is not guitar instructional video out there that can match youtube. Every guitarist, regardless of skill level should subscribe to at least these 2 channels:
Best instructional channel imo. From beginner to very advanced lessons. He goes deep into topics that other youtube vids normally don’t.
Not as consistent or in-depth as above channel, but there’s a LOT of content and wide variety. Multiple instructors (some very fun to watch), each specializing in different topics.

So my cheapo amp blew a fuse right before a gig a couple weeks ago, and I ended up using the sound guy’s amp. Later on, I popped a fresh fuse into my amp and turned it on. Boom–blown again. The bad news is that it’s almost definitely not worth fixing. The mixed news is that I now have a new used Crate amp. It has a bunch of features I couldn’t give a shit about, but what’s important is that it can run an effects processor straight to the power amp and bypass all the other shit. Which is all I need.
The moral of the story: try to play venues where the sound guy brings his own little rig… just in case.
this thread is ridiculous. a bunch of highly experienced and some master luthiers (and a few noobs but mostly experienced people) are pimping their stuff like we pimp custom sticks. type in some of these guy’s names in a search engine and see who’s buying their stuff. it’s sick :wasted:
also John Catto “reverse engineered” a bunch of classic electrics like Les Pauls and Fenders and put them in a pdf. now i have completely accurate (fraction of a mm for some of these things) guitar plans i can redraw and put into my cnc machine. now to find the time to draw
