Ha, I feel you. I’m teaching my brother how to play, and we can relate everything back to street fighter.
4/4 meter is the most common. Think of it as having super. Blah blah blah Street Fighter blah blah scales blah…

I relate nearly everything to fighting games:rofl:
Basics- The most important thing (imo) in both guitar and street fighters are your fundamentals (basics). Any player with a good understanding of the basics with always beat some idiot who can do the flashiest shit, but hasn’t developed his basics. In guitar, this is rhythm. Technicality, shredding, fancy licks/chords and shit… none of that matter if you can’t play in time.
Experience- A player who goes to tournaments and plays against experienced players from all over who are good at different styles using even the same characters, will always learn MUCH faster than someone who just plays against his best friend all the time. Then you have the players that only play against the computer, like the guys who only play guitar in their bedroom. Meet and jam with other musicians, go to local pubs/bars even if just to watch other people play in open mic nights, etc. You will learn at an exponentially faster rate than you would just playing by yourself mimicking youtube heros.
Technique- When I first competed in tekken, I was the technical type who could (and would) pull off the flashiest shit, even in tournies and wow the crowd, BUT… I’d get beat by players with better basics. Having said that, technique is still very, very important. What good is learning some amazing licks and runs (or combos) if you can’t pull them off at will? Practice till you can play everything cleanly without struggling. Start off very slow and build up to speed, do not do the guitar equivalent of button mashing as it will be a habit very hard to get rid of and only hinders your progress. Metronome is a must.
I’ll continue later… dinner time!
4/4 time is footsies.
Yeah, this is what I’m talking about. I can bust out stuff like Bohemian Rhapsody easily, but rock and roll rhythm/ acoustic strumming give me difficulty because I never really dug into that stuff.
I also have the same problem that I have with Street Fighter; nobody around here plays seriously. I go to college now up in the capital, so plenty of experience there. But after nearly 5 years learning and not playing in bands, I struggle to gel.
I love that username!
LOL. If it matter much, I’m a jazz/gospel player myself. What do you play on the regular?
Playing with others is definitely a huge EXP bonus. My playing has skyrocketed since I’ve started seriously playing with a band a couple nights a week. I’ve probably learned more about guitar these past few months than the 5 years of dicking-around I did beforehand.
Just like in Street Fighter, you can’t go into a jam, bust off some random shit, and expect it to work. You need to have a strategy. A game plan. A bag of tricks. You need to read what the other guys are going to do and respond accordingly.
Listen to the old school SF2 soundtrack. If you learn nothing else, you’ll learn a nice batch of textbook examples about constructing a good melody.
I’m really a rock player, but I love a lot of jazz. Wes Montgomery and Coltrane hit the spot for me.
The username comes from a couple years back when I was jamming with a friend. I’d be noodling around with distortion on, and he’d turn it off and declare it to now be"SMOOTH JAZZ". So when it came to think up an Xbox Live Gamertag, I took that and stuck 101 on the end.
Those are some of the older cats. It’s good to get into that stuff. Listen to any of the newer jazz guitarists these days? Like Lee Ritenour, Al Di Meola, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Frank Gambale, Brett Garsed or TJ Helmerich? Some of my fav guitarists…
edit: nvm
I love John McLaughlin and Allan Holdsworth’s stuff. Holdsworth’s stuff is really hard to get into, but there’s incredible beauty there.
Thanks for the name dropping. Gonna check them out when I get off.
I’ve been listening to Lawson Rollins lately. Paco De Lucia used to be my favorite Spanish Guitarist… but I think I’ve found the new king of latin guitar.
Can you guys recommend a good compressor pedal? I just bought an ISP Decimator to replace my Boss noise suppressor pedal and I was wondering if the Boss compressor is any good.
Anyone here ever heard of Ibanezrules.com? I’m trying to see if the owner is legitimate. They have a VERY nice guitar in stock, and if this guy is as awesome as his site makes him seem, I want to buy it.
Rich (the owner of the site) is HIGHLY praised among jemsite forumers. He regularly posts on the jemsite forums under “Rich.” He has never had one complaint in the 10 years hes been doing his services. I’ve never played a guitar from him cause I don’t got the $$$ but everyone who ever has has always said it’s one of the best guitars they’ve ever played.
Right on his website you can see every thing he does tot he guitar when you buy a setup guitar from him. And I have relied on his guides on setting up time and time again. They’re the best source for setting up Ibanez guitars.
Go for it dude and get the gold setup or platinum setup. And then let us know how it plays. :bgrin: You can email him too, he replies to emails quickly and answers directly. I’ve emailed him a bunch of times about ordering parts from him.
Which guitar are you looking at?

My budget was set at $1500, but after seeing this guitar, I think I’ll make an exception. Thanks for the advice. I just don’t want to get scammed on such a big purchase. Glad to hear he’s reputable.
Oh dude that is one SEXY guitar. Really classy lookin’. Watch our for new models this winter NAMM, maybe you’ll see something you like.
the bug has bit me again. i’m making a guitar. i don’t see how dudes just jump into it and get it perfect on the first try. is it really that easy? i’m so scared of screwing up and wasting 100s of dollars worth of wood and i be using my CNC machine! i wanted to reproduce an exotic wood ESP Forest, but i just read that it’s actually illegal to copy ESP’s design even for personal use. so it looks like i gotta draw my own  i suck at drawing curved stuff
also biggest guitar innovation ever? only time will told.
…you have a CNC machine?
I might, um, have to make you an offer sometime in the not too distant future…
