[SRK Guitarists and Bassists 2.0]

 i just reread my post. were you so shocked at my CNC machine ownership that you didn’t make fun of the WORST TYPO EVER?

i be using… that’s what i be doin

yeah i need to cut out a guitar first to see if everything works correctly. if it does, i’ll start taking orders  i use Google Sketchup, which i don’t put my faith in; can’t draw curved lines in Sketchup (which is ok for joysticks, but definitely not for guitars). if you have an idea on what you want done, might want to get kaz to draw it since he’s a Solidworks master.

Damn, kaz stays making me look like a scrub. I usually do my modeling in b-spline editors like s-patch/hamapatch/animation master. No problems with curved lines there.

Someone need my help?

SA, I built a full scale model of a bass guitar I designed back in college. It wasn’t functional (aesthetic purpose only) but the best thing to do to avoid wasting wood, obviously is to have a good 2D drawing of the profile. I used to tape the drawing directly to the material and then cut around the shape or very close to it with a couple millimeters of leeway. I’d knock that off by using a sander. Works like a charm.

me too, man. look at his shit.

kaz can eat a dick 4 real

my “poor man” CAM software accepts STL files the best (i haven’t figured how to get a dxf file to work without crashing. i don’t trust much else because it gives a preview that shows what the finished result will be. that kind of sucks, BUT it can do up to 4 sided machining (4 for a neck and 2 sided machining for a body. i don’t have a vertical travel high enough to accommodate cutting a guitar out while it’s standing on it’s side.) if you can output your design as an STL file, i’ll get some crap wood to test it out.

Man, I never even heard of STL files. But it looks like I can get it there via MeshLab.

Hey man! Don’t hate! LOL. Those are computer models, but the line drawings were done by hand. I can draw you know. Plus, the kitchen island I designed ISN’T a computer model. The line drawings again were done by hand, the conceptual model I build by hand. It’s a third scale model.

That is incredibly sick looking.

Every day I come home hoping my Vader cab will be there waiting for me, hurry up UPS!

So I need a new amp, on the cheap. I play metal stuff like Black Dahlia Murder and Dethklok, just need something for practicing with a drummer and possibly small shows at some point. Looking at the Peavy Vypyr 75watt combo amp, I can get a used one for around $230, is there any other decent amps for $300 or less that would still sound alright? Obviously I’m not expecting Dual Rectifier tones for that much, but if there are any sleeper amps out there for not too much I’d like to know.

Got a couple questions:

In…

 1. Is there any distortion for the high E picking that starts at 0:18? If so, what?

 2. What chord(s?) is used in the part starting at 0:45?

 1. It sounds like he’s running the amp mostly clean, with a little extra drive (or treble boost, or compression, or whatever). Frusciante typically doesn’t go for outright distortion. Just turn up the gain on your clean channel until it starts getting hot. You could also run your dirty channel and turn the volume knob on your guitar down to almost zero. Make small adjustments, play some of the notes, and make some more adjustments until it starts sounding right.

 2. Sounds like it’s some kind of Asus2 chord. I don’t have a guitar on hand, but going strictly by ear, I’m going to recommend barring your finger across the thin strings at the 12th fret and fretting at the 14th fret on the G string. Someone correct me if I’m hearing it wrong.

The Peavey valvekings have pretty good tone. I used a valveking head before I got my 6505, but it was like 600 new and I dunno how much the valveking combos go for.

Yeah I was also looking at the Valve King 112 combo amp, but I heard it’s not that great for Metal and contrary to most tube amps it doesn’t sound that great when turned up loud. Another thing I was looking at was the Peavy Supreme 160 head, I can get one for $150. It’s solid state, but it’s the same head At the Gates used on Slaughter of the Soul so I figure it’ll probably be good enough for me.

Here’s the deal. I’ve got a shitty guitar I bought for thirty bucks (terrible action, terrible looks, terrible instrument) and I’m thinking of completely overhauling it. I’m a member of TalkBass.com, and they have a cool little luthiers corner, but I figured I’d check here as well.

Basically, I’m planning on sanding it down, priming and painting it, gutting it, shielding the hell out of it, putting in new pickups, electronics, pegs, the works. Now this isn’t something I’m going to jump on tomorrow morning, but I’m gearing up for it nonetheless. I’m not going to throw too much money into this thing, as it is my first project (if all goes well), but has anyone here done something like this before? Any favorite sites of yours for this kind of thing, tips, etc. will be appreciated.

They’re fine for metal, the tone isn’t very far below the 6505 to be honest. Never played the combos, but I played the head through a Marshall cab and it sounded great, but obviously you’ll want to play any amp before you buy it.

BTW solid state amps don’t sound very good turned up either, but seeing as you’re getting the amp mainly for practice and small gigs, you won’t really have to crank it anyway (lots of places will mic you, in which case you’ll be playing on 3 or so).

ok, i found my electric guitar making book. y’all are screwed now  still worried about making necks though. i just might buy Warmoth the first few times.

Argghh… hum is the bane of my existence. Once I solve one hum problem I just run into another. New amp: hum. New pickups: hum. New AB Splitter: Hum. I have everything plugged into a Furman Rackmount power supply plus I have a noise suppressor + noise gate on my amp. Used multiple guitars, cords, amps even. Just frustrating is all.

In other news, gonna have a huge NGD (New Gear Day) next week. Got my Vader cab last night but waiting for the rest of my shit to come in before pics. Then again, maybe it’s just me that likes looking at pics of people’s gear.

I had a big hum problem when I got a new bridge pickup for my Agile. Less of a hum and more of an ear-splitting shriek, actually. It only happened at high volume on full distortion with the volume pot on 10. It was uncontrollable.

Turned out, the pickup was set too high. I lowered it enough to stop the shrieking, and I may lower it again.

Link to the “Make Your Own Guitar” book, plz?

i bought it a few years ago. still relevant i guess.

i lurk here as well. watch out though, don’t do what some of those guys do on that site. some of them will jump in with no preparation, mess up, then never post again. conversely, some guys will get it right on the first try. try to look at threads where the poster is on their 3rd or 4th guitar. they usually know what they’re doing.

If that doesn’t work, I hear some guitarists (I want to say EVH) had their techs use aluminum foil wrapped around the pickup as shielding. I’ve never done it, but you might want to look into that as well.
