[SRK Guitarists and Bassists 2.0]

http://www.jemsite.com/forums/

i mean, nobody can really answer that question but you. If playing in drop d gives you an advantage in your mind, then go ahead. If it doesn’t, then don’t.

Ever since Warp posted that Metroid tune, I’ve been playing it over and over on my guitar. I want a bass player to come play the bass part for me so I don’t have to use some Guitar Pro backing track.

As soon as I get a recording setup, I’m gonna want to do some collaborations. Anyone up for it?

I play a lot of vgm. And i am based in the bay area. Lets do it!
But i dont have a bass

I’m always down…and you know I have a bass. REPOST

I’m sitting here, contemplating posting up a new version of the song I meant to link instead of the metroid song now.

what’s all in your setup? i’m plan to build a home recording studio sometime in the future.

Right now, my recording hardware setup is as simple as can be…I have a behringer bass bdi 21, and a line 6 toneport ux8 audio interface. I have an m-audio fast track pro interface for use with the laptop…can’t use the line 6 software with it, though, so I use freeamp/simulanalog/ardaz/various other (free) amp sims and effects if I deem it necessary, or I just carry the UX8 with me. Softwarewise, I USE Reaper for recording. It’s also a great practice tool since you can slow down recordings without pitch changing. I also have a little Crate Profiler portable amp that sounds…eh, but gets the job done if I want to rock out away from the crib for whatever reason. It also doubles as an audio interface, but I haven’t used it like that yet.

My monitors are Roland Cube CM-30s. They’re good choices for the performing/recording musician, since you could actually use one or both of them as a 30 watt amp, or use both as a mini-PA. They even have 3 input channels in them.

thanks for the info… time to start saving.

Try playing the tunes in standard, then try playing them in drop D. If it’s easier in one than in the other, go with that one. If there’s no difference, go with whichever one sounds better. If there’s no difference, then it doesn’t matter.

Dusted off Van Halen’s first album. This thing is so full of great licks, and they all go by so fast that you might miss them. I’m currently working on the first 30 seconds or so of “I’m the One,” a song that seems to exist purely for the guitar’s sake.

I need to actually listen to Van Halen at some point.

I recently dusted off …and Justice For All and remembered why it’s one of my alltime favorite albums of any genre.

I think Van Halen is really over rated. Some of his stuff is pretty catchy, but otherwise most of his songs sound like he’s just dicking around. In my opinion, Paul Gilbert is a superior guitarist. There’s a few really good Van Halen songs though. Jason Becker and Marty Friedman both have better chops IMO.

…And Justice for All is a sweet album. I’d say my favorite Metallica album. One of the last albums heavily influenced by Cliff Burton. Except for parts of the Black Album, things start to go downhill musically.

There’s what I originally meant to link. Enjoy listening to me suck.

I think you posted this in the lounge once already. I know I’ve listened to this. Maybe I’ll lay down some (butchered) Guilty Gear tracks for you guys to criticize. I just need to make some sort of recording set-up.

I did. I can actually play it better now…welll, maybe not now. I play it waaay better on my 5 string than on any of the 4s, for some reason…plus I’m not as rusty. Of course, that’ll all evaporate as soon as I get ready to record. And my 5er has no strings on it currently.

There are countless guitarists who beat Van Halen in terms of pure technical skill, but that’s probably the most irrelevant quality in any musician. If you’re competent, you’re competent.

Don’t get me wrong–I love Steve Vai and Paul Gilbert, but Ed is and has always been my favorite guitarist. His playing is creative, has tons of energy, and is utterly unique. If Ed sounds like any other guitarist out there, it’s because he’s being copied. As for sounding like he’s dicking around, there’s structure and form to pretty much everything he’s ever done. There are times when he’s most definitely taking some chances, but that’s always preferable to the alternative. Nobody ever made history by always coming in on the first downbeat of the measure and sticking strictly to scalar runs and evenly subdivided rhythms.

And if it came down to who has the best chops, everybody would remember Rusty Cooley and Michael Angelo instead of Jimmy Page and David Gilmour.

I’m not going to disagree with what you say about VH. He does have the energy, the creativity, and the uniqueness.

I remember reading an interview with Randy Rhoads when he talks about “competing” with Van Halen in the club scene. RR says when he heard Van Halen dive bomb without losing his tuning he nearly crapped himself. I do think alot of modern shred is heavily influenced by VH and I thank him for that, I just don’t think his music is for me at all. I do LOVE Randy Rhoads though.

Rusty Cooley is the man, whilst I think M.A.B. is too full of himself. I’m not a huge fan of Rusty Cooley’s “Outworld” stuff except for “Riders.” Chris Broderick is another high ranker on my list of favorite guitarists.

I think Jimmy Page and David Gilmour are ok. Personally, I only prefer Page when he’s playing with Plant. Pink Floyd on the other hand just doesn’t really interest me. Some of Gilmour’s solo stuff is pretty cool, but otherwise there are few Floyd songs that I actually like enough to listen to by choice.

gilmours freaky monkey fingers freak me the fuck out

i really need to spend some serious time doing boring ass exercises to build finger speed/pinky independence.

So who here uses amp sims? I know Dimitar (fucking awesome name for a guitarist, btw) uses them almost exclusively and gets a hell of a lot out of them–even freeware ones. On that note, it’s crazy the number of options for packages are out there. Waves GTR, Revalver, Gearbox/Pod Farm, Softube, Amplitude, Guitar Rig, Th1…I’m still working out the details of Pod Farm, myself, and contemplating some of the expansions.
