[SRK Guitarists and Bassists 2.0]

Funny you mention weird tuning…I was tuned to CGDGAD and EBC#G#BD# last night…yours is weirder. D’s everywhere!

Especially with the tuner I have. It’s not bad for the electric because I can plug my guitar into the tuner, but it occasionally acts finicky with my acoustic.

You would think you’d get used to what D sounds like after, like, three strings.

Have you guys watched Speed Kills?? Does it help?

The most recent alternate tuning I used was Devin Townsend’s CGCGCE. Kind of weird, but interesting once you get it figured out. It blew my mind when all those Van Halen chord shapes started showing up in the top three strings instead of the almost-top three.

But the weirdest alternate tuning I’ve ever used was Robert Fripp’s New Standard, which is CGDAEG. Violinists and mandolinists would be right at home, but it’s utterly counterintuitive for guitarists, who are used to dealing with fourth intervals instead of fifths. You can get some cool stuff out of it, but the main thing it did was make me appreciate how natural a normally-tuned guitar feels.

I have a guitar pro tab of the minibosses’ version of this song. It’s about 75% of your speed. Such a great tune though

Currently playing/learning:
Alone in the Dark - Testament
Crossing the Rubicon - The Human Abstract

Currently shopping for:
A seven string guitar
A Classical Guitar
or
A Paul Gilbert signature Ibanez.

Any help/recommendation would be awesome.

Oh my god, I linked to the wrong thing…hahahahahaha. That post made zero sense in that context.

I bought a PGM301 years ago, it is an amazing workhorse axe. A lot of the older PGM’s can run up some serious loot though.

If I had the money just lying around, I’d probably spring for PG’s new Fireman.

  1. I’ve decided that if/when I get a new guitar, it’ll be a super-strat. Floyd Rose, bridge humbucker, you know.

  2. It will essentially do the same stuff as one of my current guitars, except better, so I’ll probably be getting rid of that one. The SD Hot Rails in the bridge and the Schaller tuners might boost its value a little.

  3. While I’m at it, I’ll probably try to get rid of my first guitar (Squier Infinity, baybee!) as well. It’s currently missing strings, springs, and several other parts that I’ve cannibalized from it.

In the world of awesome, my superstrat is still unplayed because I can’t get the strings off it.

Does anybody have any advice for getting one’s pinky under control? Everytime I lift my ring finger from the fretboard, my pinky goes flying off like an inch and a half.

Long, boring fingering exercises. The kind where you play slow to a metronome and speed up by five BPM once you’ve got it down.

…Awesome. :bluu:

When I was working on Pinky control/speed/dexterity, I would do trills with my pinky (hammering on and off as fast as possible) until my pinky got really tired.

edit: I think the Paul Gilbert Fireman axes are cool, but I think the PGM 301 and 401 are really awesome, and I prefer the superstrat body along with the humbuckers.

Pretty much.

SO I went through a period of rapid guitar buying and selling, but I’ve finally settled on my NiteFly M and an ESP M-7. At least for now…

What tuning should a bass generally be if the guitar player has his setup in drop d? Moreso, what would compliment the guitar?

I honestly don’t get why people feel the need to alt. tune a completely different instrument to match another one…but it wouldn’t hurt to put the bass in drop d also. Or, you know, just play higher notes…or a 5 string…or whatever.

Well the reason I’m asking is cus I play in standard, and I dont really know if i should play in drop d as well. I mostly play guitar and I dabble in bass here n there, and this is the first time im playing with someone who has their guitar in drop d, which is why i’m asking.

Whats the best guitar forums online?
